Intel, being the large company it is, had something new to announce, though it seems to be just about the only thing new. Intel decided to focus its attention to TV, both in terms of hardware and partnerships for software. For hardware, Intel introduced it’s new CE4100 processor. It’s a System on Chip processor and also part of the Intel Atom lineup. The new chip will for processing of both broadcast and Internet applications. It even has enough power to support 3D gaming. The chip is capable of decoding two streams running at 1080p simultaneously, which is quite impressive. Also impressive is its ability to record uncompressed 1080p video. In terms of partnerships, Intel is teaming with Adobe, TransGaming, BBC, CBS, Cisco, and other media companies. Intel hopes that with these partnerships devices using the new SoC Intel CE4100 new interactive features. Adobe will be bringing Flash, and all the benefits of the platform to devices, with support for graphics and H.264 video. TransGaming will be bringing a new service, GameTree.tv to the devices for on-demand gaming, with a variety of games available from TransGaming and and anyone else who wants to develop for the platform. The media companies will come into play in terms of widgets that will held users find media and watch said media, or record it when it is set to air. I guess T-Mobile has finally realized that the $199 price tag was a little higher than many were willing to pay. That said, I am not sure that the new price of $149.99 is going to help it all that much, especially considering the early excitement around some of the other soon-to-be-released Android handsets such as the Motorola Cliq. As far as that $149.99 price tag, it still comes with the required two-year contract, but on the positive side there is not any mail-in rebate that you will have to deal with. Maybe this price cut, along with their recent celebrity advertising can help to convince a few more people to make a purchase. Of course, this just means that we now need to see T-Mobile finally do something with the G1 price, they are still trying to sell it for $129.99. Granted that is not a bad price, except when you realize that both Amazon and Wal-Mart are selling the same phone for under $100 bucks. Unfortunately for anyone here in the US, that little bit of news does not offer anything for us to get excited about because the Pre will be heading to the UK, Ireland, and Germany by way of O2. In terms of availability, the webOS based smartphone will debut on October 13 in Germany and a few days later on October 16 in the UK and Ireland. Additionally, similar to Sprint here in the US and Bell in Canada, O2 will be the exclusive carrier for the launch. Otherwise, aside from the obvious difference of GSM and CDMA, the Palm Pre will be running the same webOS and include the goodies that people have come to love it for. One bit that is unlike here in the US comes in regards to pricing, in the UK customers will be able to score a Palm Pre free of charge as long as the agree to a 24 month contract with a plan of at least £34.26 (about $55 US) a month. And holding true to the unofficial leaked image rule, this is far from the best of pictures. Anyway, according to the rumor, the FLO TV device is being made by Qualcomm, although we were previously told Audiovox and offer features such as 4GB of internal storage, a capacitive touchscreen and built-in stereo speakers. Now in regards to the image, despite the previous rumors that claimed the device would be “iPhone-sized” this particular shot makes it look really tiny. Of course, that also may be a really large coffee cup that it is sitting next to. Not to mention, maybe someone should have moved that off the edge of the table just a little bit. Unfortunately, while leaked images are always fun, they generally do not offer us anything new which means we still have no real idea of the official specs, pricing or a release date. In the past couple of years, MS has made an active move to become more standards compliant. If you downloaded the latest version of Firefox, you may have seen the HTML5 video tag in action. It is an easy way for people to put video on a website without needing plugins. Microsoft announced that their Internet Explorer will support the HTML5 video tag. What does this mean? It should mean that many sites may dump plug-ins for video like Flash, Silverlight, and Quicktime and just opt for HTML5 since Microsoft is now on board with the standard. Firefox already supports the HTML video tag as do Chrome, Opera, and Safari. While IE may support the HTML5 video tag, we don't know how well IE will handle the video tag. Ask any person who has designed a website to be compatible for every browser - then mention IE6. You might want to step back. Hackers hit Patco Construction Co.'s bank account at Ocean Bank of Delaware (also known as People's United Bank) in May, ripping off the funds in 6 separate transfers over a week. The account, which was used for payroll, was completely emptied. As part of the account's overdraft protection the bank took $223,237 from the company's line of credit to cover the withdrawals. Patco sued. They blame the bank saying the hacking is their fault and that Ocean did not do enough to monitor for suspicious activity. It is not yet clear how the hackers got into Patco's account. Several employees had access to it with their own IDs and passwords. It's likely a malware infected computer is involved, or someone with access fell for a phishing scam. So far, the bank has only been able to recover $243,406. I'm not so sure the bank is to blame, but I don't know what kind of security procedures their online banking site has in place. I do know that it was Patco's responsibility to monitor their account and that giving multiple employees access to it was not smart. The more people who have access the more likely something will go wrong. Archos, makers of very cool devices that very few normal people know about, just introduced its Archos 9, a 9-inch, 1024 x 600 resistive touch screen tablet. There is also an optical trackpad if you want to mouse around. The device runs Windows 7 (which has built-in multi-touch support), has 4 hours of battery life, and a 60GB hard drive. The only problem? The price tag is $499, which will probably keep it a niche product. Yes, it would be very cool to look up things on IMDB on this while watching a movie or even make it a home automation control center. However for $499 you could get a netbook with similar stats with a keyboard. On the other hand, this is not that much more expensive than HP’s line of digital picture frames, but has a lot more functionality. There’s