TechnologyTell Review: Cambridge Audio Go Bluetooth speaker and more

TechnologyTell Review: Cambridge Audio Go Bluetooth speaker

New products don't always hit it out of the park the first time up to bat. Sometimes a second round is required to get that groove and impress upon the masses. When it comes to portable Bluetooth speakers, this means big business. The market is saturated with options, and manufacturers are vying to draw consumers to their niches.

Such is the case with Cambridge Audio and their second-generation Go Bluetooth speaker. The first version has done well, but there is always room for improvement when you have a passion. How does this latest from Cambridge Audio hold up? Read on and find out!

Design & Connectivity

The Cambridge Audio Go v2 Bluetooth speaker has a really attractive design with nice curves. I like the slightly convex shape with the gentle upward tilt to the speaker grille. This speaker looks like some miniaturized version of one that could be the centerpiece in a large living space. The choice of a satiny, speckled white with silver accents gives this speaker a very clean and posh appearance. Buttons on the top are the only elements with any plastic shine to it. You can put this speaker almost anywhere and it will look great.

Complete with international adapter tips for friendly charging

When it comes to small, portable speakers the Cambridge Audio Go is compact, but not compact-compact. The size of it is between backpack- and shelf-portability. You can pick it up one-handed, and it feels pretty solid with a good weight to it. It's not a wee wimp of a thing. But it does take up more space than some other portable Bluetooth speakers in the same size and price range. Maybe that's why it comes with a soft cloth bag.

Along with the carrying bag, the box contains an audio cable, wall plug, and additional tips. I was a little surprised to see a barreled cable for power instead of a standard USB input. But I suppose this ties back into the in between nature of its portability. The Cambridge Audio Go speaker does provide a 5V/1A USB output to charge up devices, convenient for when a connected smartphone needs more juice to continue on with the tunes.

The top controls are very clear and simple. The power button requires a press-hold to turn on, but just a single press to switch it off. The latter part is a nice touch. This speaker features Bluetooth connectivity that can pair with a second device. I like how power states and Bluetooth activity are accompanied by beeps so you know what's going on. Unfortunately, this doesn't apply to volume min/max. So you just have press until you're satisfied.

Those who choose to keep the Cambridge Audio Go speaker in a fixed place can appreciate how the auxiliary input is a hard switch. This means that if you're streaming audio through the 3.5mm cable, Bluetooth connections are completely ignored until you press the Bluetooth button on the top. Some speakers can automatically defer to wireless connections, but not the Cambridge Audio Go.

If you like to listen to loud music, the Cambridge Audio…

KindleFire-HDX-8_9If you just missed Amazon's recent deal on a refurbished LTE-capable Kindle Fire HD 8.9, ignored it because it was a refurb, or on account of the tablet's age, here's a better promo on a newer, cooler Fire family member.

Upgraded Lenovo ThinkPad Helix goes on sale at $979 and up

Lenovo ThinkPad HelixFor Lenovo, the introduction of a new ThinkPad Helix at IFA 2014 in September was a power move. The computer manufacturer knew full well the Intel Core M-based machine couldn't go on sale for another couple of months, yet they unveiled it anyway, to showcase their grand future plans.

Now, at long last, the 2-in-1 ultraportable is up for grabs. And it's probably not…

Android 5.0 update for Nexus 4 'locked and loaded', likely rolling out soon

Android LollipopIt's been a problematic past couple of weeks for Google's powers that be, which weren't able to handle Nexus 6's release very well, or dispatch Android 5.0 for older Nexus devices as quickly as we had expected.

Ironically, LG was very close to precede Big G in updating one of its phones to Lollipop, and Motorola kicked off the festivities pretty much at the same time as their old patrons. But we…

HTC Google Play Edition phones could score Android 5.0 as early as next week

HTC One M8 LollipopHTC has never been viewed as a software support champion, regularly lagging behind Samsung and even LG in rolling out Android updates. Even worse, they've snubbed solid, popular devices like the One X and One X+ for KitKat bumps altogether.

With Lollipop however, the Taiwanese are looking to flip the page to a new chapter in the company's development. They're already showing a tremendous openness to…
