Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile It seems everyday we learn or see something new about the Motorola Droid 2. Only yesterday we saw some official looking images regarding the Motorola Droid 2. Earlier today, we saw the Motorola Droid 2 being prepared in a packaging facility implying launch should only be a few weeks away. Today, Droid-Life is sharing a picture taken of a Droid 2 prototype which proudly shows the device running Android 2.2. As you can see from the image above, the Droid 2 is clearly running Froyo, which confirms an earlier rumor stating the Motorola Droid 2 will launch with Android 2.2. One of the major features about the Droid 2 is the physical QWERTY keyboard. During my time trying out the original Droid, I thought the keyboard was decent and got the job done. I wasn’t particularly thrilled with it and I’m hoping the keyboard on the Droid 2 is improved. The tipster who owns the prototype claims the Droid 2’s keyboard is “phenomenal,” so I’m assuming the keyboard is better the second time around. The Droid 2 runs a MOTOBLUR skin similar to that of the Droid X and it features four different soft touch buttons, just below the screen. For those holding off on the Droid X for the Droid 2, it looks like the phone should be officially announced any moment now. Verizon relies on the science fiction theme, identifying the Droid phones with some kind of alien technology. This commercial pushes the limit of how far this goes and I am going to disagree with the geeks: this commercial misses the mark by a long shot. “The first commercial I’ve seen for the just released Motorola Droid X indicates that the PR team has another series of potentially stunning commercials set for TV screens across the U.S.” -Todd Osawagara, Media Bistro. Walking through the video, 90% of the thing features some future astronauts finding a floating rock. One bold astronaut sticks his hand in the rock only to have the arm turn CG and a Droid phone appear in his hand. The astronaut looks on in fear as the phone boots up with familiar robotic “droid” sound and eery red eye. Let’s pretend we’re not phone geeks for just a moment. I am not certain it was a new Droid from the commercial, as we see the device for less than one second. I couldn’t tell that it was bigger, if it had no slide out keyboard, what it was running, etc. Does it do something different? Can it use all the apps the other commercials talk about? If I haven’t been following the development of the Droid X, this commercial sure wouldn’t have helped me. But if targeted to phone geeks, it hit the mark. The CG is cool, impressive even. If you spend time playing Halo or in some other space-shooter game, you’ll love this commercial and might even ask for a Droid movie from these folks. I’d argue, however, that a viral campaign before launch would hit this intended target, if indeed that is their intended target. Compare that to the recent FaceTime videos from Apple. The commercials offer a heart string pulling look at how their FaceTime video calling app works. Like most of the iPhone commercials, they offer up something tangible to talk about, to even become a reason for buying the phone (I don’t endorse that line of thinking, but it’s certainly possible). Any phone could have been inside Verizon’s floating rock, only the iPhone can run FaceTime. In the end, it probably doesn’t matter. Verizon will sell a fair number of these to the folks that wander into their store. They probably won’t know 2.1 from 1.1 and that’s OK. It’s probably a safe bet that no one will ask for the astronaut phone. In fact, the HTC Droid Incredible’s expected ship date is also August 3. Recently, the expected ship date was July 23 and now it is August 3. Hopefully Motorola can pump out more devices and not have to push back the date any farther. Motorola certainly has its hands full trying to produce enough Droid X units and prepare for the impending Droid 2 launch. As long as this doesn’t turn into another Droid Incredible scenario, I think Verizon customers will be able to deal with minor delays. Maybe you should as the company Chipotle is hard at work on it’s new campaign, “No Junk” - an effort to donate money to the Lunch Box, an organization that helps to provide healthy school lunches. Chipotle announced they’ll increase their donation to $100,000 if they reach 1 million forwarded junk mail emails by August. Want to send them your junk? Simply forward your junk mail to nojunk@chipotlejunk.com. The company promises no email addresses are kept on file as a result of being forwarded. Further the company promises the content will not be read. "Clearly, Chipotle has many like-minded fans when it comes to making sure the nation's schools have access to better, more sustainably raised food," said Steve Ells, founder, chairman and co-CEO of Chipotle. "The immediate response which got us to 500,000 pieces of junk e-mail inspired us to increase our donation to The