New Acer Aspire desktop PCs start at $449.99

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 06:06 AM PDT

What can I do to get you into a new Acer Aspire X3 or M3 Series PC? I can’t go lower on price – my manager is already busing my stones about dropping the price down to $449.99 – but how about I throw in a “space-saving chassis” and mention they’re an “appealing addition to a dorm, bedroom or home office.” No? Still nothing?

Look, the X3 series is the high-end stuff, a good, strong machine. This M3, though has only been driven one-hundred and then thousand miles by somebody I know personally who changed the graphics cards regularly. You can get an Intel or AMD processor to go with your X series or a nice AMD processor for M3. You’ve heard bad things about foreign processors? Where? Consumer Reports? They lie. They lie all the time.

Can we go into my office, sit down, have some coffee? Talk this over? I think we can make a deal.

Toy Story 3 clearly quite popular, has $109 million opening weekend

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 06:00 AM PDT

It’s safe to say that Toy Story is still Pixar’s biggest, most beloved franchise. The third movie, which Biggs inexplicably reviewed the other day—should I review the new Roots album here?— took home some $109 million at the weekend. That’s Pixar’s biggest opening weekend ever. The other big, animated feature of the year, Shrek Forever After, only took home $71 million its first weekend.

The 3D version of the movie was heavily promoted, and we all know that 3D movies cost more than a regular 2D movie. That’s the reason so many movies are in 3D, by the way: even if the movie is terrible, you’ll still end up making more because you can charge a higher ticket price.

It seems college students made up the majority of the audience, which makes all the sense in the world to me: kids nows majoring in "gender studies" and the like were in elementary school when Woody and Buzz Lightyear first appeared in their lives. What better way to spend an evening than watching some of your favorite characters all over again?

I’ve not seen the movie, but I’ve heard from people that it genuinely is worth your time and money.

Dell and Google talking about Chrome OS (as they should be)

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 05:41 AM PDT

Dell and Google are already sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g. The computer company currently offers Android on its Aero smartphone and Streak tablet. But a Reuters report is stating that Dell is “in talks” to offer Google’s upcoming desktop software in a computer as well — sometime.

Reuters,

“There are going to be unique innovations coming up in the marketplace in two, three years, with a new form of computing, we want to be on that forefront … So with Chrome or Android or anything like that we want to be one of the leaders,” Midha said, adding that there were no firm announcements to be made but talks were underway.

But that’s about all we have and isn’t much of a story at that. This report doesn’t suggesting that Dell will be a launch partner for the OS launch, but is simply talking with Google to eventually bring Chrome OS to its lineup. Chances are every single computer manufacturer is doing the same thing. If they aren’t, they’re doing it wrong.

Video: Toshiba’s AC100 Tegra netbook runs on Android 2.1

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 05:01 AM PDT

Hot on the heels of the W100 dual touchscreen tablet, Toshiba also unveiled the AC100 today, a 10.1-inch netbook that runs on Android 2.1. One of the big selling points of the AC100, which is the company’s first Android machine, is that it can remain in standby mode for up to seven days (the eight hours of battery life aren’t too shabby either).

These are the main specs of the so-called “cloudbook”:

  • 10.1-inch Wide WSVGA LCD screen (1,024×600 resolution) with LED backlight
  • NVIDIA Tegra 250 processor (1GHz)
  • “up to 32GB SSD”
  • 512MB of DDR2 memory
  • Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR
  • WLAN (802.11 b/g/n)
  • USB port, miniUSB port, HDMI interface, SD/MMC card reader
  • stereo speakers
  • 1.3MP CMOS web cam
  • weight: 870g

In the European press release, Toshiba says the AC 100 will become available “in the third quarter of 2010 throughout Europe, Middle East and Africa” without giving any details on prices or availability in the US. In Japan, Toshiba will start selling the AC 100 (under a different brand name and with different specs) in late August for $440.

B&N Confirms New $149 NOOK Wi-Fi, Drops 3G Model Price To $199

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 04:55 AM PDT

Barnes & Noble has just confirmed the NOOK Wi-Fi at $149, and a new lower price for its NOOK 3G model at $199. Engadget had earlier today posted a screenshot sent in by a reader that effectively showed a Nook WiFi coming out on Wednesday at the now announced price point.

Libretto W100: Toshiba shows double touchscreen tablet (video)

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 03:20 AM PDT

What’s better than a tablet with one touchscreen? A tablet with two touchscreens. That’s at least what Toshiba must have thought when they cooked up the Libretto W100 with its dual 7-inch multi-touch displays (1,024×600 resolution and LED backlighting for both). There’s no physical keyboard, but you’ll get a virtual one with haptic response.