a great video below from UMPC Portal. It is definitely worth a watch. You played arcade games and now you've got to deal with the possible "significant other approval factor" when you pick up home entertainment items. There should be little argument about the Joytron Singibigi joystick. Instead of the usual plastic look or silly graphics, the finish looks like wood. You can look super-sophisticated as you sip your cognac and kick some Ryu rear end in Street Fighter IV with this joystick. The Joytron Singibigi can work with PS3, PS2, and PCs with USB (I wonder if it would work on Xbox 360 via USB). What's the cost of this nice looking gaming accessory? $39. The 2009 6 and 7 Series already had HD Radio. Now the Z4 Roadster, the 1, and 3 Series will get HD Radio standard. BMW joins Ford in pushing HD Radio. Don't know anything about HD Radio? Let's fill you in. The HD does not stand for "high definition." In fact, it used to stand for "hybrid digital," but now it stands for nothing in particular. The name is a trademarked term for higher quality audio like 5.1 surround sound sent over the air. What does this really mean? If your town has a HD Radio station and you have a HD Radio receiver, you get better audio quality. Wacom just introduced its new line of tablets for PCs and Mac with mutli-touch. Wacom products usually are pen-based and are meant for digital artists and designers. There are several small tablets. The Bamboo Pen & Touch can still use a pen interface for quick notes and scribbling, but also acts as a multi-touch trackpad. At $99, the price is quite reasonable for a tablet with multi-touch. If you want just a pen interface, there is the Bamboo Pen. If you just want a multi-touch trackpad, there is the Bamboo Touch. Both of those devices will cost $69. There is also the $129 Bamboo Craft, a silver variation of the black Pen & Touch. The Craft comes with some extras for digital scrapbookers like a DVD with 26 scrapbooking lessons. Most of the Bamboo line also comes with photo editing software, the exception is the Bamboo Touch. These devices are all 9.8” x 6.9" in size. There is also the larger Bamboo Fun. At $199, the silver Fun is much larger at 8.8” x 13.3" and comes with three photo editing programs: Photoshop Elements 7 for Windows (6 for Mac), Corel Painter Essentials 4, and Nik Color EFex Pro 3.0 WE3 (corrects lighting). As a user of Wacom tablets, they are sturdy and work well. Pens never require batteries so your work will not be interrupted due to a dead battery. Today, I am still on the job questioning whether Microsoft has gone completely insane or just lost their way. The purported new Pink phones, leaked by Gizmodo, suggest a road map that no one can read. The new Pink phones take two form factors, both variations on a slider QWERTY. The phones are definitely designed to attract younger users and are surely the result of the Danger acquisition, so a Sidekick-like feel makes some good sense. The same image is used on both screens, so there is little we can ascertain about the UI. My vote is MS has gone completely nuts. MS looks to have designed a cheap looking device to compete with LG, Samsung, heck even the much maligned Motorola. Why would you want to do that? These look like mass phones that should be free or cost $49. Plastic-y and instantly forgettable. I have to keep looking up to the title of this post to remember what I am talking about. The expectation was Pink was going to blow us away, and it still might (sure we’ve only seen the form factor) but I don’t see anything that is going to make me look twice, do you? Yep, I’ll judge a book by the cover. The heart of mobile is data input. MS has beaten us down with a stylus for years, now it looks like they are going to ditch the stylus (hooray) and go with just keys. Still, if the hottest phones are built on touch using Android or iPhone or BlackBerry OS, the MS entry is already off the back. I think it is clear that I don’t get it. Could the UI have something that might blow us away? We can hope. We first heard about the ooma Telo back in January at a small event called CES 2009 and it will finally be released on October 1st, 2009. Unfamiliar with the Telo? Here’s how this works: buy the ooma Telo and connect it to your home network. Attach a phone handset to the Telo and you can make free phone calls forever (with some limitations). Last time we saw the Telo it was behind glass, but this time we got to handle the device personally. The Telo unit itself (the base station that attaches to your router) is not very large. Take a look at the included gallery and you can see how large a simple Ethernet cable looks when plugged into the back of the device. There is a handset that will also be released with the Telo. There are no bundles that include both the base station and the handset yet. Remember, you can use the base station with regular old telephones. That being said, the new Ooma handset is pretty for a home phone. The back is a glossy plastic, but the buttons are a matte finish. The screen was bright and easy to read. Back in January, there were plans for Skype integration as well. If you had a Skype phone number, you could have it sent to your ooma. Since the recent sale of Skype, the developer program that Skype had in place, is no longer active. If you had a Skype line and wanted an ooma Telo to bridge the gap, sorry. The design appears similar to the Sidekick with a sliding faceplate covering a full QWERTY keypad. The Pink is expected to have Windows Mobile 7 installed, the new OS that has been yet to be released by Microsoft. Windows Mobile 7 has not been given an official release date and has experienced multiple delays. The appearance of the Pink is not a complete surprise, especially since Microsoft had acquired the company Danger that was responsible for producing the T-Mobile Sidekick. Some design adjustments have been made with adding keys that are circular and a body with rounded edges. It is rumored that the phones are being made in conjunction with another manufacturer and will not arrive in stores until sometime in 2010. Sharp has been rumored to be producing the new phone. Microsoft has also inked deals with makers like LG to start offering Windows based mobile devices. A short while later, the good news is that Visual Voicemail is once again available for those using an AT&T branded Blackberry Bold. The visual voicemail is coming as part of the latest software update which Bold users can get by going to Options > Advanced Options > Wireless Update on their handset. One bit of fair warning though, this is not a quick update. When I updated my Bold it did take quite a bit of time to finish.
