Xiaomi tries to live up to its nickname by working on Apple Watch 'killer'

Xiaomi smartwatchLenovo (through daughter company Motorola), Huawei, and now Xiaomi. The global invasion of Chinese brands is spreading from the smartphone business to the smartwatch market segment. And rumor is Meizu is next.

But for the time being, let's focus on the Moto 360 (again, not technically cooked up in China), Huawei Watch and… Xiaomi Mi Watch? We'll need to wait until getting confirmation on the…

SXSW 2015 – Day 2 (Saturday) recap

Day two. I'm digging having this Capital One 'home base' to work from. At Congress and 2nd, it's close enough to most everything without being part of major foot traffic. Plus, I can appreciate the sonic vibes of Massive Attack, Jazzanova, Thievery Corporation, and similar.

SXSW 2015 protestor

Better than the boring protestors in Sacramento

And so far, most of the morning has been uneventful. However, on my way to the first conference session of the day I did get to witness protestors against male circumcision. Does that make them pro-testes? Sorry, couldn't help myself. But I definitely give them props for a niche topic. Better than the people we have in Sacramento, but I don't know how I feel now knowing I've been "mutilated." Keep it weird, Austin.

My first session of the day presented the alluring topic of sideboobs. So while standing in line for the #darkside sideboobs conference, I traded tales with a few others about rooms being full long before the start. It seems it's a new thing this year, as these SXSW veterans themselves were a little bewildered. They groused a bit about how they had been able to attend rooms in the JW Marriott before. Neither had any luck there yesterday or today so far.

I think the 'headline' versus the speakers' content for this #darkside #sideboob matched well, unfortunately. You can read why here. A good dozen people walked out by ones and twos. I figured if I took the clickbait already, I might as well sit and stay. Everyone else in that ballroom did so anyway. It was kind of fun, some…

Deal alert: First-gen Pebble for $80 at Best Buy, $60 with .edu email

PebbleTechnically, the original Pebble wearable, the one that started this whole smartwatch craze back in 2013, is about to become obsolete. Not only is it around 70 in gadget years, but after receiving a nice, stainless steel refresh, two full-on sequels are now decidedly in the pipeline.

They say Pebble's already sold over a million…

Sprint gets first dibs on LG G Flex 2 stateside, charges just $504 outright

LG G Flex 2 redAndroid power users in the market for the "next big thing" have a tough choice to make this spring. In addition to Samsung's Galaxy S6/S6 Edge duo, and the HTC One M9, which captured all the headlines following last week's MWC, there's also LG's previously unveiled G Flex 2 to consider.

Like the M9, this snubs the Quad HD "fad" and settles for Full HD screen resolution,…

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active specifications leaked, headed to AT&T

galaxy-s5-activeUnlike the Samsung Galaxy S6, the Korean company didn't make the Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge waterproof, but the company has a history of launching a rugged version of their flagship devices. The case is expected to be the same this year with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active, which will come with dust and water-resistant…

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active expected to match S6's 5.1-inch footprint after all

Galaxy S6Forget everything you thought you knew about the looming Galaxy S6 Active, as probably the most Samsung-knowledgeable source today shoots down all previous speculation. Well, not all, but a sizable (wink, wink) chunk.

Namely, Sam Mobile says, it appears the rugged flagship won't differ as much from the "regular" flagship. It will reportedly retain the sweet…

Samsung Galaxy S6 sales now projected to hit 46 million this year alone

Samsung Galaxy S6You don't have to be a pundit or professional financial analyst to tell Samsung knocked it out of the park with the just-announced Galaxy S6/S6 Edge duo. And unless something catastrophic happens, like a large-scale Exynos CPU failure or premature iPhone 7 launch, it's safe to predict the "next big thing(s)" will obliterate old Galaxy S sales records.

They say 20 million pre-orders have been put in…

SXSW 2015 – If a bank can, what's wrong with IoT?

One of the things I've observed my first time here at SXSW is that talk about tech can go deep. Like, behind the scenes. There are a lot of minds and companies inciting change and building ideas in ways that the average consumer may not likely be aware of. Step away from the hype and marketing of smartphones, headphones, tablets, TVs, and so forth, and it's becomes easier to get glimpses of what future life may hold. A lot more than new screen sizes or bumps in hardware specs.

Capital One is not your average banking institution. They've sponsored me to attend SXSW 2015, given me a "home base" on 6th & Congress to sit, rest, and type, and they're also a "super sponsor" of SXSW this year. It's cool and all; I'm sure companies do this all the time. But Capital One being a part of SXSW Interactive…

LG G4 rumored to carry 5.6-inch screen in marginal size increase over G3

LG G4Although a very recent entrant in the mobile leaking game, @OnLeaks looks destined for greatness, standing out with a refreshing transparency and mad reveal tempo. Unlike veterans @evleaks and @upleaks, we know the "mole's" identity right off the bat, and that's exactly what adds credibility to the equation.

Even before he created this leak-dedicated Twitter profile, tech blogger…
