Your on a flight and can’t remember if you actually locked your front door. No problem, Qwikset’s got a lock for that: Qwikset announced today their new SmartCode Lever keyless touchpad lock for internal and external doors. Users can operate the lock remotely via a web-enabled phone, the internet or home security panel. The lock is designed to integrate with existing security systems.
The Lever adds to the Home Connect line from Qwikset. Also new is the SmartCode Deadbolt which features remote operation is now Z-Wave certified. Z-Wave is a mesh of home-control devices that can communicate and update each other. These locks are capable of sending text messages when they have been opened.
"The wireless, motorized deadbolt is what enables true remote locking and unlocking, and what differentiates the Kwikset SmartCode with Home Connect from other remote controlled locks that require physical interaction," said Dave Albert, vice president of Residential Access Solutions, Black & Decker Security Hardware Division.
Today, I had a babysitter locked out of my place claiming the key didn’t work. It sure would have been easier to whip out my iPhone and unlock the door for her rather than dispatching someone to unlock it.
Set top boxes that stream content across a network seem to be fairly popular as of late. Not wanting to be left out, LaCie has decided to enter the space with its LaCinema HD. To go along with its recent Rikiki external hard drive, the LaCinema HD appears to be a rather unassuming, if surprisingly small, black box.
The LaCinema HD turns out to be a media streaming box. It can also store content, however, on its 500 GB hard drive, and is has a USB port so you can add more storage. The LaCinema HD has built-in Wi-Fi to connect to your home network to access media, though it also has ethernet in case you don't trust the dedicated stream.
The interface will seem familiar to anyone who has ever used the XMB on a PlayStation 3 or PSP. It has the options put into icon along a horizontal bar, with the options falling out from under each icon as it's selected. The table-wide network LaCie had set up looked to run HD video smoothly, though how well it will work in the real world is unknown right now. For now, a 500 GB box to store and playback media isn't a bad idea, even if it doesn't have Netflix or other Internet video streaming.
Its no secret that we'e going to see a number of netbooks and even MIDs at CES this week. A large portion of them are likely to have 3G or even 4G connectivity. Those would all require contracts and monthly fee, however. That doesn't appear to be the case with Truecall Datawind's MIDs.
In the second quarter of this year, Truecall looks to introduce its UbiSurfer and PocketSurfer 3. Both devices are essentially small form factors to use for the Internet. The devices boot straight into a web browser that appears to be Firefox based. They will come in both GSM and CDMA, each with 30 hours of free Internet access a month for the first year.
The biggest differences between the two is price, the Ubisurfer will cost $199, while the PocketSurfer 3 will cost $249. The extra $50 will lose the Wi-Fi in the Ubisurfer, but gain GPS. The PocketSurfer sacrifices a lot to be so small, a normal-feeling keyboard (instead featuring a flat surface), a well placed trackpad (the trackpad is located at the top right, and only has tap-to-click), though its incredibly small size could help ease those pains.
Simply put, the Sling Touch Control 100 gives you everything you need to control your TV-related needs. It is a remote control with a 4.3” capacitive touch LCD that is capable of controlling SlingGuide-enabled DVRs over a WiFi network. You can do things as simple as browsing channels to searching and filtering through various information (genre, network, rating, language, HD content, channel, time and date) for a specific channel, all on the device itself. With this device, browsing for a channel of interest would be a piece of cake.
Apart from that, it can control various Infrared-based devices such as Blu-ray/DVD players, audio video receives, and digital media adapters, abolishing the need for your device’s native controller. It comes with a charging cradle which is designed with a shallow angle, allowing usage of the remote while charging. Look out for the Sling Media booth at CES 2010 for a live demonstration!
Earlier today at CES 2010 Toshiba spoke very highly of Cell TV and how it represents the future of televisions. We reported earlier on how TriVector technology enables the television to convert everything on its screen into a 3D image, but that isn’t all Cell TV can do.
No matter how expensive a television may, the picture quality is going to determine whether it’s worth setting up in your home. Cell TV includes a feature called Auto View that adjusts every color balance based on the lighting conditions of the room you’re in. It also features built in wireless HD streaming capabilities, USB inputs, DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) and Net TV.
The Auto View technology also helps to accentuate Cell TV’s video phone feature by creating an image suitable for large televisions. It was explained how an image looks acceptable when viewed on a smaller screen using VOIP but looks horrible if that same image is many times larger. Cell TV is looking to correct that flaw once and for all.
Cell TV has the possibility of becoming the center of the home network with its 1TB home entertainment server. This allows many forms of media to be stored and viewed at will. 1TB of storage is more than capable of housing more movies than most people will ever see in a lifetime.
