Huawei makes smartphones, but you might now know it unless you've lived outside the U.S. for awhile. Or unless you stay on top of all things mobile and tech. But all that may soon change, as the company has been arduously working toward making a bigger name for themselves. The Android smartphone market is very competitive, but that hasn't stopped the tech giant from appealing to potential customers. So when Huawei offered me the chance to check out one of their latest, the Ascend Mate2, I wasn't about to say no to something new. It's not like I could go down to my local Best Buy and play with one. And considering my love for 'phablets', the Ascend Mate2 definitely piqued my interest. The company only shipped me the device – no SIM card – so don't be mad when the review doesn't mention anything about voice and call quality. Design & Hardware Right out of the box, the Huawei Ascend Mate2 smartphone doesn't look like much. Aside from the glorious 6.1" screen, of course. It has, more or less, a very basic smartphone design. The back of the device features a gentle curve, which lets it rest well in the palm. The only buttons are for power and volume. You've got the audio jack and Micro USB for charging. That's pretty much it. Humble phone with modest packaging The Ascend Mate2 is not flashy, and that's ok. It's embarrassing when tech pretends to be luxury when the materials are commonplace. Despite the primarily plastic body, the build quality of this smartphone is quite solid. This may come as a surprise to people who haven't heard of Huawei, since they're new here to the U.S. market. When it comes to curves and weight distribution, the Ascend Mate2 has it right. It doesn't matter if you're holding it in landscape or portrait mode. The balance is even, which also makes the smartphone feel lighter than it looks. Remember, this thing is a beast of a 'phablet'. I received mine in white – it looks clean but has a shiny backside. The black choice has a textured feel to it. Some will say that it's "too big" or "difficult to use". Welcome to the world of phablets and big things. I recommend using two hands; it'll feel better (that's what she said). 6.1″ screen size is great for viewing As far as built-in speakers go, the thin grill on the back delivers volume and quality comparable to most single-speaker smartphones out there. If you're into mobile media, I'd recommend a portable Bluetooth speaker regardless of smartphone type. But, more importantly, the Ascend Mate2 has a Corning Gorilla Glass III screen. To me, that's way more important than bold design or speaker output. In terms of connectivity, this phablet offers just about anything anyone needs. It has Bluetooth 4.0, 4G LTE, GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/a/ac, radio, all that. Everything you'd expect to have from a modern, newly-released smartphone is here. Again, it's all pretty standard with what you get. Although considered a mid-tier smartphone, the Huawei Ascend Mate2 packs hardware where it counts. The 13MP rear- and 5MP front-facing cameras are a pretty big deal. The internal battery is a whopping 3900mAh. Although the internal storage is basic (16GB, but only 12.7GB is available right out of the box), the 2GB of RAM is perfect. Most users should be able to run almost anything to their heart's content.
