In case featurephones are your preferred cell phone of choice, then you will be happy to know that Verizon launched the successor to the Samsung Intensity II earlier today. Available online immediately, the Samsung Intensity III commands a $79.99 price tag after a $50 MIR. The QWERTY Slider device will launch in-store in the coming weeks. In terms of specs and features, the Intensity III sports a 2.4 inch QVGA display, social networking apps, 2MP rear facing camera, rugged exterior casing to protect against sand, dust, and shock, VZ Navigator, Bluetooth, and microSD memory expansion. Again, the Samsung Intensity III for Verizon Wireless is available immediately for $79.99 on a two year contract, but will not be available for in-store purchase for another couple of weeks. Facebook received a lot of negative press lately over how it implemented its new email system. Facebook’s methods ended up causing a lot of people to miss emails that they would have otherwise received. Facebook now says those emails aren’t lost. They’re just put in a place you probably never knew existed. The short version is Facebook users were recently given a @facebook.com email address that showed up on their profile as their default email address. When the Facebook smartphone app synced contacts, it replaced every existing email address with a Facebook email address that corresponded with specific individuals. This led some people to send emails without knowing they were being redirected to Facebook. In some instances, the emails never made it to the main Facebook messages folder. Facebook told ReadWriteWeb the missing emails are likely in a messages folder labeled ”other”. You’ve probably never paid any attention to this option. It’s located on the left panel after clicking on messages. Here is the rather confusing explanation Facebook spokesperson Meredith Chin gave to ReadWriteWeb. "By default, messages from friends or friends of friends go into your Inbox. Everything else goes to your Other folder.” That is likely where the messages are being sent from other people’s emails. Even if that person is friends with them on Facebook, if the friend doesn’t have that email on their Facebook account, the message could end up in the Other folder."
Did you catch all that? Good. Facebook is actively trying to figure out how to address the syncing issue with their apps. Via [ReadWriteWeb]
Google originally announced the Nexus 7 tablet last week during I/O and it looks like a few accessories have since shown up. The Google Play store is currently listing a spare charger and a folding cover. The charger is just what one would expect and includes a USB cable and a wall outlet. The charger is priced at $24.99 and currently available for sale with an expected ship time of 2-3 weeks. The Nexus 7 cover is priced at $19.99 and at the moment, noted as being “coming soon.” You cannot yet place an order for the cover, however you can part with your email address in exchange for an email alert when it comes available. The cover is compatible with the 8GB and 16GB model and is described as being a “soft, lightweight, matte-finish travel case.” The nice part here, the case covers the back, has a folding cover over the front and open access for the ports. The one drawback, the case will addd an extra 4.7 ounces to the weight of the tablet (which sans cover weighs 340 grams or 11.99 ounces). Of course, that is probably a small consideration for keeping you shiny new Nexus 7 looking shiny and new. Via [Google Play, Nexus 7 cover] and [Google Play, Nexus 7 charger]
While we aren’t entirely sure that this hidden easter egg will end up justifying the price of the Nexus Q, is certainly does add a bit more fun to the recently announced device. It seems Google has continued on their easter egg hiding tradition and included a Magic 8 Ball mode on the media streamer. The easter egg was documented by Adrian Perez over on Google+ who notes that revealing the Magic 8 Ball is easy enough, just tap the Nexus Q picture in the Nexus Q app. According to Perez, the Nexus Q is able to “give Magic 8 Ball type answers” however it is “not very good at conversation.” Anyway, those who were at Google I/O and picked one of these up, you can begin playing now — otherwise, it looks like everyone else will have to bookmark and save these details to begin playing when the media streamer begins shipping in mid-July. One of the perks of buying a Nexus device is in knowing that updates should come available first, however in the case of the Nexus 7 tablet — it also means you have the full factory image ROM available. And nicely done on the part of Google as they have offered this bit before most of us will even get hands on with the device. As to what this means or who should be excited. Well, this means that should you decide to flash another ROM on your Nexus 7 — you will easily be able to get back to the default set-up. It also means that developers will be able to create something different. Say, an alternate Nexus 7 ROM. Of course, nothing on that front just yet. That all being said, the ROM image, which is Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (JRN84D), is available directly from the Google Developers website and measures in at just about 250MB in size. The new MacBook Pro with Retina Display and latest-generation MacBook Air notebooks have only been available for a short time, however that has not stopped big box retailer Best Buy from offering them for a discount. In terms of the MBA, this one has discounts up to $75, which for an Apple product — is rather nice. What this actually means, you can score an 11.6-inch MBA with 4GB of RAM and a 64GB SSD for $949. On the MBP with Retina Display side, this one has a bit higher discount — up to $140. This translates to being able to grab a 15.4-inch model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage for $2,089. Of course, as The Verge points out, these models can still be found cheaper, that is, if you are eligible for the Apple student discount. Otherwise for all else, it seems a bit nicer than buying direct from Apple. Via [Best Buy] and [The Verge]
I am pretty sure that at least some of us have been upset enough with our wireless carrier that we would have liked to go in and trash the store and make a statement. Of course, the rational side would keep just about everyone from actually acting upon that. But it seems that one upset customer in Manchester, England was not able to control his urge. And as a result, we get to watch a 3 minute and 44 second video showing how he tears the store apart. You get to see him ripping phones and displays off the wall and even cover the store in not one, but two fire extinguishers. Perhaps the funniest part, he actually looked like he was in good spirits while be arrested. It seemed as if he was smiling and joking as the police officers put on the silver bracelets.

We had learned back in late-March that MOG was being acquired by Beats Audio, and well, despite that having been confirmed back at that point, it looks like the companies have both recently (re)confirmed the deal. Of course, they have yet to disclose the points that many are probably wondering about — the terms, the pricing and what we will see from a user perspective. That being said, it looks like we are going to have to sit back and wait for some additional details. Or more to the point, to see what Beats Audio has in mind for MOG. Though, on that note, given the MOG service offers fairly high streaming (at 320 kbps), it certainly seems like the best match. Otherwise, MOG CEO David Hyman did offer this teaser; “Time will tell exactly how we integrate our products and services,” Hyman said. “MOG and Beats have a shared vision of providing a premium sound experience to listeners and increasing the emotional connection they have with music so building on the solid foundation we’ve created, the possibilities around future innovation are endless.”

A beta version of VLC has recently come available for Android users, though, before anyone gets super excited — remember this is a beta release. In fact, aside from the app being listed as VLC Beta (NEON version), the app description clearly notes that this is intended for power users and hackers and is not stable. And in addition, it is described as being “slower” than the final version will be. Simply put, if you are a regular user just waiting for VLC to come available for Android, you may want to hold off for a more stable release. The app is currently sitting at version 0.0.1 and comes with the requirement of Android 2.1 or later for use. Another requirement notes that this will only run on devices with a CPU ARMv7. And if for some reason you are unsure if that means your handset, it is probably better to hold off. For those who are curious, or for those who are feeling brave and want to get this installed — here is the feature set. - VLC for Android™ plays most local video and audio files, as well as network streams, like the desktop version of VLC.
- VLC for Android has a media library for audio and video files, and allows to browse folders directly.
- VLC has support for multi-track audio and subtitles. It supports auto-rotation, aspect-ratio adjustements and gestures to control volume.
- It also includes a widget for audio control, supports audio headsets control, covert art and a complete audio media library.
And lastly, in addition to being able to download the app from the below link, there is also a list of missing features that you may want to check out. Via [Google Play]
A bit of excitement from the X-Games this weekend as Team Hot Wheels set a Guinness World Record by successfully completing the double vertical loop. And as if that does not sound scary enough to do in a car — that was a six-story double vertical loop. The record was set by Hot Wheels drivers Tanner Foust and Greg Tracy who started off almost side-by-side and each got up to 52 miles per hour where they were then subject to 7Gs of force as they took the loops. And taking that a step further, as if driving a loop was not enough, they each finished off by jumping the cars over to another landing platform. Seriously cool stuff, you should check the above video… Via [YouTube] and [SlashGear] | |