Lunch Box, an organization that shares many of our beliefs when it comes to sustainable food." Started on June 25, the No Junk campaign received a swell of junk mail, pushing the count above 500,000 pieces of mail. The company expects it will reach 1 million well before the deadline. The company feels connected to the non-profit Lunch Box through the quality of food each serves. The Lunch Box provides healthy lunches recipes with “no junk” to over 32 million children at 100,000 schools nationwide. From their website, “The Lunch Box is in beta mode. When fully functional, it will provide the multi-faceted approach necessary to transition any processed food based K-12 school meal program to a whole foods environment where food is procured regionally and prepared from scratch for the student population. As a free resource, The Lunch Box will provide the essential "tools" for examining, learning about, and implementing this type of healthy meal program. Nokia is quickly falling behind manufacturers who are using Google Android such as HTC and Motorola. In an effort to regain investor confidence and make a significant splash in the smartphone market, Nokia is reportedly looking for a new CEO to replace Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo. The WSJ is citing “people familiar with the situation” and those sources claim Nokia wants to make a decision by the end of July. Even though Nokia continues to produce the most amount of phones globally, a lot of those sales take place in developing countries such as India with low-end phones. Nokia can manufacture as many phones as it wants, but at the end of the day, smartphones are more lucrative than simple featurephones. Nokia declined to comment on searching for a new CEO. Granted, in the long story I would probably say that (so far) this is limited to a select few but nonetheless—bad screens are bad news. With that, the news is coming by way of several user forums (links below) and seem to include complaints such as flickering and banding and as of now users are trying to narrow these issues down to specific batch numbers. Otherwise, aside from being annoying to see happen, at least the Droid X is still covered should anything go wrong. Now we have images from a packaging facility where I’m assuming the Motorola Droid 2 is being produced and housed for the time being. Since the device is currently being mass produced, it seems likely a release date is just around the corner. Of course, the latest rumor indicates an August 23 launch, and judging by the pictures we have seen as of late, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Motorola Droid 2 launched even earlier than that. It looks like the phone will ship with 8GB of onboard memory in the form of a microSD. In addition, pricing should be $199 on a two year contract and $599 off contract. I’m hoping the price is a little bit lower and that it will run Android 2.2 out of the box. MOG touts its music data base contains over 8 million songs and it is allowing users to download as many songs as they want, but the music downloaded has to stay on the phone. Music can be available in quality as low as 64 kbps or as high as 320 kbps. In addition, it features unlimited streaming of music and users have the option of choosing to only play a single artist. However, if you want more artists to the mix, you can choose to add that as well. So far, MOG sounds great and the unlimited downloads is a great reason to purchase the app for $10, but there is one shortcoming of the iOS apps. The iPhone app does not allow for multitasking meaning if you switch the app from MOG to email, the music will stop playing. MOG expects to add a multitasking feature in the coming weeks for iOS users. Fortunately, for Android users there is already a multitasking capability. The app is available for download on both platforms, and MOG is offering a three day trial for all users. For those who don’t like Pandora, this may be a nice alternative. Full press release below. Via [BusinessWire] BERKELEY, Calif.—(EON: Enhanced Online News)—MOG (www.mog.com), the Web’s best on-demand music listening service, today announced its mobile streaming music application is now available for download through Apple's App Store and on Android Market. The MOG mobile app is free to download and users can enjoy a free three-day trial with no sign-up or credit card required. For $9.99 per month, subscribers get access to more than 8 million songs with unlimited listening and all-you-can-eat downloads, as well as MOG's desktop service which can be accessed using any PC and any browser. MOG is the first mobile service that lets subscribers download any song or album directly to their iPhone or Android phone for a low monthly fee. MOG is the first service to bring true "artist-only" radio stations to mobile devices. Users can listen to continuous, uninterrupted music from their favorite artists for as long as they want with no ads and no