Cell TV will have two models named Genesis and Allusion that will be released sometime in 2010.
Last year, Monster showed off its first entry into the headphone market with the Beats. Today at CES the company announced a few additions to it's line up. The focus today was largely on in-ear phones including the previously announced Turbine Pro Gold.
Most of the new earphones announced are out of reach for most consumers. The first announcement came in the form of the Turbine Pro Copper earphones. The Turbine Pro Copper, contrary to the name, are actually better than the Gold. They will allow you to hear everything in a single recording, just as if you were in the sound studio. The theory being that with the Turbine Pro Copper you'll hear all the bad parts of recordings, but also everything that's great about them.
Another set of earphones with a similar design is the Miles Davis Tribute. The Miles Davis Tribute earphones are meant to be earphones that the famous Jazz musician would approve of, ones that will provide the "ultimate jazz experience." The earphones will ship with the 50 year anniversary edition of Miles Davis' album "Kind of Blue." They will retail for $499.
Both earphones come with Monster's new SuperTips. SuperTips are silicon tips with foam inside them to completely isolate outside sound without absorbing any of the music. The effect is meant to again mimic a recording studio with the sound isolation.
A Singapore-based eBook readers producer, Gajah International, will be launching over 10 new models in 2010. Building on their success with the EB-S601 eBook reader, Gajah wil be showcasing their new models at CES 2010. The EB-S601 is an eBook reader with a screen size of 6”. The soon-to-be released models will be sporting various screen sizes and specifications to meet the needs of a large group of demographics. Among the models include a colored eBook reader and eMagazine, although it is uncertain how the display of colour will affect the battery life of those readers.
Downloading eBooks onto eBook readers by Gajah will be via a proprietory Content Management & Delivery System (CMDS). It is unknown if this service involves any sort of recurring fees, or the kind of connectivity (WiFi, 3G, etc) this technology is based on. Perhaps more information will be available at their presentation booth at the CES.

The Pop Box was announced a few days ago, but was shown today at CES. The problem the Pop Box has is the fact that it's not as popular as say the Boxee Box. There are a few things the Pop Box has over the Boxee Box, however.
One of the biggest features the Pop Box has over the Boxee Box is its social network integration. With the Pop Box while watching or streaming a video you can easily access Twitter or Facebook to update your status, should you feel the need to. Pop Box, like every other set-top box, has Netflix streaming, though it also has apps to stream video from the likes of Revision 3 and Crunchy Roll. Another major draw is the support of just about every file format available.
The Pop Box certainly has promise, though how it will fair against other set-top boxes is questionable. The lower price of $129 for the standard version or $149 for the wireless version could help. It might be hard to draw attention away from the Boxee Box, though.
The Kindle DX, is a bigger version of Kindle in terms of both screen size (9.7”) and capacity (3.3GB). It is recently announced that the Kindle DX is now available in over 100 countries worldwide. The Kindle DX comes with Global Wireless, allowing you to download books using 3G, EDGE or GPRS signals (There will be no monthly bills).
The Kindle DX receives data from any WiFi hotspots or 3G wireless. The Global Wireless coverage looks pretty good with major cities around the world getting coverage.
The Amazon Kindle DX is available for pre-order now for only $489, shipping begins on January 19th.

During press day at CES 2010 a lot of people are glued to their phones. Between fiddling with cameras and laptops I looked around various rooms to see what kinds of phones people were using. I must say I was quite surprised with my preliminary results.
The majority of the crowd were using Android based phones followed by Blackberry, and the iPhone was coming up the rear. I’ve seen a nice mix of Android hardware including MyTouch 3G’s, European style HTC Hero’s, American style HTC Hero’s and even a Droid here and there. Sadly I haven’t seen anyone with the Nexus One although I’m sure there’s one looming around somewhere.
Don’t get me wrong, the iPhone still has a presence here but it’s not as dominating as I thought it would be. Perhaps users have multiple phones and AT&T’s service is less than stellar in Las Vegas. Perhaps Android is more prominent because it’s used by many hardware makers. Either way, it rules the day.
Running around CES I have heard about Netflix and different products that will allow you to stream movies, but in a little change we have a news story that gives us a little Netflix news that actually comes from Netflix.
It seems that Netflix has finally signed a deal with Warner Bros. and that deal will allow Netflix to begin offering new release movies after only 28 days. According to the terms of the agreement, Netflix will get a discount on Warner DVD’s, but also have access to movies and TV shows for streaming.
It seems now the only questions that remain is how long it will take before Netflix signs deals with other studios and whether or not Blockbuster will follow in their footsteps.
