Norton continues to provide us with security apps not only for desktop solutions but moreso now for mobile phone users. The latest of these security apps happens to be the Norton Safety Minder, an Android app that lets parents monitor their children’s smartphone usage. With this, parents will be able to protect their children from the scalawags of the mobile world. The app lets you view your children’s mobile phone browsing history so that you can determine if they have been frequenting mobile site that will pose a threat to their safety. Additionally, the app also monitors who your children are texting as well as what they are searching on their smartphone’s mobile web browser. The app also blocks access to websites as well as SMS and MMS to individual contacts which you deemed undesirable for your children to communicate with. The Norton Safety Minder app is available now from the Android Market. It’s a free download and also has a paid version with more security features. If you think that the free version doesn’t offer enough security for your child and you don’t want to spend on an Android app, I think the better solution is not to give your child a smartphone.
Toshiba has just made its ultra-thin Android tablet, the AT200 available for sale in the UK via Carphone Warehouse. In case you’re not aware this tablet is known as the Toshiba Excite in the US. This baby measures only 0.3 inches thick and weighs under 1.2 pounds. Hence, Toshiba claims that it’s the world’s thinnest 10.1-inch tablet ever released. The Toshiba AT200 also features a 10.1-inch 1280×800 LED-backlit display, 1.2GHz TI OMAP 4430 processor, 1GB of RAM, 5MP rear-facing camera and 1.3MP front-facing one. Unfortunately, the tablet is still running on Android Honeycomb OS but Toshiba said that it will be upgraded to Android 4.0 ICS later on. The Toshiba AT200 is available now from Carphone Warehouse for approximately $630 for the 16GB model and $710 for the 32GB model. It should be available online starting today and in Carphone Warehouse stores by February 15.
If you’re looking to sign a new two year contract with a carrier, then you may want to consider doing so with T-Mobile on Saturday, February 11th. The wireless carrier is announcing a new Valentine’s Day promotion, and while the promotion itself does not take place on Cupid related holiday, it still spreads a lot of love and happiness.
Essentially, T-Mobile is offering up its 4G lineup for grabs including notable tablets such as the T-Mobile SpringBoard and LG G-Slate. In addition, every 4G smartphone can be purchased for free, but if you are going to buy a new 4G smartphone, you may as well go for the best. Included in the promotion is the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Amaze 4G — two Android 4G superphones on T-Mobile. If Android isn’t your fancy, then you may be interested in the BlackBerry Bold 9900 or Nokia Lumia 710, also for free. Customers looking to sign a new two year agreement on a Classic Plan or Unlimited Value plan are able to do so.
Consumers interested in the promotion are advised to visit a local T-Mobile retail store or online webstore for more details. Remember, the promotion will only take place on Saturday, February 11.
The Nokia Lumia 800 is coming to the US only through Microsoft Stores, and it will get there on Valentine’s Day. The Lumia 800 will only be available as part of a $899 bundle.
According to The Verge, the Nokia Lumia 800 bundle will pack not just the smartphone, but the Nokia Play 360 Wireless Speaker, Purity HD Stereo Speaker, and an in-ear Bluetooth headset. There aren’t supposed to be any plans to sell the 800 without the bundle, so you’ll have to want everything in the bundle to justify the price. The smartphone itself is carrier unlocked, so you can bring it to either AT&T or T-Mobile in the US. That account for most of the price.
The bundle right now is only said to be for black, cyan, or magenta. The newly announced white version should be coming “soon,” but likely not on the same day. If the price holds true, it effectively means that only die-hard Nokia fans will pick up the Lumia 800 in the US. It’s sad, but if the Lumia 900 comes out for $99, I’m sure we’ll just forget about the overpriced 800.
Today is a good day for those who have been patiently waiting on a status update regarding the first Raspberry Pi computer shipments. The first batch will be completed on February 20, 2012. If all goes according to plan, we should be able to purchase them by the end of February.
We also learned what the culprit was behind the hold up in a blog post on the Raspberry Pi website. It turns out a quartz crystal package was to blame. The company chose a specific package that was ultimately more expensive than the package they ultimately decided to use.
The first 10,000 Raspberry Pi computers will be “uncased development-style boards” and will be limited to one per person. The two models (A and B) will cost $25 and $35 respectably. We don’t think there will be any trouble selling these tiny computers.
LG is expected to introduce a mid-range Windows Phone device at Mobile World Congress 2012 later this month with a possible launch date of early Spring. The LG Miracle (pictured above) is expected to be a mid-range WP7.5 smartphone, which means it should be available for purchase at an inexpensive price appealing to those looking to save money on a smartphone.
In terms of specs, the LG Miracle contains a 4.0 inch NOVA touch screen display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 8GB of onboard memory, 5MP rear facing camera, VGA front facing camera, and will run Windows 7.5 Mango, HSPA connectivity, and WiFi. One of the more interesting features about the Miracle is the fact that it may launch with an NFC chip leading to different application possibilities. Of course, we will learn more information during MWC 2012 when LG is going to announce the Miracle.
Google has finally decided to bring Chrome to Android, as long as you have an Ice Cream Sandwich device.
Google for Android beta is here, more specifically it’s in the Android Market. Just like the desktop version of the web browser, Chrome for Android is built for speed and simplicity (though it is arguable that the desktop version is still either of those things). The omnibox is still there at the top, letting you direct the browser to websites or search with the same box. Your tabs and bookmarks are still there, as well. Chrome for Android will open the same tabs you have open on your desktop browser, and the syncing feature means your bookmarks will be there as well.
The browser looks a lot nicer than the default browser on Android, and should hopefully be nicer to use. The only downside to the new browser is that it’s only for Ice Cream Sandwich smartphones and tablets, so a vast majority of Android users can’t use it just yet. Hopefully that will change soon, either by more phones getting upgraded to Android 4.0, or by Google making the browser compatible with previous versions. I’d expect the former scenario to be the more likely one.
What can you say about this one, it is a geeky Facebook shirt that reads “I Like You, but I don’t Like Like You.” The shirt is currently available on shirt.woot.com and is priced at $12 with free standard shipping. It comes in royal blue, is available in a variety of sizes for both men and women and should go great lengths to make everyone see you as the geek you are. So go ahead, follow the woot link below and make a purchase, you know you want to.
We know that RIM is just about ready to release software version 2.0 for the BlackBerry PlayBook however we have yet to see anything in terms of an official release date just yet. But that being said, judging from a recent promotional sign that was spotted in a UK retail store — that release appears like it will be happening soon. Needless to say, aside from the sign touting the “New BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 Operating System update” and mentioning that the update is “coming soon” — it did not offer anything firm as to when. With that, we suspect we are going to be hearing direct from RIM sooner rather than later which means that if you have a PlayBook you may want to be on the lookout for an update notification to arrive.
Yesterday we mentioned how you could watch all of the 2012 Super Bowl commercials over on YouTube. And well, as it turns out those same commercials were also all being displayed on Hulu. Anyway, in addition to watching the videos on Hulu (and on YouTube) — those watching were able to vote for their favorites. At this point we have yet to see any of the results from the YouTube viewers however the votes are being displayed publicly over on Hulu. Such being the case we are now getting a look at the top 10 Super Bowl commercials of 2012 (as picked by Hulu users). Without any further adieu, the top 10 begins with Volkswagen, The Dark Side Teaser which managed to secure 12,000 plus votes.
Volkswagen: The Dark Side Teaser

Volkswagen: The Dog Strikes Back
Doritos: Man’s Best Friend
Skechers: GOrun Mr. Quiggly
Dannon Oikos: The Tease

Lastly, we should point out that these results could still change as the voting is still on-going.
