Sony has come forward with a bit of detail in terms of the Xperia Ion release for those in Canada. Simply put, they have announced the upcoming release and have stated that the handset will be available through various Canadian wireless carriers and authorized national retailers beginning in July. In other words, Sony has confirmed the handset is coming, however it looks like this is another case of having to wait for the carriers to come forward with individual announcements. Otherwise, the Xperia Ion will have support for 4G LTE connectivity and bring features to include a 4.6-inch HD Reality display with Mobile Bravia Engine (at 1280 x 720), a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 16GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot and a 12 megapixel rear facing camera with Sony Exmor R for mobile which is said to allow for “fast capture to go from sleep to snap in just over a second.” Lastly, the Xperia Ion will launch with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, however there is already a promise of an upgrade to Android 4.0 ICS at a yet-to-be-specified time. Navigon has released a new update in terms of the iPhone navigation app. The app has gone up to version 2.1 and brings a few new features as well as limited time discounts for both existing users looking for in-app purchases and for new users looking to buy the app for the first time. Beginning first with the discounts. These prices will be available until July 16th and break down as follows; - NAVIGON USA: $29.99 instead of $49.99

Pricing aside though, here is what you can expect in terms of new features. Version 2.1 of the Navigon iPhone navigation app include Google Street View, Navigon Cockpit (an in-app purchase) and manual route blocking. Some of the other goodies include enhanced iPad retina display graphics, an optimized map manager interface with new controls for downloading and deleting maps and performance enhancements. Touching a bit further on the performance enhancements and we learn the following; “In response to customer feedback, we improved the start-up time and map rendering performance of the NAVIGON app. Zooming and panning in the map view is now faster as well.”
Finally, here is what Navigon have to say about the three main goodies; - Google Street View When using in-car navigation, it can sometimes be challenging to find the right building at your destination, especially if one can’t recognize the house number without leaving the car. The new Google Street View function of the NAVIGON app provides users a street-level image of their destination before starting a route, helping, for example, to identify a specific building upon arrival. Users can even look at a full screen 360° view to get a better understanding of their destination’s surrounding. Shortly before arriving at the destination, the Google Street View image slides in again, making it easier to identify the correct location.
- NAVIGON Cockpit A new Cockpit function displays relevant driving data in real time on a cockpit-like screen. Captured data includes gForce (current and maximum value), speed, horizontal and vertical position, and an adjustable speed and altitude graph. Drivers can use this information to see a snapshot of their driving habits. Also included is a dedicated off-road screen with compass and altitude information for off-road driving. NAVIGON Cockpit is available as an in app purchase for $5.99.
- Manual Route Blocking The new and easy to use manual route blocking function allows users to view their route on a map and block certain sections of it by simply tapping them. The app will then automatically calculate an alternative route. This feature is available in route planning mode and during navigation and allows users to better customize their route according to their own preferences. This is especially helpful when navigating in familiar territory, since users can avoid going through a certain city or taking a highway they’d like to navigate around.

The Google Places app on the iPhone as recently been updated. The update is available in the expected location, the iOS App Store, however it does have a new name and app icon which may look a slight bit confusing at first glance. The new icon can be seen here in the post and the name is now Google+ Local. The app has gone up to version 1.4 and brings a few new features including Zagat and voice search. The change log reads as follows; - With Google+ Local you can see reviews from your friends, decide where to go with Zagat’s summaries of places and review your favorite places.
- Ability to search via Voice Search. Simply tap the microphone and speak your query.
- Improved UI for searching for places that aren’t nearby.
- Switched to using OAuth2 login for improved security.

At this point we are fairly certain that few people should be surprised to see a smartphone selling for less money with a third-party retailer as opposed to direct with the carrier, but at the same time — it is sort of refreshing to see more and more options available. If you happen to be using Sparrow on a shiny new MacBook Pro with a Retina Display, you may want to grab the latest update. And just to clarify — this update does bring proper support for the Retina Display. Some other goodies that come along with this latest update include support for Mountain Lion and Notification Center along with the ability to Send & Archive in Quick Reply, always expand messages and always show the “i” section. Lastly, this update brings Sparrow for Mac up to version 1.6.2 and so far, this release is available by way of the Sparrow website as opposed to the Mac App Store. We have seen more than a few software updates for the Motorola MOTOACTV fitness watch over the past few months — to the point of this watch being one of the most frequently updated products we can remember in recent times. That thought aside though, the latest update has been detailed by the folks at Motorola however we have yet to hear of any reports of it being received by users. The update is coming as 7.10 and it will be available for the 8GB and 16GB models of the watch. More specifically, the update will arrive as the 8GB MA 1.7.10 N8 / MA 1.7.10 E8 and the 16GB MA 1.7.10 N16. In terms of what one can expect — a bunch of bug fixes. The full list of fixes includes the following; - Improve Scorecard when playing only Back 9 on a course.
- Enhance manual PAR information entry.
- Fix “Application Force Close” in Workout and Notifications.
- Notifications improved to handle Unread Messages.

We recently mentioned that the HTC One V was going to be coming available with several regional based carriers here in the US, and well, one of those carriers have since stepped up with some release details. Specifically speaking, that carrier is US Cellular and they have offered up the price and the release date. In short, the HTC One V will be available with US Cellular on July 6th. The price will be $129.99. Though, just to make it clear, that $129.99 price point comes along with a two-year agreement and after a $100 mail-in rebate.  
HTC has announced plans to bring the One V smartphone to a few additional US carriers, all regional based. The newly announced carriers include US Cellular and Virgin Mobile. Also included in this release is the Associated Carrier Group (ACG) which is made up of twenty-seven Member Carriers based in various markets throughout the US. As far as specific pricing and availability goes, that looks like we are going to be waiting and looking for announcements from the individual carriers. HTC did note that the One V would be “hitting their shelves this summer” so based on that we suspect we will be learning more sooner rather than later. Otherwise, the HTC One V will bring features to include a 3.7-inch Super LCD touchscreen display, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 processor, 5 megapixel rear facing camera with an f/2.0 lens and back illuminated sensor and Android 4.0 ICS with HTC Sense 4. Most devices running Android 4.0 today are mid to high-end, as Ice Cream Sandwich has yet to truly penetrate the low-range market for smartphones. However, according to a recent leak of an unknown Samsung device, ICS could be launching on a low-range and affordable device near you. The Samsung GT-B5330 boasts a portrait QWERTY keyboard, 3G connectivity, a low resolution touch screen, and a 850MHz processor.
