BlackBerry 9780

Until now, the phone getting most of the OS 6 attention is the BlackBerry 9800.  However, it looks like the BlackBerry 9780, also unannounced at this time, will run OS 6 as well.  In the video below, the BlackBerry 9780 by RIM is running OS 6, but since the phone is a pre-release device, it is not running the final software version of OS 6.  It’s worth noting this is the first QWERTY BlackBerry device we have seen OS 6 operate on.  The 9780 has similar and hardware to that of the 9700, probably will operate on GSM network, and features the same battery as the Bold 9700.  Since it runs OS 6, the device comes with 512MB of RAM.  Hopefully we’ll hear more information about the BlackBerry 9780 at the RIM event, and who knows, maybe it will launch with the BlackBerry 9800 or shortly thereafter.

Over a million Android users affected by malicious app

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones

Android Logo

It looks like the first major app attack has hit Android pretty hard.  Over one million users reportedly downloaded the malicious app which is designed to steal personal information and report it back to some unknown Chinese website.  The malicious app is Jackeey Wallpaper, an app that provides users with wallpaper themes such as My Little Pony and Star Wars.  As you can probably tell, the app would have been really popular with young teenagers who have Android phones.  It looks like the app only collects phone number, subscriber identifier, and voicemail information.  The only official statistic regarding the number of downloads of this app is 1.1 million - 4.6 million.  Perhaps we’ll see official word from Google about this malicious app attack because I’m sure it caught everyone who downloaded the app by surprise.

myTouch 3G HD backside image surfaces

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

myTouch 3G HD rear image Earlier today, we reported the leaked image of the myTouch 3G HD smartphone device rumored to launch on T-Mobile as its first HSPA+ phone.  At the time, details were relatively scant and the only image leaked was of its frontside, but today, the same tipster revealed to TmoNews the backside of the myTouch 3G HD.  Unfortunately, the details are once again relatively scant, but at least we now have two pictures of the myTouch 3G HD.  The backside image shows a camera of a unknown megapixels, and that’s pretty much it.  Whether the 3G HD turns out to be the first HSPA+ smartphone, only time will tell.

Tweet reveals 2.2 (Froyo) coming to HTC Desire?

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Email / IM, Smartphones, Mobile

According to a translated tweet from HTC Benelux regional director (who probably should know better), The HTC Desire should be getting an upgrade to Android 2.2 this week. The tweet was followed up by comments that not everyone would get it shortly due to bandwidth limitations but HTC. Earlier, HTC committed to an upgrade in Q3 and an earlier leak put the upgrade before the holidays.

“We beginnen vanaf morgen met de upgrades naar Android 2.2 voor Desire, later meer devices”.  Dropping this statement into Google Translate says: “We start tomorrow with the upgrades to 2.2 for Android Desire later devices”.- Mark Moons via Twitter

Possibly confirming the above statement, Unwired View is reporting the HTC Desire is shipping in China with Froyo installed - no upgrade necessary.  The Desire is amoung the first HTC branded devices to enter the Chinese market.  Previously, the company rebranded their devices under the Dopod name.

YouTube will allow users to upload 15 minute videos starting soon

Section: Web, Websites, Online Music/Video, Google

YouTube Logo

For those who upload videos to YouTube often, the ten minute barrier might annoy you because you have to upload multiple videos.  According to Boing Boing, YouTube will be changing the upload limit from 10 minutes to 15 minutes, but YouTube did not release a timeframe.  While five additional minutes may not seem like a whole lot, it will certainly make a difference for users who’s video is slightly over 10 minutes and would otherwise have to make two videos.

In addition, YouTube plans to hold a “15 minutes of fame” contest in order to publicize the increased upload limit.  No word on when the contest is set to begin, but probably after YouTube officially increases the limit from 10 to 15 minutes.

Motorola Droid 2 user guide leaks online

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Web, Websites

Motorola Droid 2 User Guide

The Motorola Droid 2 is all but official at this point.  We have seen numerous rumors indicating an August launch, and today, the entire user guide for the Droid successor has been leaked online.  The 70 page report doesn’t reveal any earth shattering features, but does confirm Android 2.2 and a MotoBlur Skin similar to the Droid X.

