Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Software / Applications Are you eagerly awaiting the day HP launches a tablet device running webOS? Even though a tablet is on the horizon for HP, not much is known about the possible webOS running tablet, other than hopefully a 2010 launch. According to UPSTO, HP filed for a trademark on PALMPAD, which sounds an awful lot like a tablet device powered by Palm’s mobile OS. It is categorized under “Computers, computer hardware, computer software, computer peripherals, portable computers, handheld and mobile computers, PDAs, electronic notepads, mobile digital electronic devices” which makes it more likely the name PALMPAD will be used to describe a tablet device. Now we can keep our eyes and ears peeled for any rumors regarding a PALMPAD. The picture above confirms a few things: one it will launch as a Droid phone, two it features a slide-out portrait QWERTY keyboard, and three it will be a mid-range phone on the Verizon network. The familiar red-eye depicted on the phone is the brand commonly associated with Verizon Wireless’ Droid. For those familiar with Verizon smartphones, it has a similar appearance to the Palm Pre Plus in terms of a slide-out keyboard. Given the relatively small screen size, the unknown Motorola phone will most likely be an entry-level device on the Verizon network. Since Verizon already boasts the Droid, Droid X, Droid Incredible, and the upcoming Motorola Droid 2, a mid-range device should work well. Maybe this device is the Motorola WX445 we saw a little over a week ago? At the time, we weren’t sure when HTC would roll out this update to all other Droid Incredible owners, but according to latest reports, HTC began the roll out just a few days ago. For some reason, only a handful of users received the update, and even though roll outs generally take a long time, more users should have already received the update. BGR is reporting that HTC might pull the OTA update and add Google Android 2.2 to the list of features in the update. If the rumor pans out, users should stop receiving the update and receive the official update either late July or early August, which will include Froyo. HTC initially planned to issue two different OTA updates, one being the 3G Mobile Hotspot, 720p video recording, etc. and the other would only be Android 2.2. However, it does make more sense to roll out just one update with every new feature. Of course, we’re still waiting for official confirmation on this one, but it looks like Android 2.2 is right around the corner for HTC Droid Incredible owners! Apple’s mention of the BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC Droid Eris, Nokia, and the Samsung Omnia II surprised all four manufacturers and prompted them to response to Apple’s assertion. Shin Young-joon, a spokesperson for Samsung, had this to say on the matter: "The antenna is located at the bottom of the Omnia 2 phone, while iPhone's antenna is on the lower left side of the device. Our design keeps the distance between a hand and an antenna. We have fully conducted field tests before the rollout of smartphones. Reception problems have not happened so far, and there is no room for such problems to happen in the future." He also questioned the legitimacy of Jobs’ demonstration by questioning the circumstances and conditions under which the test was performed. Samsung didn’t release a complete statement like Nokia and RIM, probably because Samsung still manufacturers parts for the iPhone 4, and starting a war of words with Apple wouldn’t bode well for the giant manufacturer. Since all four manufacturers have pretty much stated they create superior antennas which hardly anyone complains about, is Steve Jobs’ demonstration true? Or was it a petty attempt to prove all smartphones have antenna defects? CyberClean is bright yellow and looks like the jars of slime popular with kids. However this stuff actually serves a useful purpose. To use, slide it into your hands and knead it for a few seconds. Unless your hands are sweaty it won’t feel slimy at all. Once it’s pliable, simply press it down onto your keyboard and lift. I used it on my husband’s cordless keyboard and my laptop keyboard, both with excellent results. It doesn’t stick or leave any kind of residue and you’ll be amazed at the gunk it pulls out of your keyboard! I had no idea my laptop keyboard was as dirty as it was until I used CyberClean on it. It pulled up a ton of crumbs, dust, and cat hair (I have two!) It’s a lot easier, safer, and more efficient than using canned air or just turning the keyboard over and tapping it (which is difficult and dangerous for laptops!). CyberClean also claims to kill 99.9% of germs. It can be used on cellphones, remote controls, iPods, and other gadgets and is reusable up to 70 times. Give it a try and let me know what you think! It’s available at most major retailers for about $8-$10. The flaw involves .ink files, which are the shortcuts that are displayed on the desktop. Hackers are creating malicious .ink files and distributing them via USB drives and other methods including peer to peer networks. To become infected all the user has to do is view the file. The malware installed is called Stuxnet. It installed a Trojan that downloads other malware including a rootkit that hides all evidence of the attack. The malware bypasses ALL of the security measures in Windows including User Account Control prompts and the disabling of AutoPlay and AutoRun. This malware is EXTREMELY dangerous. The malware is designed to look for SCADA (systems, which run factories, power plants, etc. In other words, it's looking to cause havoc with the systems that run our governments, infrastructures, factories, power and manufacturing plants and other critical systems, Very nasty. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) Microsoft investigated the hole, acknowledged it, and inexplicably said they have no plans to fix it! Unbelievable. If they change their minds those still using XP SP2, Windows 2000, or Windows 98 or below will be left out in the cold. The company says they will not issue security patches for any version of Windows they no longer support and those users will have to upgrade to XP SP3, Vista, or Windows 7 to get the patch. Unless Microsoft comes to their senses the only way to block attacks is to disable the display of shortcuts and turn off the WebClient service. Doing so however requires editing the registry, which is not something to be taken lightly and only experienced users should even attempt it. If you're using an older version of Windows now would be a VERY good time to upgrade. You are simply not going to be protected from threats like this if you don't. Well, truth be told any new day means the launch is closer, but today there is some further details in the form of screenshots and SIM cards. First and foremost, the SIM cards, nothing really to look at here, but a Verizon 4G SIM card has been spotted in the wild. And shockingly enough, it looks just like any other SIM card. Otherwise, back to those screenshots. These are a little more interesting as compared to looking at a picture of a SIM. Unfortunately though, most of the details spilled here are what we have already seen. That said, it looks like the service will be able to offer speeds of between 5-12 Mbps downstream, 2-5 Mbps upstream and will be rolled out to 30 cities this year. In the end, its just nice to see further evidence. The one bit that seems to be new is that Verizon’s LTE offering will have a 30 milliseconds (ms) latency. Which for those not as familiar with that number, its much lower than the possible 100 ms found in some 3G and/or WiMax offerings. With that, it still looks funny to see a Verizon branded SIM. A worker from Lens' quality control department has allegedly admitted that the company's screen-printing workshop may currently be dealing with some issues with the white iPhone 4 covers.
