Sprint to start throttling data speeds?

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers

Sprint Throttling
With the launch of the EVO 4G Sprint added an extra $10 to the data plan for 4G speeds and unlimited data.  Other plans are limited to 5 GB of data which is the same as Verizon and T-Mobile.  It looks like this summer Sprint may be bringing it’s data plans to the same level as T-Mobile.

A few months ago, T-Mobile announced that rather than charging extra for data above the 5 GB cap,or just cutting it off, it would start throttling the speeds.  That way, if you use a lot of data it would just slow down a bit instead of charging you more or cutting you off completely.  A document that Engadget obtained seems to indicate that this summer Sprint will be doing the same.  Engadget also point out that in the contract for the EVO 4G, it says that Sprint can limit speeds at any time without notice.  Sounds like a big indication that this could be coming.

The change would mean that those 4G speeds might be as useful for tethering a lot of devices if you plan on using a lot of data.  Although, it doesn’t mean the data will be throttled all that much.  It’s just a rumor for now, but it wouldn’t be all that surprising if it were to happen.  One thing is definite, though: even throttling speeds on the EVO 4G would be better than AT&T charging $45 for 2GB a month with tethering.

Wirefly offering the Motorola Droid for free

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

Motorola Droid on Wirefly

One of the hottest Android smartphones on the Verizon network is being offered for free by Wirefly assuming you sign up for a new two year contract.  Even though Verizon has started pushing the HTC Droid Incredible more than the Motorola Droid, the Moto Droid is still a very solid phone.  If Sanjay Jha could produce more Droids to sell, he would.  Unfortunately, Wirefly’s deal is only good through the weekend, so if you are eligible for an upgrade with Verizon, or want to sign with Verizon, you may want to take advantage of this sweet offer.  Verizon currently offers the Motorola Droid for $149 with a new two year contract.

Klearkase announces new waterproof kindle kase

C’mon, admit it. You know you’ve thought about taking your Kindle to your local community pool to show off your unyielding resolve for reading. The new KlearKase (announced a day after the M-Edge Guardian case) will be priced at $39.99. The Guardian is almost three times the weight and costs twice as much as the KlearKase model. This one is a no-brainer folks.

KlearKase delivers the ideal balance of design and protection for the everyday use of the popular Amazon Kindle e-reader. The case is designed to be left on all the time for continuous protection against spills, bumps, dirt and sand, as well as the rigors of travel, children and pets.

This is not meant to be one of those bulky cases that keep your cell phone from fitting in your pocket according to Bob Mckenzie, CEO of KlearKase LLC. The KlearKase is designed to be left on all the time while preventing unnecessary dirt, scratches and other mishaps from affecting your precious Kindle. The KlearKase will be available later this month on Amazon and pre-orders will be available next week.

Walmart to sell the iPhone 4 on June 24

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

Walmart Logo

In an attempt to make the latest iPhone available in more areas, Apple has authorized Radio Shack, Best Buy, and AT&T stores to carry the iPhone 4.  Also included in that group is Walmart who will be carrying the latest Apple smartphone on June 24, better known as official iPhone 4 launch day.

This is significant for a couple of reasons.  The more options customers have in terms of places to purchase the iPhone, the better for Apple.  It also shows Apple reaching out to electronic retail stores and allowing more to sell their products on launch day.  Not every town has an Apple store or AT&T retailer store nearby, but I’m sure most towns have at least one of the aforementioned retailers nearby.  Of course, no word on how many units Walmart will be stocking on launch day, so I would try to get to Walmart early if you do not want to pre-order the iPhone.  Just try not to get stampeded by an iPhone-hungry crowd at Walmart.

Windows Phone 7 marketplace will be a porn free zone

Section: Communications, Mobile

Windows Phone 7 marketplace will be a porn free zone

Microsoft has officially announced new polices for their Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. Their newly published application certification requirements state that there will be no pornographic, or “sexually suggestive” content allowed in the marketplace.

Microsoft is being smart about things in order to avoid making the same mistakes as Apple did earlier this year. Here’s the scoop:

“Images that are sexually suggestive or provocative, content that generally falls under the category of pornography, or content that a reasonable person would consider to be adult or borderline adult content.”

In non-porn related news, developers will have to pay a $99 annual membership with a 70/30 split similar to the Apple store and five free applications. The marketplace will however offer various types of trial modes.

Unlike Apple’s store, the Marketplace will also include a mechanism to allow time-limited trial modes. Marketplace applications will be able to use a range of business models: free, paid, ad-funded, and freemium (where basic functionality is free, and premium features are unlocked for a fee).

Motorola Droid 2 - they've fixed the keyboard!

