Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile Paypal’s iPhone application is a very cool piece of software that allows users to “bump” their iPhones together and transfer money on the spot. If you have watched Hulu lately, you might have seen an advertisement for this cool new app. Paypal has now confirmed that both Blackberry and Android applications will allow users to effectively “bump” their phones together like the iPhone app. What hasn’t been clarified is whether or not this is platform-dependent. Meaning, will Blackberry users be able to use the Paypal “bump” feature with a friendly iPhone. Either way this is a very convenient solution for gamblers. It’s even better if you win. The Times of London and Sunday Times will charge readers to access their websites beginning in June. Times readers will pay £1 each day or £2 to subscribe for a week. The Times will become one of the largest news outlets to charge visitors to its website in order to read the news, something that users can access for free on other websites. The News Corp-owned http://www.timesonline.co.uk is betting that readers will be interested in their specific style of journalism and will be willing to pay to access its content. It’s a risky strategy, but one that major news sites are adopting in order to make money in a troubled industry. According to the BBC, only 5 percent of news website visitors would pay to access a particular site. The Times has about 1.22m users, leaving room for only 61,000 people who would be willing to pay for access to the website. However, that rule of thumb doesn’t apply to the Wall Street Journal, which has 407,000 subscribers. The Journal, which is also owned by News Corp, has proven successful at convincing readers to pay-up through specialized content that speaks to its audience. Whether the Times of London or New York Times will be able to produce similar results on a wide scale remains to be seen. Personally I liked that headset, so this comes as good news. Of course, the headset is not available in the US. As of now, it is listed for sale with MobileFun with shipping to Europe. That said, and assuming I could purchase this model, the price is right—only £14.99. In terms of features, and aside from the Apple Bluetooth headset styling, the TalkStyle Pro will allow for up to 3 hours of talk time, 50 hours on standby, is Bluetooth 2.1 and supports voice dialing. Additionally, the headset is small and light coming in at 2.1 x 0.5 x 0.2 inches and weighing in at 0.23 ounces. Additionally, the headset also ships with an ear hook as well as a handy little USB charger. And just about all of them (except the last) have been described as being creepy. Thankfully though, Palm still has some dedicated and die hard fans that take the time to create their own commercials. This latest comes from ThiesFX who created a 30 second commercial that highlights the Palm Pre—and hits the important features—without any creepiness. Anyway, watch the ad below and then maybe send Palm and email letting them know this is what a Palm Pre ad should be. Its simple and shows off the good stuff including apps, multitasking and integrated services. The adapters for such things are either specially designed for popular phones, designed by the manufacturers, or just generic adapters for other devices. The newest of these chargers is being made for the one smartphone T-Mobile seems to constantly push, the myTouch 3G. The myTouch 3G charger is called the myTouch Drop and Go Charging Pad, and is being made for T-Mobile byt PureEnergy Solutions, the creators of WildCharge wireless chargers. The charger will come with a replacement back for the myTouch 3G specifically designed for the myTouch Drop and Go, as well as three additional “PowerDiscs” to allow other phones or Bluetooth headsets to use the charger. From the look of it, the myTouch Drop and Go will be sold in T-Mobile stores, and presumably online. Wireless charging still isn’t anywhere near being commonplace, despite gadgets like the myTouch Drop and Go and the Powermat. They make more and more sense for smartphones that tend to run through battery quite easily. Being able to just place it down for a while while sitting at a desk or something certainly makes it easier for those who are bothered by plugging and unplugging devices all the time. If T-Mobile does well with this one, perhaps the carrier will expand the offering to other phones.
