Some interesting developments lately in terms of Thunderbird. It seems as if Mozilla has decided that the email app has reached its peak. Well, sort of. You see, the folks over at Mozilla have recently asked a question. One that makes us wonder just how much development time and innovation will be going into future work on Thunderbird. The details are coming from the Lizard Wrangling blog where is notes that; “Thunderbird provides an open-source, cross-platform email alternative for those of us who still use stand-alone email clients (and I am one). It's trust-worthy, it's under your control, and it's built to reflect the Mozilla mission. Once again we've been asking the question: is Thunderbird a likely source of innovation and of leadership in today's Internet life? Or is Thunderbird already pretty much what its users want and mostly needs some on-going maintenance?”
And for good and bad, the Mozilla team seems to be leading to the side of stability. Further details note that “much” of Mozilla’s leadership team have decided that “on-going stability is the most important thing” and that the “continued innovation in Thunderbird is not a priority.” Sounds pretty bad if you ask us. But then again, it does not look like Thunderbird is being killed off, just put on a back-burner of sorts. The future is going to go like this (at least for now) — Mozilla will continue to provide security updates by way of an Extended Support Release process. Furthermore, they are also going to maintain mechanisms for the Thunderbird community to organize for further development. That being said, those interested in helping can check out the Thunderbird development forums to get involved. Via [Lizard Wrangling] and [TechCrunch]
It looks like yet another cloud service has launched, though this one is not exactly an an offering designed to compete with the likes of Dropbox. The latest is from RapidShare and is called RapidDrive. Or more specifically, RapidDrive Beta. The service is described as being “a new file management tool” and will integrate “seamlessly” with Windows. And by that, it looks like RapidDrive Beta will be managed using the Windows Explorer. That alone should make it a nice offering for those super comfortable with Windows, or for those in business who simply want to integrate something familiar into their workplace to avoid additional employee training. Another perk of the Windows Explorer integration means that users will be able to manage and upload files directly from other programs (such as Word and Excel). In terms of getting access and beginning to use the RapidDrive Beta, this has been made available for RapidPro customers and it will work with Windows XP, Vista and 7. It was noted that versions for other operating systems are planned, however a timeframe for the release was not offered. On the flip side though, a final non-beta release of RapidDrive for Windows is expected to be available sometime in the early parts of September. Via [BGR]
The information received thus far is on the light side, however it is looking like Rogers will be launching the HTC Desire C at some point in the not to distant future. As for qualifying the light side comment, the details have come by way of the folks over at MobileSyrup who received word that Rogers will soon be stocking cases for the handset and well, as was noted, “where there's cases there's handsets.” Sounds like a more than fair bet at least. The timing would also be in-line with a back-to-school offering. That would make sense mainly because the Desire C is not a super high-end device. Well, actually it is closer to a low-end device. As for the specs, the handset sports a 3.5-inch HVGA (480 x 320) touchscreen, 600MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, a 1230 mAh battery and a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera. Finally, the handset is running Android 4.0.3 ICS with the Sense user interface. Via [MobileSyrup]
Samsung has recently announced the Canadian availability of two additional Android tablets, the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. Both models are available as of this posting and have arrived as Wi-Fi only devices with prices beginning at $249 (7.0) and $349 (10.1). These tablets are both running Android 4.0 ICS and share common features including a dual-core 1GHz processor, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 3.0, microSD card slot and a 3 megapixel auto-focus camera with full HD 1080p video recording. Additionally, the 7.0 model has 8GB of internal storage with a 4000 mAh battery and the 10.1 model has 16GB of internal storage and a 7000 mAh battery. With that, those who happen to be in Canada and find themselves interested in checking out either model, they can be found from “select retailers nationwide.” In other words, you should be able to easily find one of these at you local bog box retailer without all that much trouble.