limit on the number of consecutive tracks by a single artist. Listeners can also discover new artists by using the player's unique slider control to introduce similar artists into the mix. The slider is powered by "MOG Mobius," a patent-pending music discovery engine. "Today’s music lovers want the ability to listen to their favorite music wherever they want without having to pay for each individual track," said David Hyman, founder and CEO of MOG. "With the launch of our mobile apps, we're getting that much closer to making MOG ubiquitous and making it easy to access the world's music collection on-demand for a low monthly fee." MOG Mobile features include: Unlimited downloads: Subscribers can download any song or album directly to their phones and continue to listen to music even when out of cell or WiFi range. On-demand streaming: Unlimited listening to any artist, album, or song at any time. MOG Radio: Only MOG offers the patent-pending "MOG Mobius" music discovery engine, which enables users to control the mix of similar artists, from true “artist only” radio up to a full mix of similar artists. Last year, the anti-piracy group Bescherming Rechten Entertainment Industrie Nederland (BREIN) sued the three founding members of the Pirate Bay citing that the website promoted copyright infringement and needed to be stopped. What’s worse is that the founders of the site, Gottfrid Svartholm, Fredrik Neij and Peter Sunde, will be hit with a fine of €50,000 (or $64,590) for every day the site remains up and running. Ouch. These guys can’t seem to catch a break. Previously, the founders of the bay stated that they were not the owners and that the site was actually owned by a French-based company named Reservella. As you can imagine, that didn’t turn out too well. Seeing as how the founders couldn’t name the actual owners or provide legitimate documentation of the site being sold, the court concluded that the defendants were solely responsible for the website. Fredrik, Gottfrid and Peter have also had a history of not showing up to court meetings citing that they didn’t know it was taking place. They might as well have said that their dog ate their subpoena. I’m sure that their previous truancy won’t be helping their case anytime soon either. The only thing to be worried about here, as in almost all piracy cases, is that an association like BREIN could use this case as a means to tackle other large torrent sites. This doesn’t look good. Pretty damn popular if you ask Amazon. According to the latest figures, ever since Amazon lowered the price of the Kindle from $259 - $189, sales have tripled. Of course with more people using the device, it is no surprise that digital book purchases have increased, but it has increased at the expensive of traditional hardcover books. For every 100 hardcover books sold by Amazon over the past three months, Amazon has sold 143 books for the Kindle. Now, that number is pretty impressive but in this month alone, Amazon has sold 180 Kindle books for every 100 hardcover ones. Keep in mind this number does not reflect the amount of free books downloaded by users, only the paid books. The fact that more people are downloading books digitally as opposed to purchasing physical ones shows that we are steadily moving away from physical books to digital ones. Such a move should be welcomed as it will save trees and overall help the environment. In addition, Amazon has sold 3 times as many Kindle books in the first half of 2010 as compared to the first half of 2009. Expect that figure to rise on a year-to-year basis as the Kindle grows in popularity. The full press release can be read below. Amazon.com customers now purchase more Kindle books than hardcover books—astonishing when you consider that we’ve been selling hardcover books for 15 years, and Kindle books for 33 months.” Kindle offers the largest selection of the most popular books people want to read. The U.S. Kindle Store now has more than 630,000 books, including New Releases and 106 of 110 New York Times Best Sellers. Over 510,000 of these books are $9.99 or less, including 75 New York Times Best Sellers. Over 1.8 million free, out-of-copyright, pre-1923 books are also available to read on Kindle. Over the past month, for every 100 hardcover books Amazon.com has sold, it has sold 180 Kindle books. This is across Amazon.com’s entire U.S. book business and includes sales of hardcover books where there is no Kindle edition. Free Kindle books are excluded and if included would make the number even higher. Amazon sold more than 3x as many Kindle books in the first half of 2010 as in the first half of 2009. The Association of American Publishers’ latest data reports that e-book sales grew 163 percent in the month of May and 207 percent year-to-date through May. Kindle book sales in May and year-to-date through May exceeded those growth rates. On July 6, Hachette announced that James Patterson had sold 1.14 million e-books to date.
