Section: Business News, Computers, Hardware, Peripherals, Storage I still remember the days of using a floppy disc to save my word documents and whatever else I needed to save. For a computer that could barely store more than a few megabytes, a 1.44MB floppy disc seemed to do just the trick. However, as soon as CDs became efficient and popular, I hardly ever used those floppy discs again. Only a few days ago, Sony announced it will cut production of the 3.5mm disc in Japan by the end of March 2011. Having introduced the world’s first floppy disc in 1981, Sony owns 70% of domestic production of the disc and peak sales occurred in 2002 when they sold 47 million units. A year ago, however, only 12 million were sold due to the vast majority switching to USB drives and CDs for portable storage. Some major manufacturer’s used to provide firmware updates on floppy discs, but many PCs and notebooks don’t even have a floppy drive anymore. You may want to hold onto your old floppy discs - who knows - maybe one day it will become a collector’s item. The Kindle, Nook, and even the iPad have all dedicated their services to consuming these goods. Up until now, the Kindle has dominated the space due to the fact that there were no real competitors. But according to Digitimes, the Kindle has some real competition in the Nook. Digitimes reports that: Digitimes Research senior analyst Mingchi Kuo cited figures from upstream suppliers as indicating that the nook accounted for 53% of e-book readers shipped to US vendors last month. There are multiple reasons as to why this would happen. Of course the Kindle has been out for a while now, which menas demand is dwindling for the hardware but soaring for the digital books themselves. With the Nook relatively new, its not surprising that people are buying more of them. But release date aside, AT&T has released a commercial for the Palm Pre Plus, and it is one that should teach Verizon and Palm a lesson. The commercial comes in at 35 seconds long and does just what it should—shows off webOS. It highlights items such as multitasking, notifications and 3D games. Not to mention, they are even bold enough to tout the “best apps.” Interestingly enough, the commercial ends with a “now available” notation though as of now there is no Pre Plus available on the AT&T website, hopefully that will soon change. Overall, we are still waiting on some more of the details, but so far it looks as if the Bold 9650 will be heading to Sprint as an exclusive and the Pearl 3G will be making its way into Canada by way of Bell, Telus and Rogers. Specs wise the Bold 9650 is expected to have an optical trackpad, 3.2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and GPS. As for the Pearl 3G, that should also have similar features and include the 3.2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n as well as GPS. The Pearl 3G will also be sporting the optical trackpad and come with the smaller SureType style keyboard. And yes, the details and specs are pretty light on both handsets as of now, but worry not as WES is getting ready to kick off and we should see some more details coming shortly. Of course, that is free as in price, but it does still come with a 2 year agreement attached. In the end though, we are not really surprised by this move, well maybe a little at least in that this did not happen sooner. Still free is free. This will allow application purchases through Paypal accounts on both the Google marketplace, and the iPhone application store. The interesting part: Apple has already agreed to support the update. I personally love that Paypal is pushing to get their service onto every platform. And it especially lifts privacy concerns. Allowing Paypal to make all of my purchases for me keeps fraudulent sites from stealing my money, and keeps things simple by attaching one credit card to my account instead of having to keep track of what I spent where. Paypal plans to launch their In App payment service sometime in Q2 to the US, Canada, UK, France, Italy, The Netherlands and Australia. It includes five devices, two of which this is the first time we’ve even heard of. They would be the Sparta netbook tablet and the Athens netbook. Both of them have 11-inch displays, an ARM processor, and optional 3G, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth connectivity. The Sparta’s design intrigues me quite a bit. From the looks of it, it can be a regular netbook with a full keyboard if you would like. But if you want it to be a tablet, it seems that the screen itself rotates independent of the frame bordering it. So when you go to close the netbook, you can rotate the screen and close it so you have a tablet instead. Also on this roadmap are the Streak and Looking Glass, two of Dell’s foray into the tablet market. This roadmap says that we could be seeing the 5-inch Streak within the next month which will be awesome. Some new info on the Looking Glass, the Looking Glass Pro, is on this roadmap too. Apparently, it is just an HD LG(Looking Glass) with a TV tuner in it. The regular LG will be this fall and we will be seeing the Pro early next year. What’s a bit disappointing is the lack of info on the 10-inch version of the Looking Glass that leaked last week. The rumor said that we would see it early next year but it looks like we won’t get it till summer next year since it isn’t on this roadmap. But this does confirm Android on the LG which is what I had hoped for. And it also confirms that the Streak will be going to T-Mobile instead of AT&T next month which the FCC had given us that option last week as well. With Android on the LG, do you guys think it will be a much bigger competitor to the iPad than anticipated? Give us some opinions in the comments. The new Bluetooth 4.0 is exciting for two main reasons: low-power consumption and high speed data transfer are priorities in Bluetooth 4.0. Low-power consumption could come in handy for electronics such as pedometers and glucose monitors. Obviously you do not want to keep charging and replacing batteries every few months. Bluetooth’s power consumption will be so minute that the battery can last years. Mobile phones and PCs can definitely use the low-power consumption as well as high speed data transfer rates. In addition, another cumbersome limitation of the current Bluetooth technology is the 30 foot range rule. However, Bluetooth 4.0 will make that a thing of the past as manufacturers can set limits of 200 feet and higher. The press release cites the upcoming technology as “to have significant impact on the fitness, healthcare and environmental control industries.” While that may not necessarily be the case, it definitely looks to have potential to improve our everyday efficiency. If you head on over to the most recent addition on the News and Update page for the Nexus One, the word seems to be pretty clear. “In the US, if you've been waiting for the Nexus One for Verizon Wireless' network, head over to http://phones.verizonwireless.com/htc/incredible to pre-order the Droid Incredible by HTC, a powerful new Android phone and a cousin of the Nexus One that is similarly feature-packed. It will be available in stores on April 29th.” If you want a Nexus One, then order the Droid Incredible. Is the Droid Incredible really the Nexus One on Verizon. That above statement sure leads one to believe that the Nexus One is no longer coming soon. Not to mention, a quick visit to the store page where you can buy the Nexus One has had all mention of it coming removed. As of now, you are just greeted with; “For Verizon’s network, you can buy the Droid Incredible by HTC, a powerful Android phone and similarly feature-packed cousin of the Nexus One.” Nothing is mentioned further to a specific Nexus One phone coming for Verizon Wireless.