In case you like the MotoBlur skin featured on the Droid X, then you’ll be happy to know the Droid 2 runs the same MotoBlur skin.  In addition, the Droid 2 comes pre-loaded with the Blockbuster app and Swype.  Obviously, the most notable feature on the Droid 2 is its physical QWERTY keyboard, but combined with Swype, you have the option for speedy virtual messaging.  Based on the Google search menu, the Droid 2 will run Android 2.2 (Froyo) out of the box.

All that we need to know now is official pricing and availability.  Feel free to download the user guide in its entirety below.

Rogers launches chatr wireless for budget minded consumers

Rogers launches chatr wireless for budget minded consumers

Rogers has officially launched their budget-minded chatr wireless service. The offer seems simple enough, pick a phone and pick a plan. And the best (or worst) part, there are limited options available.

In the case of the calling plans—two. Those interested in chatr can choose between the $35 or $45 per month plan. As for what you get—in both cases unlimited incoming talk, unlimited incoming text and call display, call waiting, call forwarding and group calling. Otherwise, the $35 per month plan has unlimited outgoing talk to anywhere in your province, 50 outgoing text messages and a $0.25 per minute charge for voicemail retrieval. And as you would expect, the $45 per month plan better covers those basics. In this case the outgoing talk is expanded to anywhere in Canada, the outgoing text messages are unlimited and the voicemail retrieval is also included.

As for the phones, there are four available—the Nokia 1661 for $60, the LG GB125R for $75, the Nokia 2680 for $95 and the Samsung Gravity for $130. And all come with no contract.

Video scams hitting Facebook hard

Section: Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking

A new scam is hitting Facebook hard. At first glance it looks like a friend posted a video to their wall, and the description is rather eye catching:

"I am shocked!!! I'm NEVER texting AGAIN since I found this out. http://bit.ly/zzzzz – Worldwide scandal!"  (URL edited for safety)

However, once the link to the video is clicked, you’re taken not to the shocking video but to a rogue Facebook app that asks you to fill out several surveys before it will let you see the video. The surveys are phishing attempts and anyone who fills them out has their personal info compromised and the same link they clicked on posted to their wall in an attempt to lure more people into the phishing web. A similar scam offers a shocking video of a teacher beating a student.

If you see links like this in your newsfeed, don’t click on them. Notify your friend they’ve been caught in a phishing scam. If you fell for it, go to your profile, click Account, then Application Settings and remove the offending apps. You should also immediately change all your passwords, and if you gave out any sensitive info such as bank account or credit card numbers, notify your financial institution right away!

Logitech preparing for Revue launch, posts "Lonely TV" video teaser

Section: Video, Gadgets / Other, Web, Google

It looks like Logitech is gearing up for the launch of the Logitech Revue, which for those that may not be as familiar with the name—is a Google TV companion set-top box. The commercial that was posted comes in at 29 seconds and judging from the “part 1” listing its clearly not the last we are going to see. Interestingly enough, it would appear as if the TV is killing itself by jumping in the pool because we all know that a television cannot swim. But maybe that is thinking a bit much and the television is simply trying to find things to do because it was bored. Either way, the end of the commercial closes with the important parts of the message; Fall 2010 and Revueiscoming.com.

Unconfirmed: Steve Ballmer wil give each Microsoft intern a free Windows Phone 7 phone

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile

Back on July 22nd we mentioned that every Microsoft employee was going to be getting a free Windows Phone 7 phone. What about those who are there on a regular basis but not necessarily an employee, and in some cases the ones who work even harder—the interns. Well, according to Gizmodo;

According to an intern tipster, when Ballmer was asked, at an “Intern Talk” earlier today, if Microsoft interns would also be receiving free Windows Phone 7 phones, he replied, “Recruiting doesn’t have the budget, but I do. So, Yes!...”

RIM acquires blackpad.com, prepping an iPad killer?

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

BlackPad.com domain registration

The iPad is extremely popular today mainly because there aren’t many strong competitors.  Many companies plan on creating an Android tablet, but most of them will not be ready for prime time until 2011.  However, for those who like BlackBerry’s, it looks like RIM might be preparing its own iPad killer with a device known as BlackPad.

