As each day goes by, real life and technology become more unified than ever before. And in those areas where they aren't, it feels kinda weird. For example, did you ever drive by a billboard or some notable sight on a highway but your passenger missed it? For a split second, do you think, "Oh, just rewind it for her," as if real life were a DVR? I get the same feeling when I hear birds chirping. "What species of bird is that," I often wonder. Followed by, "Why isn't there a Shazam for bird calls?" Why can't I launch an app, hold my cellphone up, and have it tell me if I am hearing a warbler or a sparrow, a thrush or a grosbeak? Turns out, scientists are working on it, but it's taking more time than anticipated for a variety of reasons. We spoke to one of the preeminent researchers in this area, Dr. Mark Berres, assistant professor of avian biology with the Department of Animal Sciences at The University of Wisconsin-Madison, about the Shazam-like app he's been developing for a few years, called WeBIRD. Technology Tell: What do you hope will result if this project comes to fruition? In an ideal world, what would this app accomplish beyond its core function of matching field recordings with a bird call database? Dr. Mark Berres: I hope that it will become a learning tool that will foster an enhanced connection between individuals and their environment. Many environmental issues our society faces are rooted in unfamiliarity with it. Adults and children are strongly influenced by the media, a phenomenon known to extend into attitudes concerning wildlife. Logically, if proliferation of electronic media continues and environmental education is deemed essential to attenuate the continuing trend of… Continue reading Is there a Shazam for bird songs? Even if one hasn't been directly affected by such incidents, the perpetual flow of news is concerning nonetheless. Considering that internet connectivity is king and the internet-of-everything is touching, well, everything, fears are completely justified. When it comes to security software, defensive apps, and security tips to protect devices, there's a sea of choice to… Continue reading iGuardian flexes business grade internet protection at home The post iGuardian flexes business grade internet protection at home appeared first on GadgeTell. The biggest problem with mobile device manufacturers speeding up flagship upgrading cycles is that, sooner or later, no matter how hard you try to "innovate" every six months, there's simply nowhere left to go. And once you reach the point of no upgrade, you either skip a chapter and go back to the one-year cycle, or go about it Sony's… Continue reading Another source pegs Sony’s upcoming Xperia Z3 as Xperia Z2 clone The post Another source pegs Sony’s upcoming Xperia Z3 as Xperia Z2 clone appeared first on GadgeTell. I was on a glorious vacation last week in my exotic hometown of Los Angeles, and it was amazing. However, it was like as soon as I declared I wouldn't do any work on my vacation, the Internet gods deemed it would release all the most wonderful tidbits of writeable news. It was a tease, but now I'm back to remedy the situation. One of my favorite news tidbits was the new data that revealed when most people get their sext on. And while you would think it would be at nights or on the weekends, it is actually the VERY sexual Tuesday mornings that won the competition. Go on with your bad self, Tuesday mornings. Continue reading It’s Tuesday morning, so you’re probably sexting The post It’s Tuesday morning, so you’re probably sexting appeared first on GadgeTell. | |