At CES 2010, DivX announced a partnership with LG Electronics in which DivX will install their DivX TV technology within LG’s new Blu-Ray players and home theater setups running NetCast Entertainment Access. This new Internet TV platform hopes to become popular in the newly formed department of Internet TV.
DivX TV will provide many sources of entertainment such as Hollywood movies, online videos, digital music services, social networking sites and more. In addition, it is possible to stream videos from your computer over your home network. The nice thing here is that the service can play any video format, which includes their native DivX format. In order to upgrade your current system, whether it is an LG Blu-Ray player or a system with NetCast Entertainment, all you have to do is update to a new firmware version from DivX. The firmware update will not be available until later this year.
As of now, DivX TV boasts nearly 70 channels and a lot of content free from the Internet. The Internet content includes full length movies and TV shows, not just skimpy video clips. You can expect to see content from entertainment sources such as the Associated Press, CNET, DailyMotion, Revision 3, Twitter, TED, and Picasa. I imagine that many other companies will sign on as this service becomes more popular.
The Nexus One smartphone, or according to Android team at CES, the ‘superphone’, will have Flash Player 10.1 soon. It is reported that the Flash Player 10.1 will be coming to the Nexus One as early as the first half of 2010. This brings a whole new level of functionality to the Nexus One in terms of flash-based applications such as videos and games.
Below is a video demonstration of the flash player on the Nexus One. It demonstrates various flash-based objects encountered on a typical web surfing session. There’s still some work to be done though, so don’t expect it to be released very soon.
The news came by way of AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega during the AT&T Developer Summit that took place earlier today.
Sadly though, we have no idea which two devices they will be. But the good news is that wait does not appear to be all that long, the webOS devices are expected to be available in the first half of 2010. That, and, Palm does have an event scheduled here at CES tomorrow. So maybe I can offer a few more details after that wraps up. Until then AT&T customers can simply dream about what we may see announced tomorrow.

In addition to their expensive earphones that not everyone can afford, Monster today announced some more affordable earphones. The line is called Jamz, and according to Monster they are virtually indestructible.
The Jamz are made with a full metal enclosure which can make the earbuds a bit heavy, but gives it the indestructibility. To prove how hard it is to destroy the earphones, Monster showed off a video where they ran over a pari of Jamz with a six ton forklift. The Jamz will retail for $119, or $149 with ControlTalk (microphone and volume control). There is also the Lil' Jamz which are more lightwieght, but will offer the same sound quality for a lower price: $99 or $119 with ControlTalk. The last addition the the Jamz line is the Mobile Jamz which includes a 2GB microSD card for your BlackBerry and several headphone adapters. The included card and software allows you to easily transfer media from iTunes to your BlackBerry.
While the Jamz are billed as indestructible, Monster has a plan in case you break them. To go along with Monster’s usual lifetime warranty, Monster will give you the second pair of earphones for free no mater how or why they break.
We all knew it was coming eventually, and today AT&T made it official. The cell carrier will soon start carrying Android phones. The announcement came today at the AT&T Developer Summit at CES.
With the exception of the Dell Mini 3, there are no announcements as to what phones specifically will be coming to the carrier, though some partnerships were announced. Those partnerships being HTC and Motorola. All are offering AT&T exclusive phones, which means any small bit of difference in design to denote a different name, like the Droid Eris. The Motorola phone will feature Motoblur (like the Cliq), but that’s the most detail that was given so far.
One of the worst case scenarios for tech junkies and neat freaks is having to stretch a long Ethernet cable throughout your home in order to connect one or more devices to the web. NetGear has figured out a way to connect all your devices using an everyday electrical outlet.
Powerline is a group of devices that plug into your wall to eliminate the clutter brought on by Ethernet cables. It connects HDTV’s game consoles, DVR’s and PC’s with very little effort. Powerline also disables itself when not in use to save electricity. NETGEAR is branding this product to be very environmentally friendly.
Powerline comes in three different units depending on what your connection needs are. The differences between the 85Mbps Powerline Ethernet Adapter, Powerline AV 200 Adapter and the Powerline AV+ 200 Adapter lie in how many mega bits per second you need transferred from your internet connection. The AV+ also comes with an extra outlet for noise filtering.
Powerline will work effectively in homes up to 5000 square feet and comes with a one year warranty from NETGEAR.
OnStar and Chevy announced a new application for popular smartphones that will allow users to see critical data, control charging and even remote starting the new electric Chevrolet Volt. OnStar created the app that will run on the iPhone, Android and BlackBerry OS. The app is a first for electric vehicles.
