T-Mobile Galaxy S III users have a maintenance style update ready and waiting

Those carrying a T-Mobile branded Galaxy S III — you have a software update ready and waiting. The update, which is nothing more than a maintenance update, is currently available by way of Samsung Kies and will also be rolling out over-the-air. Your Galaxy S III will remain at Android 4.0.4 after the update, however the software version will go to T999UVLH2. In terms of what has been taken care of — that is a short list which reads as follows;

  • Resolved the error, 'Enter MAC address’ after entering the correct MAC address in the Mobile HotSpot configuration page if the MAC address entered did not contain the colons (:) or spaces.
  • Resolved issue where the contents of a Home screen folder would be rearranged alphabetically after a reboot.
  • Resolved issue where the name does not populate when trying to add a contact with NameID information, you must manually add.

Otherwise, while not mentioned in the changelog, the folks over at TmoNews believe this update is removing the universal search option. Those looking to get the update over-the-air can sit back and wait for an update notification to arrive (the route we suggest) or navigate to Home -> Menu -> Settings -> About device -> Software update to get the process started manually. Starbucks will be dropping all BlackBerry support for the Mobile Card app as of August 28th

Starbucks may have stopped offering new downloads for their BlackBerry (Starbucks Card Mobile) app back in October of 2011. But as of the end of the month, they are taking things a step further — they will be dropping support entirely. Simply put, if you want to get Starbucks and pay for it using your BlackBerry — you will need to do so before August 28th. On that note, if needed, you can have any remaining balance transferred to a plastic card by visiting a Starbucks store.

GadgeTell Review: Blurex Ultra Slim Case for the Nexus 7

What is Being Reviewed?

Today we're reviewing the Blurex Ultra Slim Case for the Nexus 7. This is technically the third Nexus 7 case Blurex has released, and after trying all three, I'm convinced this case is the best. Better still, this case is being sold on Amazon for $14.99 before shipping. Let me go over the things I liked and did not like about the Blurex Ultra Slim case.

The Design

The Nexus 7 is a thin tablet. It also happens to be one of the device's best attributes. It's very comfortable to hold in one hand, and that's exactly how Google wants you to handle it. Blurex kept this in mind when creating this case. The case adds only a little more bulk to the Nexus 7. You can still easily slip the tablet and its case into a small bag, purse or even your pocket (if you have big pockets). Basically, if the Ultra Slim Case prevents the Nexus 7 from comfortably fitting into something it did before, chances are it was always a tight fit.

The thinness of the case also provides reasonable protection for the Nexus 7. I wouldn't go around dropping this thing off balconies, but it'll most certainly be protected from falling off the countertop. The front and back of the case also protects the Nexus 7 from getting scratched and nicked. All of the ports on the Nexus 7 (except for the pogo pins) are exposed for easy access.

The Ultra Slim Case also feels great to hold. It's made from synthetic leather and looks more expensive than it is. Its interior is lined with microfiber material that acts as a soft pillow for when the Nexus 7 is sleeping.

The Features

The first feature of the Blurex Ultra Slim Case I want to address is the automatic on/off functionality. The Nexus 7 has magnets on the inside that turns the display on and off whenever it comes within close proximity of another magnet. This case takes full advantage of that feature. It has always worked perfectly and can actually extend the battery life of the Nexus 7.

The tablet is held in place by six clamps that are like claws. Each of these clamps easily fit around the silver plastic lining of the Nexus 7. None of the clamps come into contact with the device's bezel. In the time I've been using it, the clamps have not loosened their grip on the Nexus 7. I prefer the clamps to the velcro Blurex used in its previous Nexus 7 case because I believe the velcro will wear out faster than the synthetic leather clamps.

The Blurex Ultra Slim Case can also be transformed into a stand for when the Nexus 7 is in landscape mode. You have to disconnect the upper and lower left clamps in order to use this feature. I'm not particularly fond of this extra step because I want to fiddle with the clamps as little as possible for the sake of the case's longevity. However, once that step is done, you can position the tablet at three different angles using the recessed grooves that are built into the case. The tablet isn't rock solid when placed in those grooves, but it will remain sturdy as long as you don't mess around with it too much.

When held in portrait mode, the Blurex Ultra Slim Case can fold around the back of the Nexus 7. However, if you're left-handed like me, the tablet will slide around. To remedy this, Blurex attached an elastic band to the interior of the case. The band can be wrapped around the upper and lower right clamps to hold the Nexus 7 firmly in place. While the band doesn't get in the way of the screen, I would like to see Blurex figure out a way to remove the band entirely. This shouldn't be an issue if you are right-handed. You have far more control over the case when it's gripped from the right side.

Blurex also included a hand strap for portrait mode users. The strap sits flush with the interior of the case, and is barely noticeable. I found it to be very useful when I used the Nexus 7 while lying down, or during extended sessions. It helps remove hand strain that can build up over time if you don't put the tablet down.

Conclusion

The Blurex Ultra Slim Case for the Nexus 7 is easily worth more than what Blurex is charging for it. There’s very little I don’t like about this case. It’s simple, made of quality materials and doesn’t restrict the Nexus 7 in any way. I’ve seen other cases that are twice as expensive and perform the same functions as this one. Trust me, this case is a winner.

Asus TF500T tablet makes the required FCC appearance, reveals few details in the process

It looks like an unannounced Asus tablet has recently been discovered in an FCC filing. The tablet bears the name of TF500T, which will presumably come available as a Transformer Pad and running Android. But on that note, the FCC filing revealed very little in terms of actual details — hence the speculation. What we can tell you is that the device has Wi-Fi, a microphone and HDMI. In other words, very little.