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile

Motorola Droid 2 fixes keyboard, yay!

According to Droid Life, this is the Motorola Droid 2.  In this first look, it seems clear Motorola heard the user comments on the keyboard and have made some significant changes.  The rest of the phone stays true to the iconic Droid.

Let’s start with that keyboard.  Gone is the gold D-pad that so shamefully little use.  The keys appear to be raised more than the original and we’d bet have a much better click than the original.  Without the D-pad, the keys are realigned and it looks to be a much better layout.

Some specs didn’t change: screen size and the camera megapixel (at 5MP).  But some specs did, such as the processor, it gets a boost from 550mHz to 750mHz., Android 2.1 looks to be installed with a new, less intrusive version of MOTOBLUR.  Also new is what appears to be official WiFi tethering.  It seems unclear if all the talk of Moto’s 2GHz processor could find a home in the Droid 2.

Of course, no word if this tipster is showing a bound-for-US device or one for Europe.

Who's on Crack in tech: 6.11.10

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile, Gadgets / Other, Features, Originals, Columns, Who's On Crack

Whoa!  Are we excited about phones or what?  This week’s Apple announcement has set the pace for crazy sales claims, bloggers going gaga over iPhone 4 and the fanboy war continues into overdrive.  As usual, we suspect illegal drugs are involved - follow us and act as judge and jury on these crack allegations:

  • Gadgetell Blogger field trip
  • Hurt Locker may be calling you
  • Better ways to trip up Jobs on stage

Gadgetell’s own Greg Billetdeaux goes on a field trip

This week, Gadgetell’s own Greg Billetdeaux ventured into the retail world.  His quest: find the Sprint EVO.  Like a man, Greg admits his problems up front: “I am a Sprint user. In the past, Sprint has had very poor smartphone choices. I picked up the Instinct when it came out, and for the time, it was a good phone. Now, I go yesterday to check out the Evo 4G, Sprint's only comparable offering to an iPhone.”

Now, Greg can be excused for his soft feelings for the old Instinct.  Did Greg expect to really find the EVO?  After all, fell Gadgetell-er Natesh wrote this post, detailing the sold-out status.  I can sympathize if Greg was following the “don’t believe what you read” theology, but was that the case?

Strike that, we can’t forgive Greg for the Instinct.  Remember that phone?  That’s the one that came out swinging against a young iPhone.  Tell us Instinct lovers, are you getting ready for the Instinct 4?  Back in 2009, a young blogger had this to say about the prospects of an Instinct 2, “It would be hard for us to believe there will be an "Instinct 2" or loyal following with this phone, but I am sure there is someone who has been waiting for a pink version of the Sprint touchscreen powerhouse that was pitted against the iPhone in advertisement after advertisement.  Anyone out there willing to stand up and tell us how much they love this phone?”

Greg Billetdeaux, presumably, that’s who.  Here is Greg again going for an “iPhone killer”.  Will the EVO end up the victor?  The Evo seems a nice phone but will Greg think back on it with the same deference as he did for the Instinct -“for the time, a good phone,”?  I am not so sure.

Phone for you, something about the Hurt Locker

Will this be the line in the sand?  Our own Sue Walsh explains, “producers of the movie "Hurt Locker' filed court documents demanding a judge issue a court order forcing ISPs to turn over the names connected with over 50,000 IP addresses they say are guilty of illegally downloading the movie. Voltage Pictures says they must have the names to proceed with their case.”

50,000 potential targets of stolen movies.  Call Interpol, as I am pretty sure I read somewhere in French that it’s a criminal offense.  Apparently, sharing the film up to 5 months before its release was to blame for the horrible $16 million in ticket sales.  Wait a tic, is that what the Oscars were all about this year?

Avatar was robbed because the movie industry was making a statement on torrenting Hurt Locker?  Avatar was robbed and should get an apology from the Academy or whoever wanted to make this stand.  I’ve seen both, legally, and Avatar was far and away the better flick.  It should be James Cameron looking for these IP addresses, not Voltage Pictures as the spot Cameron cleared out on his mantle for more Oscars throws of the feng shui of his place.

Better ways to trip up Jobs on stage

When Steve Jobs takes the stage to intro a new product, the world seemingly stops.  This year, he had some issues connecting to the internet -attendees were hogging the signal.  This smacks of a Gizmodo prank, but they were banned.  Could this be their handywork?  If so, what can we expect next?

Gadgetell uncovered this list of future pranks planned on the iMaestro:

  • Sit in front row and insist the iPad is not magical
  • Keep texting him smiley faces
  • Find John Ives, tie him up, answer the call from Jobs and tell him that you found this phone in a bar last night
  • .
  • Hand out black mock turtlenecks to the audience to wear at the keynote

Which one will we see next time?  I can’t wait to find out.