The smartphone app from OnStar looks to be quite handy. According to the press release, the application allows:
displays charge status – plugged in or not, and voltage (120V or 240V)
provides flexibility to "Charge Now" or schedule charge timing
displays percentage of battery charge level, electric and total ranges
allows owner to manually set grid-friendly charge mode for off-peak times when electricity rates are lowest
sends text or email notifications for charge reminders, interruptions and full charge
displays miles per gallon, electric only miles, and odometer readings
shows miles per gallon, EV miles and miles driven for last trip and lifetime
remotely start the vehicle to pre-condition the interior temperature
Created by the OnStar EV Lab, traditional OnStar features such as remote lock open, remote lock, remote horn and lights all required a call into OnStar. The new app will allow these features accessed from the app. That should make the service more useful.
Here at Gadgetell, we’ve a mixed view of OnStar. While the new app looks to be a great extension to their service, we’d be remiss if we didn’t reference the problems with older analog OnStar users that were left in the lurch when OnStar went digital and offered no upgrade path for loyal OnStar customers with the older gear.
The Volt is an extended range electric vehicle that is designed to travel 40 miles using electric power only. After the battery is depleted, an engine/generator kicks in to extend the range to 300 miles between refueling.
Pricing for the app/service is yet to be determined but will be available at the Volt’s launch targeted for late 2010. No word if OnStar will open the App up to non-Volt owners.

Press conferences are generally hit or miss, well that may be a little nice, actually, in reality they tend to be on the dry side. You have an intro, another intro, maybe another into, learn about some previously successful products, then hopefully some new products and that is usually followed by the company telling us any awards they have received—either for a product or for themselves.
So naturally, when we get a little laugh, it makes the event just a little more fun. That said, LG shared some Public Service Announcements with us today, and despite it being a serious topic they were good for a few laughs.
So without anything further, go ahead and get a good chuckle out of a few PSA’s that were created to make teens and tweens more aware that they should not be sending naughty text messages, either in text or picture format.
All excited to get a Nexus One? Did you get extra excited when you heard that only T-Mobile users get that $350 discount because you already have T-Mobile? Well we’ve got some bad news.
It seems that only new T-Mobile users get that full discount and get to pay only $180. Now, if you are switching to a new data plan, you only have to pay $279 which is still $250 off the unlocked price so I guess it is sort of reasonable. But if you are the unfortunate one that love the plan they have and just wants to switch to the Nexus One, well we have the worst news for you. You are going to have to pay $379, a mere $150 of the original price.
To purchase an unlocked phone, it would cost you $530. These restrictions are a real low blow by HTC who claims that these deals were the terms of the deal with T-Mobile. And if you look deep into the FAQ, you’ll find those same answers as well. HTC better sort things out and change that or they are going to lose a lot of customers before they even had them. I know the very first iPhone users will willing to pay that pretty penny for a brand new iPhone, but I’m not sure if Google has those same followers.
Smartphones are fast becoming a part of our daily lives. And now that there are so many, it’s also getting progressively harder to choose which one is right for you. Luckily, Billshrink has gathered all of the specs from all of the major players from smartphones and put them in a chart for you to ponder.
Right now the Nexus One has my eye. And now that my contract with Verizon is running up, I think I’ll be picking up a nice shiny Google “superphone.”
Skype today announced that it will now be able to enter your TV. Thanks to TV manufacturing partners LG and Panasonic, the new line of HDTV’s will feature embedded Skype. And, while the consumer will still have to buy the separate camera to actually use the service, it makes sense for Skype to move to television. The guy below will explain:
The big idea behind bringing Skype to the TV is that people want a more convenient way to communicate via Skype. While most people do like conferencing, yelling into a cheap laptop camera and microphone doesn’t give you the best experience. Also, now Skype will be able to spin off a family aspect of the service by connecting users to their distant relatives.

The Boxee Box has been around the blogosphere once already. But in light of CES, it’s no surprise that it is now being officially announced to everyone.
Boxee, if you do not know already, allows users to stream just about every type of media to wherever you want it. However, sketchy hardware support and troublesome installation made it difficult to stream to your television. This box is here to solve that problem.
Since it is officially made by Boxee, you can’t expect them to leave out any important features. And they haven’t. It allows streaming of just about all popular formats including: DivX, VC-1, WMV, H.264 MKV, and Flash 10.1. But if you feel like using a service to get your content, it can do that too. Pandora, Last.fm, Facebook, Twitter, Picassa, and Flickr are all integrated into the Box right out of the box (excuse the redundancy).
What will be interesting is to see if people are going to develop their own apps on the now available Boxee app platform. If the Boxee Box can get a solid set of motivated developers behind it, there is a very good possibility that you will be able to access just about anything from this Box.

