Xiaomi smartphone sales tripled in 2014

In just one year, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi was able to increase its sales three times over. The company has announced it sold 61.1 million smartphones in 2014 alone, and that is a massive increase over the 18.7 million sales recorded in the year prior. Xiaomi has existed for just five years, but it is already among the top smartphone companies in the world.

Round-faced Samsung 'Orbis' watch with Tizen en route to MWC bow

samsung-round-smartwatchUnusually quiet during the year-opening Consumer Electronics Show, Samsung is undoubtedly working on a bunch of exciting stuff for MWC and beyond. The Mobile World Congress in March could be preceded or closely followed by a Galaxy S6 announcement, and to go nicely with the "next big thing", an S6 Edge and one or two new wearables may also debut.

Since the last smartwatch the Koreans brought to light

Finally, Verizon picks up Samsung's Galaxy Note Edge (US Cellular, too)

Galaxy Note Edge VerizonUp for grabs on AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile since November 2014, Samsung's groundbreaking yet somewhat gimmicky Galaxy Note Edge has just started selling at Verizon and US Cellular.

The "edgy" phablet was supposed to roll out in limited quantities, but supply has been steady all these months, so either Sammy ramped up production without making a fuss about it, or the Android soldier is too…

Lenovo's newest 7-inch Androids start at $100, specs match ultra-low pricing

Lenovo Tab 2Throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks is perhaps the best way to describe Lenovo's business model, with the Chinese giant's tentacles spread out evenly in the smartphone, tablet, laptop and desktop PC market segments.

Experiments abound, and the latest seems to explore the sacrifices Android slate buyers are willing to make in order to save a buck. How…

Never forget: Sony stresses Lollipop for Xperia Z3 is coming in February

Xperia Z3 LollipopSony had a full bag of nothing to show off its smartphone-obsessed fans at CES, despite building up the Las Vegas conference, but at least the Japanese company came out with yet another imprecise Lollipop ETA.

This one's a little less vague than previously flaunted deadlines, and squarely ties to the company's newest flagship offering. The Xperia Z3…

Samsung Mobile sits CES 2015 out, intros Galaxy E5 and E7 in India

Galaxy E5 Galaxy E7Well, this is interesting. Not to mention a little odd. Typically enamored with the spotlight of tech expos like CES, MWC or IFA, Samsung almost completely turned a blind eye to this year's Consumer Electronics Show, opting for a couple of lower-profile mobile announcements in India before the Vegas-set gathering could wrap up.

Granted, the Korean handheld kings brought a few computer monitors, SSDs and HD TVs to Sin City, but everybody knows smartphones, wearables and…

Headband can alert users of head injuries

A headband called the Linx IAS has been shown at CES 2015 that could help wearers get proper medical treatment after a sports injury. HTC dishes out yet another mid-range Desire phone: the Lollipop-running 826

HTC Desire 826Remember when we told you HTC was probably in no mood to reveal a higher-end device than the Desire 320 before MWC in March? As it turns out, the Taiwanese company had one more ace up their sleeve for the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show.

Alas, this isn't the mythical Hima either. Instead, it's a Desire 820 rehash with a Desire Eye-inspired design, UltraPixel front…

KitKat-running ZTE Imperial II available at US Cellular for $100, no $150 off-contract

ZTE Imperial II

In this avalanche of CES 2015 product announcements that's still warming up, no one would blame you for missing the low-key non-Las Vegas-related ZTE Imperial II introduction. But it's our civic duty to notice it, especially as we're dealing with a rare ZTE device not just headed to the States, but already available via a semi-major US carrier moments after its public outing.

CamKix's selfie stick

Selfie sticks, those long metal sticks holding up cameras that have been ubiquitous here at International CES, have quickly moved on to the backlash stage- one which now includes a ban from two major soccer clubs in England. Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are bitter rivals in North London and in the English Premier League, but more »