Another Galaxy Note 2 image surfaces, this one is a fan mock-up

It looks like another Galaxy Note 2 image has surfaced, though, we are not all that certain this image is different from the one that made the rounds earlier this morning. You see, this image has come from Twitter user Daniel UY and he seems to have some doubts about the earlier image.

First things first though, this latest, which you can see below appears to be much more believable. Well, more believable in the fact that it is fairly clear. This image is showing both the front and back of the device. It also has the Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2012 advertisement posted on the face. Of course, while those statements were true, this image is nothing more than a fan mock-up.

Touching back on the doubts regarding the earlier image. Daniel noted that image, the one originally posted on KnowYourMobile was an “edit image of my [his] mockup..And also printed.” And to think, all of this madness for a handset that the tech press has not even been all that pumped about — remember all those people making fun of the phablet. Maybe there is more to the Galaxy Note than people want to admit.

Bottom line here, this just goes to show — you cannot believe everything you see on the interwebs.

Rogers Galaxy S III for $98 on a three-year agreement, by way of Walmart

With no word coming from the carrier just yet, it looks like the Rogers Galaxy S III will soon be getting a price cut. The details are coming by way of a leaked Walmart sales flyer which is showing a price of just $98. And in addition to a $60 savings as compared to shopping direct with Rogers, those who make the purchase by way of Walmart will also get a $25 gift card. Finally, not that we expect anyone to think otherwise, but the $98 price is on a three-year agreement.

Is this the Galaxy Note 2? [Image]

We have been seeing leaked details dealing with the Galaxy Note 2 for some time now. And well, it looks like another [purported] Galaxy Note 2 image has surfaced. The pic is coming by way of the folks over at Know Your Mobile who feel this “image bears more than a passing resemblance to the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 with its similar colouring and chic silver edging.” We do sort of have to agree on that. On the positive agreeing side, this would make sense for Samsung in terms of branding and focusing on a line of Note devices. And for lack of a better explanation, similar to what Apple has done with the iPad and the iPhone — not the same, but clearly similar and from the same company. But on the flip side of this, sometimes when things appear to be lining up so nicely, we start to second guess. Otherwise, previous rumors have suggested that the Galaxy Note 2 will launch with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and with hardware specs to include a 5.5-inch display, quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM.

Sony begins rolling out Android 4.0 ICS for Xperia P smartphone users

Some good news for those rocking a Sony Xperia P smartphone — you have an update on the way. And yes, it is an update that is bringing a new dessert. Sony has announced the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Xperia P. The update process has officially begun as of today and according to Sony, it will continue rolling out “over the next few weeks in markets globally.” Needless to say, that means the update may or may not actually be available for you as of today. In fact, further details note that “direct availability in the phone may vary across different markets and carriers.” Rest assured though, if you are carrying an Xperia P smartphone — the update is coming. As for what the update will offer, the goodies break down as follows;

  • New ways to experience your media with new media applications – "WALKMAN", "Album" and "Movies"
  • Extended standby mode, increasing standby time by up to four times (depending on user-profile and data consumption)
  • Lock screen with improved functionality
  • Resizable widgets for improved personalization
  • Improved control of your mobile data consumption
  • Recent Apps button for a clear overview of your applications

Finally, Sony also mentioned that the Xperia U, Xperia sola and Xperia go will be the next three devices to get an update. Sadly though, nothing specific as to when.

WWE releases a brand new app for iOS and Android

The WWE has been seriously stepping up its social media presence over the past several months. In addition to promoting the company’s Twitter and Facebook feeds during broadcasts and investing in Tout, the WWE also released a new connected app for iOS and Android today. 

I understand professional wrestling isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but the WWE app is actually quite nice. The main sections of the app are broken down into sections that are dedicated to the Raw and Smackdown brands. From there, fans can look at the latest videos, photos and read the latest tweets from other fans that used the Raw hashtag.

Another major section of the app gives individual attention for superstars of the past and present. Each superstar page shows their latest highlights, updates from their Facebook and Twitter feeds and also includes a timeline for their career milestones. You can also follow them on social networks right from the app.

Other features include an even calender, Twitter updates from fans in your area and a link to the WWE Shop.

WWE obviously put a considerable amount of effort into this app. Wrestling fans won’t be disappointed.

Discover gets friendly with Google Wallet

It was a few weeks back when Google announced that you could add any and all credit and debit cards into Google Wallet. But despite being able to enter and use your Discover card, it looks like the two have just gotten a bit friendlier. That is, Google Wallet and Discover. The details are coming by way of the official Google Commerce Blog where they note that Discover has become the first of the card issuers to take advantage of the “Save to Wallet API for Payment Cards.” As to what that means for the average user — it will now be even easier to enter your Discover card details in your Google Wallet account. Well, that is provided you have yet to do that. Anyway, this API (being used by Discover) means you will be enter your account information without having to look up and type in your card number. You will be able to set up your Discover card in Google Wallet by simply logging into your Discover account. The process is as follows;

To save your Discover Card to Google Wallet, just follow these short steps:
1. Visit discover.com/googlewallet and sign into your Discover account
2. Click "Add Your Card"
3. Sign into your Google Account

Finally, while Discover is the first (and currently the only) card issuer to take advantage of the API, Google noted that they are currently “working with credit and debit card issuers” which seems to imply that others may begin using it in the future.