Tablet-friendly version of Ubuntu Linux in the works from Canonical

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Software / Applications

Tablet-friendly version of Ubuntu Linux in the works from Canonical

Details of a tablet-friendly version of Ubuntu are beginning to surface. And despite not a ton of details being available, its likely to believe that we will see something along the lines of the netbook friendly version, Ubuntu Netbook Remix, which is currently available. Otherwise, the tablet-friendly version will be based off of Ubuntu 10.10 “Maverick Meerkat” and support things like multi-touch gesturing and have an onscreen keyboard. Of course, that last one was pretty much a given. In addition, there is word that there will be a wide variety of hardware support partnerships including Texas Instruments, Marvell and Freescale just to name a few.

As of now a release date has not been given, however based on the fact that the OS will be a spin-off of Ubuntu 10.10 its fairly safe to assume that it will come in October 2010. Personally, if they could just roll the current Netbook Remix edition into something touchscreen that seems to me like they would be off to a good start. Either way, I like Ubuntu and I like tablets and given that I look forward to seeing the release.

Shields Up: Hackers attack Wall Street Journal

Section: Computers, Security, Features

WallStreetJournal A new web attack is underway and it has affected anywhere from 7,000 to over 100,000 websites. Among them are such prominent sites as the Wall Street Journal and the Jerusalem Post. The hackers behind the attack used SQL injection to redirect users who visited certain pages on the sites to a malicious domain that attempts to download a rootkit to their computers. If it succeeds the hackers are able to take over that system completely.

While security experts noted that all the compromised sites are using Microsoft Internet Information Services Web-server software running Active Server Pages, Microsoft was quick to deny any responsibility for the attacks.

“The SQL injection attacks that allow the systems to be compromised are occurring due to vulnerabilities in third-party web applications and do not demonstrate vulnerabilities in Microsoft software,” said Microsoft spokesman Jerry Bryant via e-mail. “We do offer guidance for developers on how to code applications so they are protected against SQL injection,” he added.

The Wall Street Journal has since repaired the compromised pages on its site.

Barnes & Noble giving free coffee to ebook readers who visit a Barnes & Noble retail location

Section: Gadgets / Other, ebooks

No word on when this promotion is set to expire, however it looks as if Barnes & Noble is giving in-store visitors a free cup of coffee. The catch is that before getting your coffee you will need to show off a Barnes & Noble ebook reader, which can be in the form of a nook as well as the numerous available apps. And just to recap, Barnes & Noble is currently offering an app for the iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, BlackBerry, HTC HD 2 and even a Mac or PC. In short, if you want a cup of coffee for free, it should not be hard to find a Barnes & Noble reader app to install.

Farmville creators launch new game

Section: Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking

Zynga Watch out Farmville, here’s comes the wild frontier! Zynga, makers of the wildly popular Facebook game Farmville have a launched a new game called Frontierville.Unlike Farmville Frontierville ventures into RPG territory. Players set up a homestead and work to set up a frontier town. In response to user complaints that there isn’t enough to do in Farmville and not enough interactivity, Frontierville players are able to hire their friends for a variety of jobs, work on each others farms, marry and raise a family and much more. Interacting with the game regularly is much more important. Players that leave their homesteads unattended for any length of time may return to find them overrun with weeds or varmints or even damaged by weather changes.

Farmville has seen its number of active users decline over the past few months, and Zynga is hoping Frontierville will make up for that. It is definitely a step up. While Farmville lets players design and maintain a farm, Frontierville wants to give them a “The Sims” like experience. Check it out and leave a comment letting us know what you think?

T-Mobile may get iPhone

Section: Apple, Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

T-Mobile Got T-Mobile? According to some analysts you just may have a shot at the iPhone. Yes the rumors are starting up again and according to analysts at investment firm Kaufman Bros, T-Mobile is likely to be first in line to get the iPhone and could get it as early as this fall. They said they came to this conclusion after speaking with people involved in Apple’s supply chain. While in a way it makes sense because T-Mobile, like AT&T is a GSM network, making for a simple transition for Apple, (Verizon and Sprint are CDMA meaning Apple has to make some changes to make the iPhone compatible) and the company already offers the iPhone to it’s European customers, for now it’s just another rumor to add to the pile. T-Mobile is the smallest U.S. carrier and has a data network to match. If AT&T’s couldn’t handle the iPhone what hope does T-Mobile have? Still, if the rumor turns out to be true it will be good news for T-Mobile who suffered a series of brutal black eyes last year after a string of outages involving the popular Sidekick.
