BlackBerry PlayBook 4G for Rogers, a look at the pricing and more

BlackBerry PlayBook 4G for Rogers, a look at the pricing

Earlier today we mentioned that Telus would be selling the BlackBerry PlayBook 4G for a contact free $549.99. And well, while we were expecting Rogers to come in with a similar price point, it looks like their contract-free price will be the exact same — $549.99. In addition, Rogers will have the PlayBook 4G available on a 1-year, 2-year and 3-year term. The pricing for these break down as follows;

  • $499.99 – 1 year
  • $449.99 – 2 year
  • $349.99 – 3 year

All things considered, it looks like the contract-free pricing will be the best option. Of course, even as we write and truly believe that statement, we realize there is a $200 difference between the no-term and the 3-year price. Otherwise, it looks like Rogers employees have been given strict orders to not display or sell the device until August 9th.

Coming a day after the rumors were calling for, Bell Mobility has officially released the Motorola RAZR V smartphone. In addition, you can also opt to shell out $399.95 and avoid the commitment entirely.

As far as the device goes, the Motorola RAZR V is running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and has goodies such as the SMARTACTIONS app which is said to allow your phone to “automatically recognize your usage patterns and make suggestions to personalize your experience, making everyday tasks easier.” Some of the SMARTACTIONS perks include Meeting Rule which silences your phone if you are in a meeting (according to your calendar) and Battery Extender which turns off features as your battery level drops.

Other hardware features include a 4.3-inch (960 x 540) ColorBoost display, dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage space, a microSD card slot, HSPA+ connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, a VGA quality front-facing camera and an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera with 1080p HD video capture.

Finally, the RAZR V has a scratch-resistant display, DuPont Kevlar fiber backing and a thickness of just 8.4mm.

Chameleon Launcher app now listed in Google Play, arrives as a beta and for Kickstarter backers only

We had been expecting the beta release of the Chameleon Launcher to arrive sometime in early-August. And well, it looks like this timeline has proven to be accurate. The good news here, Chameleon Launcher beta is now available in Google Play. The disappointing news, the app is only going to be available for those who backed the Kickstarter project. In fact, the first line of the Google Play listing notes that “this app is intended for Kickstarter and pre-order participants only.” Of course, that is not stopping those who fail to (or cannot) read to download the app and then leave a one-star review when it doesn’t work. That bit aside though, if you backed the Kickstarter project for Chameleon — fire up Google Play and get to installing. The current version is listed as 0.7.3. And for those who are curious as to how they limitation is made — after you download the app, it will verify your Google account to make sure you are on the approved Kickstarter beta list. Otherwise, those like myself who never made it to backing this project, the best we have to go on right now is that the “final Chameleon Launcher is coming soon.”

Comixology updated with new design and better Nexus 7 support

Comixology is the go-to app for many tablet users looking for quick access to comics, but it didn’t work properly on the Nexus 7. The 7-inch screen of the Nexus 7 was a bit too small to properly navigate Comixology’s interface, and the guided view mode would bug out when attempting to change pages. Fortunately, the newest update to Comixology fixes all of that.

If you own a Nexus 7 or another kind of 7-inch tablet, you’ll notice everything looks a little bigger. It’s easier to select the featured and my comics categories. The guided view also works as it’s intended. It’s probably still ideal for some people to read comics on a 10-inch display, but smaller screens in no way makes this app useless.

The full change log is below.

-Discover comics at much faster speeds
- Near instant launching
- Background downloading
- Improved "Instant Search"
- Separate "Purchases" area that displays all owned comics
- New series groupings in store and "My Comics"
- Buy or continue reading the next issue at the end of a comic

BlackBerry PlayBook 4G with Telus; available contract-free and priced at $549.99

RIM offered up an official release date for the BlackBerry PlayBook 4G tablet yesterday. And just to recap that, the tablet will be available first for those in Canada with a release date set for August 9th. In terms of carriers, RIM stated that the PlayBook 4G would be available with Rogers, Bell and Telus. As of now we have yet to hear from Rogers or Bell, however Telus has come forward with some pricing information.

"We are launching the 4G LTE Playbook next week. It will be available online and through our dealers. We are pricing it at $549.99."

In addition to shelling out your $550, you will need to grab a Telus compatible microSIM card, which will be given when you sign up for an LTE data plan. The nice part on that, given your are paying full retail, you will not be tied down with any long term commitments.

