Buzz to reset privacy settings - users back in control

Section: Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking, Web Apps, Websites, Google

At launch Google’s stab at social networking outraged many at the lack of concern over privacy.  Since launch, Google has made many changes (rather quickly too) in efforts to right the wrongs the company committed.  Rumored to be tomorrow, Google will reset everyone’s privacy, asking users to confirm their settings.

The move is a good one, after all confirming privacy settings and educating users on what is public or shared is beneficial to all.  Last month, a letter was written to the FTC over Google’s breach in privacy.  Requiring all users to confirm their privacy setting should stem any lingering effects.

Our Shawn Ingram explains Buzz, “Buzz, at first glance comes off as a bit of a Twitter-clone built into Gmail.  It's a service for sharing short messages, photos and videos with your friends.  Of course, unlike Twitter and Facebook, there's theoretically a way to automatically include everyone as it just takes your friends from Google Contacts.  Buzz makes it possible to link to other web services like Picasa, Flickr, Twitter and Google Reader, which looks to be a nice feature.  Everything is viewed in the same box, so no going outside of Buzz to watch a video or look at photos, and new comments appear in realtime lie Google Wave.”

Can Buzz regather the steam lost over the privacy snafu?

Taking away the toys: 30 years no computer is too harsh

Section: Computers, Security, Software / Applications

taking away computer for 30 years found too harshA Maryland man, caught trying to meet a girl online who he believed was 13 years old, was sentenced to 30 years without use of a computer “for any reason.”  The convicted man was formerly an applied systems engineer.  A Federal Appeals court has ruled the original sentence was impractical in today’s society.

Certain jobs, such as those at McDonald’s and PETCO require the use of a computer to fill out a job application.  The court, a three man panel, his attorney and prosecutor agreed the sentence was too harsh and could prevent the convict from rehabilitation.  One could make the argument that both these examples cited might alone prevent rehabilitation based their attraction of young kids, just saying.

The stipulation on computer use also included owning a computer.  The ruling came in a 15 page document and modified the mans sentence.  From the ruling:

“Even a lot of blue collar work requires some computer use,” the judges wrote. “It is totally unsurprising in the realities of the modern world that in his post-release search for employment Russell has evidently found that computer use is required for filling out most job applications.”

Sprint order form reveals upcoming BlackBerry 9650, BlackBerry 8230 and Motorola ES400 releases

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Internal ordering systems always seems to be a good source of information for upcoming handset availability. Well, a good source assuming there is an employee ready and willing to leak those screenshots. Thankfully, that seems to be the case with Sprint as of late. And based on that it would appear as if the BlackBerry 9650, the BlackBerry 8230 and the Motorola ES400 are going to be available sooner than later. Of course, the Tour (9650) sounds nice, but I cannot imagine that many have been holding out for the Pearl Flip (8230) or the Motorola ES400 at this point. That said, if nothing else it brings more options to Sprint, and that alone may be considered good enough.