If your not tired of tablets yet, here is something that is not quite a tablet, but is much better than all of them. Ok, well not better in all aspects, just one. This display from 3M is the newest in multitouch technology. Instead of just two fingers like all other mutitouch boasting technology, this one supports ten. It is a great innovation that is not all that surprising to us; it was bound to come sooner or later. But now that I think about it, I am not quite sure what I would use that many fingers for. The only solution I can think of is for a CAD drawing like the one shown above to show movement of prototype parts or something similar. I can definitely think of quite a few games that would spawn from this kind of creation though…
Besides that, the 3M Display M2256PW is a 22-inch display with 1680 x 1050, HD resolution. It is a multitouch LCD meant for users who need to utilize more than two fingers with a fast response time. The display has both DVI and VGA video inputs along with audio input and USB ports. It is also Windows-7 compatible.
There is no shipping information or pricing information for this multitouch beauty but expect to pay a pretty penny for it.

Google may be a leader in innovation in many other places with software like Wave, Chrome, Chrome OS, etc… But they conform and make the new Google Phone $530 if you want to buy it unlocked. If you go through T-Mobile, you can pick it up for $180 with a contract. The process of purchasing this phone will go through Google no matter what though. On a positive note, the site does say that you will be able to purchase the phone with a Verizon contract soon but no one else.
Be careful when purchasing this phone unlocked though. The Nexus One is a GSM phone which means it will only work on T-Mobile and AT&T right now. Another downside is that of the two, T-Mobile is the only one where you will be able to get a 3G connection so it’s not really worth the extra $350 unless you think you’re only going to use it for a year.
With the official announcement of the Nexus One came the official launch of its support page. On the page you can access video demos of each of the standard apps on the phone. So I guess if you were still curious about how the Nexus One works, and haven’t seen any of the other articles on the phone, well then there you go.
Another product that I was able to spend a few minutes with last night at CES Unveiled was the recent announced ZOMM Bluetooth wireless leash for your cellphone. And I hate to say it, but when I read about this a few days back, I thought it was another gimmicky product, you know, one of those gadgets that looks neat but one that you may not purchase.
That said, I am happy to say that after spending a few minutes last night with Peter Hauser, who is the CTO of ZOMM, I can say that my mind has changed. The ZOMM is actually a really interesting little gadget. Sure its a wireless leash, which will help if you leave your phone somewhere. But as much as I should not write this because it will mean that I am sure to lose my phone, but taking a chance here, my phone is generally in my hand and not able to get lost.
But that is where the other features come in handy, the ZOMM also serves as a speakerphone (hands free in the car), even allowing you to answer the call with just the push of a button. You can also double click that button and send the call to voicemail. Additionally, it also serves as a security device that will allow you to call 911 quickly and easily should you get in an car accident.
Anyway, the ZOMM is expected to be available in Q2 of 2010.

During CES Unveiled, which took place last evening, we were able to get a few minutes seconds to check out the recently announced Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid that Hunter mentioned yesterday. All things considered, the IdeaPad U1 looks pretty sweet, but that was on the show floor with the excitement of everyone hovering and surrounding. It will be interesting to see what happens when this comes to market, of course that is not until June 1, 2010.
I can say that the switch between operating systems (or modes) when you dock or undock the tablet portion seemed pretty smooth. At least smoother than I expected. The other important item, thee keyboard seemed to be of a nice size and layout, but that is really hard to say because its not like they let me take it for a test spin or anything.
So while we are waiting for June 1, keep reading and check the live images below. Also, try and keep an eye out because I plan to try and check this out again, and possibly get a few better images.
Straight out of CES, Eye-Fi shows us their updated WiFi-enabled SD card, the Eye-Fi Pro X2. This 8GB memory card has updated wireless support that utilizes new 802.11n. They also updated to Class 6 performance which means faster read/write times for you and me.
But the coolest refresher they gave the Pro X2 is what is called “Endless Memory Mode.” Unfortunately, it is not truly endless but if you upload photos to your computer within the next year (or however long it takes you to take 8GB’s worth of photos) then it should seem endless. What this mode does, is when you upload your photos or videos the card automatically erases them off the card for you. That way, you don’t have to worry if you’ve uploaded a photo yet or not.
Eye-Fi also introduced a new desktop application to coincide with the Pro X2, replacing the old web-based one. The Eye-Fi Center will help you manage your media with a drag-and-drop styled interface. The Eye-Fi center will not be up for download until the end of January as stated by Eye-Fi; but here is a link to a video introducing it along with a few pictures.
If you want to get this now, too bad. There is no listed ship date yet but you can pre-order it on Amazon for $149 if you’re anxious.