Pitched as the “world’s first dual touch-screen Windows mini-notebook PC”, the device is sized at just 202×123×25.4mm and weighs 699g (battery included). It can be used both horizontally and vertically (thanks to the built-in accelerometer, it can be turned into an e-reader – as shown above). The battery life is pretty disappointing though (2 hours with standard battery, 4 hours with high-capacity battery).

Here are the main specs:

  • Intel Pentium U5400 CPU (1.20GHz)
  • 62GB SSD
  • 2GB RAM
  • WiMAX
  • Bluetooth 2.1+EDR5
  • Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n4
  • MicroSD/SDHC card slot, USB port
  • 1MP CMOS web cam
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit as the OS

Robert Scoble has made a video of the device (embedded below):

In the American press release (copied and pasted below), Toshiba speaks of a “limited run of the libretto W100″ that will be made available later this summer. In Japan, the device will go on sale at the end of August with a price tag of $1,320.

Update: Make sure to check out netbooked’s awesome hands-on report, too.

Revealed as Part of Toshiba's 25th Anniversary of Laptop Innovation Milestone, libretto W100 Demonstrates Next-Gen Ultra-Mobile PC Design With Full Windows 7 Functionality

IRVINE, Calif. – June 21, 2010 – Embodying a quarter-century of innovation, Toshiba's Digital Products Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today announced the libretto® W100, a next-gen ultra-mobile concept PC. This limited-edition 25th Anniversary device goes beyond slates, netbooks and smartphones to deliver something more: a full Windows® 7 experience that can be enjoyed across two multi-touch touch screens.

"The libretto W100 continues the libretto brand's heritage of defying convention by packaging a full Windows computing experience into highly compact ultra-mobile form factor," said Carl Pinto, vice president of product development, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division. "This concept PC sets the pace for Toshiba's continued commitment to innovation, demonstrating what's possible in the next generation of ultra-mobile PCs.
"We will issue a limited run of the libretto W100," continued Pinto. "We design our products around the way people actually want to use them, so getting this concept PC out into the hands of early technology adopters will allow us to gather invaluable feedback that we can filter into future product developments."

Optimized for Versatility, Performance and Convenience
The libretto W100 is powered by Windows 7 Home Premium and comes equipped with an Intel® Pentium® processor1, 2GB of fast DDR3 memory2 and a 62GB solid state drive3 – plenty of horsepower for enjoying rich Internet and multimedia content. With the libretto W100, users can take advantage of all the Windows applications they commonly use, including productivity apps like Microsoft Office and video chat like Skype™. Built-in connectivity features, including 802.11b/g/n4 and Bluetooth®5 give users the flexibility to connect from any hotspot or pair the device with their favorite wireless accessories, such as a mouse, headphones and more.
Innovative Design for Multi-tasking on the Go

With an ultra-portable weight of just 1.8 pounds6, the libretto W100 is designed to deliver a rich Internet experience, multimedia playback and the freedom to multi-task – just like a standard laptop – but with the advantage of two seven-inch diagonal touch screens7 to work, watch and play on. The multi-touch screens can work independently or together, giving users the flexibility to decide how they want to use them. Surf the Web on one screen while checking e-mail on the other, view two documents simultaneously or view a webpage across both screens. A built-in 3D accelerometer allows the libretto W100 to rotate into portrait or landscape modes, making the device look and feel more like a book, newspaper or magazine.
Designed for portability, the libretto W100 features a compact and durable clamshell design with a brushed metallic finish. The traditional clamshell design allows the device to fold up for easier portability, while protecting the screens from breaks and scratches. Measuring a mere 4.84 inches by 7.95 inches when closed, the device fits easily into almost any bag or jacket pocket.

"Since producing the first Intel 286-based clamshell laptop 25 years ago, Toshiba has continued to take a leadership role in bringing new mobile computing technologies to market," said Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies. "This new libretto is yet another showcase of the company's technological laptop prowess – they have their minds on the future and a unique, creative view on delivering innovations and form factors that provide a full computing experience in very small packages."

Simplified Navigation with Premium Toshiba Apps
The libretto W100 features six virtual keyboard modes plus a virtual touchpad. The keyboards feature haptic technology, providing sensory feedback when the keys are selected, making typing fast, accurate and easy. Keyboard modes include simple, full, numeric 10-key and split thumb mode keyboard styles, providing users with options to fit their own personal style or task.
To make navigation as easy as possible, the libretto W100 includes several premium Toshiba apps that enhance the computing experience.
