Section: Computers, Mobile Computers Research In Motion (RIM) has been on top of the smartphone world since they perfected mobile e-mail on their Blackberry devices. However, with the space becoming more and more populated with Android and Apple devices, it is about time that Blackberry had an upgrade. The first upgrade is a touchscreen smartphone with a slideout keyboard. While this might not be revolutionary considering a touchscreen is pretty standard nowadays, Blackberry has another trick up its sleeve; a Blackberry Tablet. The Wall Street Journal had this to say about the tablet device: RIM is also experimenting with a tablet device to serve as a larger-screen companion to its BlackBerry phone, say people familiar with RIM’s plans. That device, which is in an early stage of development, will connect to cellular networks via a BlackBerry phone, these people say. It could come out as soon as the end of the year, these people say. What I found interesting was that this tablet will be reliant on tethering to power its mobile network. This means that so long as you have a Blackberry, it does not matter which network you are on. Then again, the fact that a Blackberry device is required to get a data connection is a bit of a downer. This will be Blackberry’s chance to own the business marketplace. What businessman wouldn’t want their Blackberry tablet on their desk or in their hands at all times? Anyway, it seems that Verizon is preparing to unveil what they are calling the “next generation of Droid” at an invitation only press event on June 23rd. Of course, most people believe this will be the Droid X, and we here at Gadgetell also think that to be the case. I guess now comes the other questions such as how much will it cost and when will it actually be available for purchase. Either way, with speakers such as John Stratton, Andy Rubin, Sanjay Jha and Shantanu Narayen this will be an interesting event to watch. Granted, for most average users this is not anything that will never cause any issue—but still, those who are a little more advanced will consider this a total turn off. And just for clarification, the screenshots above are showing the HTC Aria on the left and the Nexus One on the right. Given that, you can clearly see that the top setting, “Unknown sources” is not showing on the HTC Aria. Of course, the Pro designation means that is will be sporting a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Otherwise, the features will include Android, a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, Super AMOLED display, 1GHz “Hummingbird” processor, 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM and 8GB of internal storage. As of now we are still waiting to hear something in terms of a release time frame. Not to mention which version of Android the Galaxy Pro S will be running. The camera, which was covered by a beat up underwater case, wound up being in superb condition. Shultz, with no luck identifying the owner with the pics on the memory card, turned to Scubaboard.com with some of the pics. It took only a matter of days until the pics were identified to be taken in Aruba approximately 1,100 miles from where the camera was located. Schultz would then go on to post the pics at Aruba.com which would be identified by a woman who recognized some of the children in the photos. As it turns out, the camera belonged to Dick de Bruin, a sergeant in the Royal Dutch Navy. Bruin was trying to salvage an anchor from the USS Powell for a WWII memorial when his camera floated away. It gets better. The craziest part of the story is that during the camera’s 1,100 mile journey, it happened to get caught in the hands (or shell) of a sea turtle as the camera was filming video. Who knows, maybe the sea turtle was a mutant teenager with opposable thumbs and had a knack for technology. The promotion period starts at 8 AM on Saturday and anyone with a family plan or upgrading to a family plan will be eligible for a new phone free of charge. Basically, a family plan is any plan that contains two or more lines. Now, some phones may require a mail-in-rebate, but most of the phones will be sold out of the store for free. Of course, this deal includes all high end phones such as the myTouch 3G Slide (which normally retails for $180), and the new Garminfone (which normally retails for $200). Every new phone purchased requires a two year contract, so that is important to consider when signing up for the new phone. T-Mobile is hoping the timing will attract prospective customers as well as upgrade eligible customers to new contracts and new phones. Unfortunately for T-Mobile, the promotion date falls right in between the iPhone 4 pre-order and the iPhone 4 launch, which might entice T-Mobile customers to switch to AT&T for the iPhone 4. According to the rumor, the handset is sporting the codename of “Julie” with looks similar to that of the Xperia X10. Other features are said to include a full QWERTY keyboard, 4 inch multi-touch capable display, 1Ghz processor and Windows Phone 7. As for when—sometime at the end of the year. Then again, this is just a rumor so we many never see the Julie. Google engineers are referring to this feature as “chromoting.” This news is being brought to us by Gary Kačmarčík, an engineer at Google who posted the following on a Google Chrome message board: “Unofficially named “chromoting,” Chrome OS will not only be great platform for running modern web apps, but will also enable you to access legacy PC applications right within the browser.”
This sounds like I’ll be saving an extra 3.5 seconds off of my life individually finding each program I want to run. Ehh, I would have wound up wasting those seconds anyways… By the looks of it, Google might be making some serious strides against the big boys in the realm of operating systems. The current trends seem to be pointing at lighter hardware/software a la netbooks. Why not just go all the way and instead of making the hardware lighter, we make the OS light and have a beefy hardware setup? I foresee a future in which operating systems as light as the ones on your cell phone will be the meat and potatoes behind nearly every computing device around. Add that with the constant rise in hardware standards and you’ll wind up with some sort of god like computing device within the next few years. Brace yourselves ladies and gentlemen. One of the most significant announcements came out of the Microsoft camp revealing production spec Kinect (formerly project Natal). And to our surprise with this new revolutionary piece of motion sensing technology we were treated with a new, sleeker, darker and cooler running XBOX 360. No special designation has been given to the new console of than “the new XBOX 360.” It comes with a new look glossy black exterior, built-in 802.11n (finally!), expandable 250GB internal storage, five USB ports, as noted 45 nanometer and integrated CPU and GPU that will allow for considerably cooler operating temperatures and last but not least touch sensitive ON/OFF with finger swipe disc eject. Early adopters of the original XBOX may have their doubts but one can only hope that five years, three versions and a slew of RRoD warranty repairs later they got this right. One thing is for sure, at a price of $299 who wouldn’t consider an upgrade? Dominating with 58.8% over second place, Android, at 19.9%, you would think that this is just further proof at iOS’s ability to stay on top. But looking further into the statistics shows that this is far from the truth. Rewind a year to where Quantcast did this exact study. iOS’s share was 64.9% and Android had a 7.7% share. So in a year, Android doubled its shares being the only operating system, in fact, to have a positive trend. Even in the last month, Android gained 1.3% where iOS lost nearly 1%. These stats are, of course, before iPhone 4 has been released so I’m sure we can expect a positive growth there. But if you look at the chart above, you can see when the 3GS popped up, in June, marked the beginning of a positive trend for iOS. Unfortunately, that lasted only for the summer and ended about a month before Android began its rapid growth in October. We can speculate this growth in Android really being sparked by the Motorola Droid which was released in November of that year. These stats, also don’t include anything from the Sprint Evo 4G which was released in early June. As has been reported, the Evo has been selling more than can be manufactured and there are waiting lists every where that sells them. And even though the Droid Incredible was released at the end of April, you are still seeing shipping delays, the latest being all the way back to July 12. So I guess the new question is can iPhone 4 gain back the ground it has lost or will the combination of the Evo, Droid Incredible, Droid 2, and Droid X just keep pushing Android up and iOS down.
