Microsoft Office for iOS and Android coming in November? and more

Microsoft Office for iOS and Android coming in November?

According to BGR’s trustworthy source, the Microsoft Office Suite is said to be launching for the iPad and Android tablets.  Moreover, the other iOS and Android devices are said to be eligible to run the well-known Office software.  Apparently, the source has already seen the iPad run Microsoft Office and the splash screen says Microsoft Office 2010 for iOS, which seems to imply that it will launch on the iPhone and iPod Touch as well.

November is said to be the target launch date for the iOS and Android version, but pricing of the software is not yet available.  While there are many viable alternatives to Microsoft Office already present in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store, I imagine many users would still want the Office Suite assuming the price is reasonable.

Stay tuned for more rumors and leaks regarding Microsoft Office as we approach November.

GadgeTell Review: Universal USB Power Dock Pro Flex by Bracketron

What is being reviewed?

Up for review today is the Universal USB Power Dock Pro Flex by Bracketron. This car charger/mount features an adjustable device holder, a flexible neck, USB port for charging and plugs into the 12V port in your car. This car charger/mount is currently available from Bracketron and is selling for $34.95.

Disclaimer: The Universal USB Power Dock Pro Flex car charger/mount was provided to GadgeTell by Bracketron for the purpose of this review.

My thoughts

Some of the finer points for this particular car mount include the following; the mount works with the 12V port in your car, the device holder is universal and easily adjustable, the flexible neck is sturdy feeling yet easy to move around, the USB port is high output meaning 5V, 1.5A, it will work with any USB cable you already have for your device (such as the iPhone USB to dock connector cable), it ships with a micro USB to USB cable and according to the product description — the mount is made from a durable, molded high impact plastic construction with soft touch finish.

My immediate concern when checking out this mount/charger is the location of the 12V jack in my car. While fairly accesible, it does have an overhang above it and therefor requires a rather flexible neck. The other issue that I tend to find with these types of setups, they wiggle around and lose their position. Granted this touches on my OCD a bit, but once I find a spot that I like, I want it to stay there. Needless to say, despite how flexible and easy to adjust the neck is — the mount stayed as I adjusted it. That is not to say it does not wiggle at all, but it has not fallen over at all. For that I am happy.

I have been using this car mount/charger for a few weeks now and I have to say that I am impressed. Not only did it manage to fit in the tight space that my car requires but it was able to hold that position. It is also simple as could be to insert and remove your phone without messing up the position. The portion that holds your smartphone is easily adjustable and should fit a wide variety of devices with ease.

The bottom line

I would say this, if you regularly use your phone in your car (such as for music or navigation) this is a good option to consider. The mount/charger sells for $34.95 which may not be the cheapest around, however it is far from the most expensive around. Simply put, a purchase would be a well spent $35 and one that I would recommend.

Samsung Chromebox pricing revealed, is expected to debut at $329.99

Samsung was chatting up their Chrome OS running Chromebox computer during CES, however since that point we have seen and heard very little. But on that note, it looks like TigerDirect has accidentally revealed some details. And in this case, the details have since been removed from their site so we do mean accidentally. Either way though, the details from Tiger Direct include some specs, a price and a possible disappointment.

Beginning first with the price. The Samsung Chromebox is showing a $329.99 price with Tiger Direct. In terms of those specs, those include 16GB of SSD storage, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a dual-core 1.9GHz Celeron B840 processor. And lastly, as to that disappointing part — the Tiger Direct listing seems to imply that the $329.99 purchase price is for the computer and not including any keyboard and mouse. And sure, those can easily be purchased on the side but during CES, Samsung was showing the Chromebox with a rather nice looking wireless keyboard and wireless mouse.

That being said, maybe once the Samsung Chromebox actually comes available we will see two listings — one at $329.99 for the computer only and one a bit more that includes the computer along with a keyboard and mouse.

Facebook has released another iOS app, Facebook Pages Manager for the iPhone

Those using the Facebook app on an iPhone have likely seen a new app being mentioned. The app is being shown in your news feed and should be nice for those who manage any Pages. The app is called Facebook Pages Manager and can be found in the iOS App Store. This app, as the name implies, will allow you to manage your Facebook Pages.

The app is currently sitting at version 1.0, is available for free and requires iOS 4.2 or later for use. We should also point out, the Facebook Pages Manager app is not a universal app, which means that while it will run on the iPad — it has been designed for the smaller screen of the iPhone and iPod touch.

Otherwise, the features of the Facebook Pages Manager app include the following;

Pages Manager helps admins connect with their audience and keep up with activity on multiple Pages, all in one place.

  • Post new updates and photos as your Page
  • Get notified about new activity on your Page when it happens, no matter where you are
  • Respond, post and comment as your Page while you're on-the-go
  • Manage all your Facebook Pages from one app
  • View your latest Page Insights

Amazon Wireless is now selling the Nokia Lumia 900 for as low allow as $9.99

We have seen some good deals on the AT&T compatible Lumia 900 up until this point and it looks like Amazon Wireless currently has another available. This latest offer has the handset priced as low as $9.99. That price is for current customers that are eligible for an upgrade. New customers (and those looking to add another line to an existing family account) will have to pay a bit more, a still inexpensive $39.99. And of course, all of those offers assume a two-year service agreement with AT&T. Regardless though, both of these prices are much nicer as compared tot he $99.99 that you would pay direct with AT&T. Finally, those ordering the handset through Amazon Wireless can also expect to get free two-day shipping.

US Cellular gets a bit friendlier with the Amazon Appstore

It looks like US Cellular has recently become a little closer to the Amazon Appstore. In fact, the carrier has announced a new “customized application menu in the Amazon Appstore.” This new menu will be available for US Cellular users with an Android smartphone and is essentially a curated app menu.

Simply put, US Cellular customers will now see a US Cellular tab when they launch the Amazon Appstore on their device. This tab will offer apps that have been pre-selected and approved by US Cellular. Of course, aside from that tab, you can still browse and access the rest of the Amazon Appstore without issue.

According to a statement coming from Edward Perez who is the vice president of marketing and sales operations at U.S. Cellular;

"The U.S. Cellular menu in the Amazon Appstore is a great way for our customers to discover new apps that are practical and fun,"

Needless to say, we suspect that many of the geeks will probably not find much benefit here. But on the flip side, this could be nice for the person who is not quite so geeky. Maybe say, the first time smartphone or first time Android user. This could actually be a great way for them to discover new apps considering without sections like this, even popular apps such as Facebook tend to get lost and are at times difficult to find by searching.

Samsung looks to be adding an S Pen slot on the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet

Samsung had been showing off the 10.1 inch Galaxy Note during Mobile World Congress and during that time they were pushing the S Pen stylus support. Except the catch here, while the original phablet sized Galaxy Note has a nice little slot where you can tuck your S Pen in for safe keeping, the larger Galaxy Note 10.1 had no such slot. At the time Samsung was pushing a pen holder case that you could buy as a separate accessory and carry around, which probably sounded pretty bad — even for those who are into the stylus. Thankfully though, it looks like Samsung has found a way to add an S Pen slot on the Galaxy Note 10.1. Well, it looks like they have based on these new images anyway. The images come by way of the German language Tablet Community site and show a nice looking Galaxy Note 10.1 — complete with a slot to keep your S Pen. Now the question comes, will people actually remove and use the pen or will it end up sitting in said slot?
