We all have them – those "zombie" virtual machines that still live in our infrastructure, consuming resources, but not providing any real business value. Some organizations suggest that up to 40% of their VMs live in the realm of the undead! We're usually afraid to kill them (a.k.a. delete them) for fear doing so will come back to bite us when we learn that someone was actually using them. But we can't just keep throwing resources at our environment forever. Here are a few quick steps you can take to reclaim those wasted resources for redeployment: STEP 1: Identify zombie VMs - based on a combination of CPU utilization, storage I/O, and network I/O. STEP 2: Power them down – start saving on CPU, memory, & network resources immediately. STEP 3: Move the powered down VM files to cheaper storage – reclaim tier 1 disk for production VMs. STEP 4: Archive the VM – stub the VM file, and move it to cold storage. The key is keeping your VMs VISIBLE in your management interface, and RECOVERABLE in case they're ever needed. Commvault VM Archiving helps you reclaim those wasted resources for redeployment while keeping them readily available and quickly recoverable if they're ever needed again. |
