Sprint ditches the Nexus One

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Google

A couple of weeks ago it was announced that the Verizon was not going to be carrying the Nexus One. Various reasons for this move might include the HTC Droid Incredible that was going to be released, the fact that the Nexus One was several months old, it wasn’t selling well in the first place, etc. But now it seems as though Sprint is the next to cut off ties with the Google superphone and opt for a brand new model. Sprint’s focus will now be turned to the EVO 4G to carry on the Android name in their service.

One of the very big advantages that Google had when they were going to launch the Nexus One was the variety of networks that it was supposed to be available on. However, now it seems as though carriers are shying away from the device in light of the next generation of smartphones. Although the Nexus One could not be called a failure, it was far from a success, mainly due to the fact that none of the devices were actually sold in stores but rather online.

Although it was an interesting experiment by Google, phones are now pulling away in the race for specs and features and that is probably the main reason as to why carriers are dropping support for it.

Diaspora: Could it be a Facebook Killer?

Section: Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking

Diaspora: The Facebook Killer

If George Orwell were alive today, he would more than likely accuse social networking juggernaut Facebook as the fruition of his 1984 nightmares. It is no secret that Facebook monitors basically everything you do. Many people have created groups portraying their distaste for the Big Brother-esque nature of the site. Others have even begun protesting and rallying their friends to cancel their accounts. It is however less known that by default, Facebook is currently sharing your personal profile information with third parties. You have to go into the settings and change this yourself in order to keep your “privacy.”

A few years back, Myspace was the medium. If you can remember a bit farther back, Xanga had a strong grasp on our lives. The point is, social networking sites do not really have any loyalty. That is to say people will jump ship once something better rolls around and Diaspora just might be the social networking haven we’ve been looking for.

The site is basically going to be a “personally controlled, do-it-all, distributed open-source social network.” Diaspora, which is currently being created by four dweeby NYU programmers, promises to be a very customizable experience for its users with a stern focus on privacy. That means you can share whatever you want to share and not have to worry about fifty of your friends reading love posts from a significant other or your personal information being sold to advertisers. Count me in.

By the looks of it, these four lads seem to be onto something that could explode within the coming months. They’ve already accrued over $22,000 to fund this project by supporters around the web.
Let’s help get this ball rolling shall we?

Who loves iPad?  Old men says Yahoo!

Section: Audio, Portable Audio, Video, Portable Video, Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Netbooks

According to some statistics released on the Yahoo! Mobile Blog, Apple iPad users are overwhelmingly men and overwhelmingly older. Many expect the younger generation to adopt new technology first and fastest, but Yahoo!‘s data is at odds with that view.  Their data might just surprise you.

According to Yahoo!, Yahoo! users are almost evenly split man vs. women (51% to 49%).  But when it comes to iPad users accessing Yahoo! products, that relationship skews toward men at 66% and women decline to owning just 34%.

Users age of iPad owners is another point of deviation from Yahoo!‘s average users.  According to Yahoo!, the greatest deviation from Yahoo!‘s average age occurs with 35-44 year olds, a full 36% above the average.  45-54 also sees a bump: 17% while 30-35 saw a 12% jump.  21-29 and

<20 saw significant declines in usage.

Is this the stereotypical "guys love gadgets" thing or is there something more going on here? We've seen

studies before that women believe they are better with gadgets then man; is the trend reversing?  Or are Yahoo! sites seeing something different all together?

Google Editions Bookstore signs over 25,000 authors and publishers

Section: Gadgets / Other, ebooks

Google is moving past offering just free books in the public domain.  The coming service, dubbed Google Editions will offer current titles from almost all American publishers and authors.  This weekend, that number ran past 25,000 adding up to over 4 million titles.

So far, Google’s been very quiet on it’s plans for Editions.  Some basic assumptions are like most things Google, the data will live in the cloud.  That could open up some interesting possibilities for potential sharing of books, the freedom to open up a book on a myriad of devices and never loose your place.

It’s clear publishers are open to online distribution and Google’s offer must be reasonable.  Unfortunately, that’s about all we know for sure.

Sony VAIO P notebook gets an update, now has an accelerometer and more

Sony has just rolled out an updated version of the VAIO P notebook for the European market. The new model is similar to the past, but has a few new additional features and some bright new exterior colors.

One of the most interesting was the addition of the accelerometer. With that you can use the little VAIO notebook in a portrait mode by simply turing it to the right or left. And with the trackball as opposed to a regular mouse, you will be able to scroll though any documents that you are viewing. Other changes include the addition of an optional Intel Atom Z560 processor and colors to include black, white, pink, green and orange.

Additionally, the VAIO P will feature an 8-inch (1600 x 768) display, a 1.86GHz Intel Atom Z450 processor, 2GB of RAM, 64GB SSD, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, build-in 3G and a battery that is said to offer up to 5 hours of run time.

As of now the updated Sony VAIO P will be available in June.

BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider shows up on video

BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider shows up on video

It looks like the BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider has shown up on video. Coming in at just 14 seconds, its brief and to the point, but it does offer a few items. First and foremost it seem to confirm the Bold branding, which you can clearly see on the back of the handset. But more so, this video does not make the slider format on the Bold seem terrible. In reality, the video seems to do it justice, at least enough that I am curious to see this in real life, or at the very least in a longer more in depth video. Oh, and the Bold 9800 slider is running OS 6.0.
