Kids learn from parents' habits, and I can tell you right now that my youngest is a gadget-freak just like her dad. At one and a half years old, she can already tell the real TV remote controls from the fakes that used to keep her occupied, a few months back. Anything with screens, buttons, switches, plugs, or cables tend to land in her hands when you're not paying attention. Considering her persistence toward acquiring legit gadgets, coupled with the fact that she's still learning the physics of bashing one object against another, I needed something for her. An inexpensive device that could stimulate her probing and withstand her punishment would suit best. Thinking back to CES 2014 in January, I remembered the Vivitar booth showcasing Camelio tablets designed specifically for kids. The size is right, the looks appeal, and the price is fair. If it holds up, the Vivitar Camelio Tablet could also be used by my older daughters during long car rides. So far, they absolutely love it. Design & Android By appearance, the Camelio tablet looks like most any other 7 inch tablet a 'grownup' would use. For kids, this is a pretty big deal, especially if they're the type of little humans that prefer your toys instead of theirs. While it's not as thin as some of the newest tablets available, it's definitely easier (for kids) to hold because of it. Simple, looks good, easy ports The body of the tablet feels lightweight, yet is put together fairly well. This is important when it comes to kids, who tend to be rough with belongings. Mine are, at least. The screen is plastic instead of glass, so the Vivitar Camelio tablet will collect permanent scratches over time. I definitely recommend an inexpensive screen protector, just to keep up appearances. The Vivitar Camelio tablet's Android OS is a slightly modified version of 4.1 Jellybean. While it provides most of the options you'd expect from an Android tablet, some are nonexistent. Just so, since less stuff for the kids to tweak means less instances they hand it over to me to 'fix.' The options not covered by parental controls are only basic adjustments. The parental controls are good at keeping the major settings and apps secure. No one needs random purchases off Google Play, right? But the scope and range is a bit limited. Any apps not covered by the pass code can be individually locked via locking apps. It's a good idea if your kids are older and/or clever. The parental controls don't provide any time-limiting options, however. The pages are fixed, so you can't remove some or add more. The launch page as well as the icons across the bottom of the screen are also permanent. So maybe everyone gets to have their own page for apps and games? Probably, although there is only so much storage space to go around. Screen Quality Sacrifices must be made in order to drop the price of consumer electronics. For the Vivitar Camelio tablet, the trade comes as lower screen quality. This isn't to say that the screen looks bad – it probably looks perfectly fine to most kids. To an adult, who has regularly used smartphones over the years,… Continue reading TechnologyTell Review: Vivitar Camelio Tablet The post TechnologyTell Review: Vivitar Camelio Tablet appeared first on GadgeTell. Sony's silence vis-à-vis Xperia Z2 and Z1 Compact US launches was clearly ominous from the get-go, but as the former is headed up north next month, things started to look up. Or so we liked to think, until Sony dropped the bomb. Talking to Engadget, the Japanese confirmed our worst fears: there are no plans to roll out the Z1 Compact stateside "in the near… Continue reading Sony Xperia Z2 on its way stateside only unlocked, Z1 Compact not coming at all The post Sony Xperia Z2 on its way stateside only unlocked, Z1 Compact not coming at all appeared first on GadgeTell. The night before a big trip can usually be described as an electronic cluster-bunch of outlet abuse that culminates in a blown fuse or power surge. Travel and gadgets go hand-in-hand now the same way travel and hitchhiking did before the world got weird. At least, that's what the Baby Boomers tell me. The idea of going overseas, or even over state lines, without every piece of technology we own is terrifying. Every carry-on bag that enters an airport terminal these days is full of gadgets and gear because nobody wants to be anything less than 007-esque. Here are the top 6 must-have gadgets for international travel: 1) Canon PowerShotS120: Unless you're a professional photographer on assignment, you're going to want to pack your photography power in a tiny amount of space. You may think you're going to take… Continue reading 6 Best Gadgets for International Travel The post 6 Best Gadgets for International Travel appeared first on GadgeTell. Many of us have gigabytes worth of data stored in various places all over the internet. We have albums worth of photos saved and shared on Facebook. Amazon and Google Play retain copies of digital music, books, and video purchases, which can be accessed remotely. And, of course, we can't forget comprehensive online storage sites such as Dropbox, Box, Skydrive, and many more. The accompanying mobile apps makes saving and moving data within the cloud… Continue reading Are we too trusting of online cloud storage?
