Amazon doesn't care if you root the Kindle Fire

Whenever a new tablet comes on the market, it almost immediately get the attention of hackers. The Kindle Fire is undoubtedly in the sights of people who really wants to hack its Android-powered innards. Amazon isn’t going to do anything to stop hackers either. Jon Jenkins, who is the head of Amazon’s Silk browser initiative, told PC Magazine the Kindle Fire is going to get rooted eventually. “It’s going to get rooted, and what you do after you root it is up to you,” Jenkins said. The Kindle Fire is capable of running apps that are sideloaded onto it. That…

RIM is not dedicated to a permanent PlayBook discount

Less than two weeks ago, RIM came up with a plan to boost sales of the BlackBerry PlayBook. In addition to releasing a big update for the tablet that includes much desired features, RIM would also work with retailers by offering promotions for the PlayBook. One of the first promotions we became aware of was offered to Rogers employees who got half off on the PlayBook. The promotions then came to the United States at retailers such as Staples. The PlayBook is being discounted by seemingly random amounts. Your mileage may vary, but RIM isn’t ready to make any price…

Will you wait for a discounted, ad-supported Kindle Fire tablet?

Today, Amazon is expected to launch the Kindle Fire, a tablet aimed at making the Amazon shopping experience better.  Word has come rather quickly that a second generation will be hot on the heels of the first release, perhaps releasing as soon as Q1 2012.  With this fast a product life plan, we’ve got to wonder if consumers will hold off for a discounted, advertisement-supported Fire, like the ones Amazon current offers for the Kindle ebook reader. There is much talk about how the TouchPad $99 price looks to be a real sweet spot price point for tablets.  Presumably, Amazon…

Killing the Shuffle?  Tip says Apple will

According to a tip to TUAW, Apple will kill off the popular iPod Shuffle and iPod Classic mp3 players this year.  While the Classic wouldn’t be a huge surprise, we’re a bit skiddish on believing the Shuffle will go the way of the dodo. With only an iPhone event announced for this fall, it appears the music event normally held is not going to happen.  The fall event is where Apple normally launched the latest refresh for iPods, right before the holiday shopping season.  This year, it seems Apple is skipping the event. The reasoning behind the cuts appear simple:…

Amazon launches Silk, a new web browser

Amazon today announced its new tablet, the Kindle Fire. The Kindle Fire’s OS is a heavily modified Android, so it makes sense that the browser is also heavily modified. Packed in the Amazon Fire is a whole new web browser dubbed Silk. Amazon calls Silk a “split browser” which means that much of the processing is done in the cloud. With Silk, instead of the web browser taking all the data directly from each website’s servers, that data goes to Amazon’s cloud service where it can be delivered much more easily. That means some aspects could be compressed, but it…

Amazon has a new Kindle priced at $79

Amazon has lowered the price of the original Kindle yet again. This time it comes with what looks like the most drastic design change yet. The new Kindle will be available today, selling for just $79. The lowered price loses the keyboard on the bottom of the device, making for a much smaller footprint, though it means you won’t be able to search for books on the device itself. The smaller size also make it 30 percent lighter than the previous Kindle weighing in a just 5.98 ounces. Everything else you love about the Kindle is here, even including the…

Sony wants theaters to start paying for 3D glasses

Supplying 3D glasses for movie theaters has become too expensive for Sony Pictures Entertainment. According to Hollywood Reporter, Sony will stop picking up the tab for 3D glasses on May 1, 2012. Popular 3D movies can result in movie studios spending up to $10 million on glasses alone, so Sony wants theaters to look into new ways to earn revenue from 3D glasses. When the general public goes to a theater to see a 3D movie, they tend to pay a higher ticket price for the privilege. The theater then gives 3D glasses to customers who are trusted to return…

"Let's talk iPhone" says we're only seeing iPhone 5

Today, Apple sent out invitations to an event to be held on October 4th with the tagline “Let’s talk iPhone”.  As usual, those that read the tea leaves are staring at the icons on the invitation to see what can be gleamed from Apple’s penchant for attention to detail.  We’re honing in on the “iPhone” part. The company stated iPhone, not iPhones.  In singular form, we take that to mean we’ll see just one new iPhone.  Not multiples, not a new mini-phone to draw in the kids of the day.  Just one new iPhone. That doesn’t mean we won’t see…