Just a few days ago, RIM acquired the domain name blackpad.com, but hasn’t filled the site with anything.  Interestingly enough, the domain has been owned by someone since January 2002, meaning RIM probably had to negotiate a deal with someone for rights to the domain.  Of course, this is just a rumor that RIM is planning to launch its own tablet device in the form of the BlackPad, but RIM definitely acquired the domain recently.  Who knows, maybe we’ll see a prototype of the BlackPad at RIM’s event next Tuesday.

Sprint branded ZTE Peel 3G case for iPod touch spotted at FCC

Sprint branded ZTE Peel 3G case for iPod touch spotted at FCC

Carrying an iPod touch and wishing that it was 3G ready? Well, assuming the item in this FCC listing actually comes to market—your iPod touch will not only be able to access the Sprint 3G network, but it will also be able to serve up 3G by way of a mobile hotspot. The device—the ZTE Peel 3G, which is a 3G equipped case that is clearly wearing the Sprint brand. The case is said to serve as a mobile hotspot for other devices, use the iPod touch Wi-Fi to connect and also has a built-in battery so not to put any extra strain on your precious Apple device. And while this all looks very interesting we are still missing those important details—namely the price and release date. Of course, its likely to assume this will come along with a two-year agreement on Sprint. But then again, you will be able to make calls over the 3G connection from your iPod touch and then it will almost be like an iPhone.

100 million Facebook pages posted on torrent site

Section: Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking

100 million facebook pages on torrent site

A 2.8GB torrent containing the personal information of over 100 million Facebook users reared its ugly head onto a torrent site. Hacking extraordinaire Ron Bowes developed a web crawler program that accumulated data on all users on Facebook’s open access directory. These list is comprised of those Facebook users that have not changed their privacy settings to keep their pages unsearchable through search engines.

The hacker’s torrent contains more than 171 million entries which are related to over 100 million unknowing users. The contents of the file? User account names and a URL to their respective page which would reveal highly confidential information such as: a date of birth, home address and even phone numbers. Of course that information is already accessible to Facebook users anyways so what’s the big deal right?

The grey area comes into place as this list will allow you to search through to friends’ profiles even if they have secured their privacy settings deeming it an invasion of privacy. I feel like Bowes’ hard work would have been profitable on a marketing black market (if such a thing exists).

Moral of the story: lock up your profiles ladies and gentlemen.

Possible myTouch 3G HD image leaks, could be next HSPA+ smartphone

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

myTouch 3G HD

Yesterday, we reported T-Mobile unveiling a teaser page for its first HSPA+ capable smartphone.  Instead of the teaser page showing a brand new phone, it left a silhouette of the phone, leaving it up to the imaginary of T-Mobile’s followers to fill in the missing phone.  However the word Vanguard, a phone that has become synonymous with HTC Vision/G1 Blaze, was hidden deep inside the teaser page’s source code, giving rise to the possibility that the Vanguard is the first HSPA+ phone.

Today, Android Central received an image from a tipster who calls the phone pictured above the myTouch 3G HD.  As you can see, it has the familiar Genius button and myTouch branding.  The revelation of such an image is leading many to believe that the 3G HD might just be the first HSPA+ phone.  Again, this is simply rumor and speculation, the phone above could turn out to be nothing.  Hopefully T-Mobile fills in the missing phone picture on the teaser page so we can put these rumors to rest.

When it comes to DVD's, your local library is still besting Netflix & Redbox

Section: Business News, Video, DVD/DVR/Blu-ray, Video Providers

Your local library may not have the biggest selection of DVD’s to pick from, but it seems like they are providing a fairly popular method of borrowing movies. According to a survey that was done by OCLC Online Computer library Center—the public libraries are offering more DVD’s each day as compared to Netflix. The data is showing that libraries across the US are loaning out up to 2.1 million DVD’s per day. And that word—loaning—that may be the key here. They are free to borrow from the library, and while I would imagine that many libraries will vary—our county system here allows for DVD’s to be kept for one week at a time. Not bad for a free rental. Of course, if its not returned on time then you will get a $1 per day late fee. And that 2.1 million as compared to Netflix, they have 1.4 million rented daily. In the end, I am not sure if I should be surprised. The library seems like an outdated system for getting movies. But at the same time—free often wins. Not to mention I cannot say anything bad because my family (for the kids) typically borrows 3-4 movies per week.
