TechnologyTell Review: SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drive and more

TechnologyTell Review: SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drive

SanDisk is a leader when it comes to flash storage, although they're still a bit new in the app-creation game. While attending CES 2014, I had the chance to speak one-on-one with SanDisk about the current and upcoming products. If you ever wondered, SanDisk is one of those companies that actively listens to user feedback and executes in a timely fashion.

Since I had last toyed around with the SanDisk Wireless Media Drive, the app had undergone some radical changes for overall improvement. I also got to hear about some other upcoming news too. Before I left, they gave me one of their latest SanDisk Connect 64GB Wireless Flash Drives and encouraged me to take a fresh look. Compared to my previous experience with the Connect app, the difference in feel and experience has been like night and day.

Design

While some may feel it to be too big, I think the SanDisk Connect 64GB Wireless Flash Drive is the perfect size. Sure, it's larger than so many flash drives available, but it's got a good heft to it. It's also not as easily misplaced. I particularly like how it's one single piece that doesn't require a separate USB cable, as with the Wireless Media Drive. I slide the cap back for the USB port, and then stick it in a laptop, wall charger, or external battery.

Top slides back, exposes USB

The Connect wireless flash drive positions the USB connector so that the top USB port (in a vertical pair) is left unobstructed. Most side-by-side USB ports are too close to each other to have the drive plugged in one with enough room for a cable for the other.

There is a single button that switches the device on and off by means of a long press. The orange and blue LEDs indicate battery and wireless activity. The SanDisk Connect wireless flash drive gets slightly warm while in use, but not to the point where it's uncomfortable to handle.

When plugged into a USB port, the SanDisk acts like any typical flash drive. But switch it on, and users can access and stream wirelessly through the Android and iOS app.

SanDisk Connect App

Compared to my experience last year with the SanDisk Connect app, the current version shows great improvement and overhaul. Not just the layout and navigation, but the functions and features have been simplified and streamlined too.

Thankfully, SanDisk has set the flash drive's security password such that it works for network and direct-connect access. Previously, strangers were able to see and access the drive freely. The password as well as the drive's name can…

Samsung New Zealand spills the beans on Galaxy S5 mini's water resistance

Galaxy S5 mini water

Oops, it looks like someone over at Samsung New Zealand might be out of a job. Or at least up for a serious reprimand. In compiling general warranty exclusions for Samsung phones, tablets, Galaxy cameras and accessories, this careless employee forgot the Galaxy S5 mini is yet to be made official and included it in a category where only the S5 and S4 Active found a place.

Samsung teases April 29 announcement, basically confirms Galaxy K Zoom

Galaxy K ZoomThey say a picture is worth a thousand words, in which case a video is probably worth a million. But if it only clocks in at a few seconds, it's more in the tens of thousands ballpark. Still plenty to confirm the identity of Samsung's "Next Galaxy" beyond the shadow of a doubt.

Such a short clip, posted by Sammy on Instagram,…

If high-end phones lose subsidies, protection is paramount

As smartphones have hit a saturation point in the market, we're likely to see more carriers shift away from subsidizing new purchases. Although this kind of discussion has been going on for a few years, the topic has recently heated up. Top-tier smartphones could be less affordable to the general public.

If you've upgraded your smartphone once every couple of years, you've likely benefitted from a subsidy – a purchase discount for renewing your contract. Depending on the cost of the phone, they've…

Lenovo Australia accidentally confirms upgraded ThinkPad 10 tab with Win 8.1

lenovo-thinkpad-10Aaaand the cat is now out of the bag. Like, completely out of the bag. Not that we had any doubt the information spill from a few weeks back wasn't legit, but it's always nice to get official confirmation straight from the horse's mouth.

The horse, for metaphorical purposes, being Lenovo's Australian arm. The company's official website…

HP SlateBook 14 timidly breaks cover as Android-running touchscreen laptop

hp_slatebook_14We've seen Google's Android operating system run on smartphones, tablets, all sorts of tab-laptop hybrids, watches, televisions, cameras and even cars and refrigerators, but not many conventional Android-powered notebooks have come to our attention.

Mostly because Big G has Chrome OS to take care of business in that market. Yet a funky SlateBook 14 is just about official, following a video demo…

12 things that should be constructed from the mantis shrimp's protein structure

The mantis shrimp was recently discovered to have an exoskeleton made of what is essentially the strongest material… ever? According to the labs at University of California, the protein is stronger than the standard used in airplanes. Long story short, the arrangement of this protein's mineralized fiber layers allow it to withstand extreme impact forces and remain intact.

helicoid-model-and-SEM-Kisailus-copyUCA is now experimenting with the structure of 180 degree fiber rotation in other materials. This means we could have virtually unbreakable airplanes, trains, etc… in the future. But should unbreakable strength be limited to major constructions such as these? Why shouldn't my laptop be unbreakable? Why can't my curling iron be invincible?

I got to thinking about…

Everybody's talking about wearable technology, with awareness relatively high, but actual usage is still low, with some people abandoning the devices they bought. Now a new research study says the category is being held back because the products themselves are being designed improperly.