Aside from Telus, word on the interwebs has been suggesting that Rogers and Bell will also have the PlayBook 4G priced at $550. In addition, Rogers is expected to offer the tablet for $349.99 on a three-year agreement. Needless to say, we still need the official word from Rogers and Bell before we take that as final.

Google appears to have not gotten the approval to allow American Express within Google Wallet

Google Wallet fans recently received some good news, you can now use any credit card as opposed to having to use a Citi MasterCard. Needless to say, we suspect more than a few users updated the Wallet app and began adding credit cards and began amazing store clerks everywhere with their ability to make a payment with a smartphone or tablet. But while Google proudly touted that the updated Wallet app “supports all credit and debit cards from Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover” — there may be some issues with one of those four.

The issue seems to be with American Express. And at this point, we have yet to come across any reports of users not being able to add or use an American Express card within Wallet. But on that note, it seems that American Express may not have given their full and proper approval. In fact, a spokesperson from American Express reached out to TechCrunch and offered the following;

"Right now, American Express does not have an agreement with Google for our cards to be used in the Google mobile wallet."

In addition, the American Express spokesperson noted that they still need to make sure that Wallet is able to meet the standards they set for our Cardmembers in terms of “transparency and clarity about transaction detail.”

Otherwise, Google fired back stating that they “are in active discussions with American Express” and expect to be able to work as partners. Needless to say, as of this time you can use an American Express card within Google Wallet but we cannot say if that will be changing.

The new Outlook.com will not scan your emails to display ads

Along with Hotmail’s new interface, the snazzy-looking Outlook.com, Microsoft has changed another important aspect of how you get your webmail: they pledge to not scan your emails to show relevant ads. This perhaps comes after Google received some backlash because Gmail does autonomously scan email content to display relevant ads. We’ve all seen it. You get an email about flowers and you will most likely see an ad for 1800-Flowers.

While Google put some of the privacy-oriented folks concerns to rest after assuring them that its just algorithms that scan your email, Microsoft has taken a completely different approach to display ads: newsletters. Outlook.com has a neat feature that grays out newsletters, which most people ignore anyway. So, if you receive fashion related newsletters, you will probably see fashion-related ads on the right side of Outlook.com.

Microsoft has also shuffled divisions and departments around, so the new Outlook.com isn’t under the money-losing web division that controls Bing. Wired explains it best:

In another sign that Microsoft isn't looking to its revamped email service mainly as a platform for ads, the company said Outlook.com was not being overseen by its money-losing online services division, which includes Bing and MSN. Instead, Outlook.com's launch was announced by Chris Jones, the head of Microsoft's Windows Live division, which makes web apps for Windows. This comes just weeks after Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer came to San Francisco to unveil the new version of Office, which posted nearly $24 billion in sales during Microsoft's most recent fiscal year. Microsoft has deeply integrated the cloud into Office 2013, which will offer monthly subscription-based access. Microsoft is also looking for ways to turn SkyDrive and Skype into moneymakers. In that light, Outlook.com looks more like a gateway to selling software, not ads.

Have you check out the new Outlook.com? Its very clean and employs lots of whitespace, making Gmail look a bit date. You might actually like it and perhaps you’ll end up switching your webmail interface. You’ve been warned.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus users can now install Google Wallet — without any trickery

With nothing coming from Verizon Wireless or Google in terms of an official statement, it looks like those sporting a Verizon-branded Galaxy Nexus are now able to download and install Google Wallet. That being said, if you are sporting a Verizon Galaxy Nexus and have been itching to try out Google Wallet but have been avoiding it because you want to keep things stock and unrooted — now is the time to make the move. Just follow the via link below and send the Wallet app to your device. And remember, thanks to those recent changes you can now add any credit card as opposed to only a Citi MasterCard.

New Facebook stats: 83 million fake users

Facebook, the social networking giant, released the latest breakdown of what they consider to be fake users at thefirst quarterly earnings report as a public company. This is the numbers breakdown:

  • 4.8% duplicate accounts
  • 2.4% user-misclassified
  • 1.5% undesirable accounts
  • Total: 8.7% or about 83 million fake users

Under Facebook’s terms and conditions, people aren’t allowed to have more than one Facebook account, those are considered duplicate accounts. User misclassified refers to accounts for set up for businesses or pets, as those entities are supposed to set up pages instead of profiles. Undesirable accounts are those set up to spam.

Facebook boasts an impressive user base: 955 million active monthly, but dispute their huge numbers, their stock price keeps dropping. Facebook’s stock IPO price was set at $38 and it closed today at $20.04. In the end, if the social networking giant has less than 10% fake users, its still better than my email/spam average.
