I was hoping to get a lot more out of this panel session titled, "We Are What We Click: The Dark Side of Sideboobs", but I should have figured the clickbait-y title of it all. (They admitted as much, too). Especially since Mikala Bierma, the associate creative director of BuzzFeed, was sitting on the panel. But it's not like I wasn't expecting the talk to have that marketing, brands, user-driven data side of it. I was hoping for a little more insight into the horrifying view of humanity based on click trends. Especially since the first description line stated, "This panel will provide a horrifying view of humanity, based on click trends."… Continue reading SXSW 2015 – We’re all suckers for sideboob sometimes The post SXSW 2015 – We’re all suckers for sideboob sometimes appeared first on GadgeTell. Man, the past couple of days have been a rush. Just a little over a week ago, I had a hint of a possibility of being able to attend SXSW 2015. Next thing I know, it's Thursday morning and I'm at the airport, on my way to Austin, Texas. If it weren't for Capital One sponsoring me for travel and accommodations, I wouldn't have been able to go! Much love. Home base, yo. So day one is done. And I'm sitting here at the 'home base' for Capital One, typing this as more bodies start to filter in the building for breakfast and chat. It beats the lonely hotel room, I can tell you that. Day two begins – it's been a blast so far. First-ever visit to Austin, first-ever SXSW, but it doesn't even feel like I left home. The area of downtown Austin feels a lot like old-/mid-/downtown Sacramento. Streets, buildings, weather (more or less). Oh, people too. Let me tell you about this guy I encountered Thursday evening. While walking back to my hotel, I happened to look to down the street I was crossing and noticed a lounge. Carousel Lounge. All we have in Sacramento is Pancake Circus, and my wife has threatened me with physical harm if I ever went there. You know, because I'd take all sorts of clown pictures and aggravate her serious dislike of clowns. Anyway, it was early enough for a beer or two, and I could hear the sound of a live band playing inside. Sweet. This Carousel Lounge has a clean, worn-in look. A little dated, but it's roomy with lights and fans that keep it perky. But if you hate clowns or circuses, this isn't going to be your cup of tea. Painted murals of circus activity wrap around the walls like intense prison tattoos. There's a huge pink elephant statue as the stage backdrop. And you still get the ubiquitous neon lights, mounted wall mirrors, and flat panel televisions on the sports channel. My favorite is the luchador zebra head decoration mounted on the wall. Luchador zebra. Love it! Sitting opposite corner to me at the bar was a very animated, obviously regular patron. Although he sported a full chin beard with a grizzled-gray… Continue reading SXSW 2015 – Day 1 (Friday) recap The post SXSW 2015 – Day 1 (Friday) recap appeared first on GadgeTell. | |
