Announced earlier in Canada through Bell Mobility, HTC’s budget-friendly smartphone from the HTC One series is expected to hit the US market this summer. We’re talking about the HTC One V. Unfortunately, no word has been said about which US carriers are going to take said device. But there’s a big chance that not just one, but a few carriers will be supporting the smartphone. As a reminder, the HTC One V, aside from being a budget-friendly smartphone features a 5MP camera with 720p HD and video capture, Beats Audio integration, 3.7-inch WVGA Super LCD and 1GHz Qualcomm single-core processor. If you’ve been wanting to get one of the HTC One series phone but find the high-end models too expensive, the HTC One V may be your best choice. Via [Phonearena] Just as we reported last month, Sprint has just made the HTC EVO 4G LTE available for pre-order right now. The device’s official product page is showing a regular price of $549.99 but if you sign-up for a two-year service contract that price will become $199.99. Sprint is keeping the actual release date of this phone quiet, so it will be best to get in line as early as possible to assure yourself of a unit once the device becomes available. That is of course, if you’re really interested in getting this pretty capable Android smartphone. As a review, the HTC EVO 4G LTE features a nice camera that lets you capture panoramic scenes or take still photos while shooting video clips. In addition, the device is also integrated with Beats Audio. Completing the devices’ key features are a 4.7-inch touchscreen display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, dual-core processor, improved battery life, and a kickstand. Via [Sprint] Expect Penultimate, one of the iPad’s best-selling apps of all time to have more and more integrated note-taking features as it has just been acquired by Evernote. In case you’re not aware, Evernote happens to have an iPad note-taking app that is widely used as well. So, this acquisition, according to Evernote will have the app expanding its handwriting capabilities. While for Penultimate, it will become available on more platforms and devices. For those who are not familiar with Penultimate, it’s a pretty sleek app that is designed to mimic a physical notebook. It lets you use a finger or stylus for taking down notes wherever you like. It also lets you choose from a variety of paper types, ink colors and line thickness. Notes you’ve taken using Penultimate can also be saved directly to Evernote. And with the merger of the two, we expect this feature to be improved as Penultimate will certainly adapt most of Evernote’s features. Penultimate is available from the App Store for $0.99, while Evernote if you haven’t downloaded it yet is freely available. Via [Evernote]
What is being reviewed?Up for review today is the Brookstone Pocket Project for iPhone 4/4S. The pocket projector is selling for $229.99 and is currently available by way of the Brookstone website. Disclaimer: The Pocket Project for iPhone 4/4S was provided to GadgeTell by Brookstone for the purpose of this review.
My thoughtsAn iPhone projector is not something that I really thought that I would use, much less enjoy using. That is not to say I could not think of a half-a-dozen uses, it is just that I could not think of any uses that would fit in my life. But that being said, the folks at Brookstone recently had me take a look at a few products. I already reviewed the Big Blue Live Bluetooth speaker and well, the Brookstone Pocket Projector for iPhone 4 came along with. That being said, the projector sounded cool enough on paper. After all, the spec sheet touts goodies such as a super-bright 15-lumen projector lamp, a projected image of up to 50-inches with a resolution of 640 x 360, a built-in 2100 mAh battery that powers the projector and also doubles as an external battery for your iPhone. Oh, and the projector also has a focus adjuster and a built-in 0.5W speaker. But on that last one, the projector paired with the Big Blue Live makes for a rather nice combo. Anyway, back to not thinking that I would get any real use out of the projector. That changed rather quickly. Just after the projector arrived (literally, just after) we went on a family camping trip. I took the projector with me, but not really intending to actually use it. More just so I could check it out while sitting in the car for the 1.5 hour drive. But then we arrived and so did the rain. Here we were, stuck in a tent with two kids. The projector came out and worked rather well. We propped up a white blanket (lucky for us, I know) and we fired up Netflix, picked a movie and sat out the rain. A perfect opportunity to test the projector out. And lets just say that it worked well. We were able to watch a complete movie with battery life left to spare at the end. The movie was being projected from a few feet away (we have a 10 x 8 foot tent) and it looked rather nice. Included in the box is the projector itself and a USB cable for charging. There was also an information sheet with directions for use, but given the ease of use — that sheet remained in the box. The projector slides onto your iPhone 4/4S and uses the 30-pin dock connector. From there, slide the switch on the bottom to turn the projector on and the fire up the video (or app) of your choosing and get to watching. Finally, you can charge the projector by itself using the included USB cable and also charge your iPhone along with the charger using that same cable.
The bottom lineThe projector is really nice. It is easy to use, feels durable enough that it should be able to withstand a slip from the hand (though I did not test that theory) and most important — has a decent amount of battery life. As for recommending the projector — I would. It works as advertised and for that I cannot fault it in any way. I do think the price is a bit on the high side, however that is coming from me. In other words, I think the price is high, but that can probably be due to a few reasons — the first being I am cheap and the second being that I could not tell you what a projector regularly costs. Based on that, I would say that if you think this price is fair — go for it. And lastly, while I am still not sure how much use this would get from me, this is one review item that I not only enjoyed using, but also wished I could have kept. Product [Brookstone Pocket Project for iPhone 4/4S] The South-Korean electronics Giant, LG, is set to launch two new Google TV-enabled TV sets by the end of May, in 47″ and 55″ diagonally-measured sizes. These ultra-slim LED-let LCD displays will be 3D-enabled, feature 1080p resolutions and use LG’s TruMotion 120Hz for better looking fast-motion sequences. A full-sized QWERTY keyboard-remote will make it easy to navigate through the newly-redesigned Google TV interface and 6 pairs of 3D glasses will ensure that you and up to 5 buddies can enjoy screen-popping action. Via [Reuters] Samsung and AT&T are set to launch the budget-friendly Focus 2 for $50 with a new 2-year contract on May 20th. This new Windows Mobile 7.5, or Mango, features blazing fast 4G LTE connectivity, a 4-inch SUPER AMOLED display and 8 GB of on-board storage. The Samsung Focus 2 measures 4.79 “x 2.47″ x 0.43″, weighs in at 4.3 ounces and will have a 5-megapixel, HD-recording capable rear camera and a standard VGA resolution front camera. Competition is healthy, especially in the technology and gadget fields, and it makes me happy seing that manufacturers and carriers aren’t ignoring the budget-conscious crowd. Via [At&t] Digitimes is reporting that Apple is set to knock off $200 the price of the entire Macbook Air line in order to compete with the Intel-sponsored and endorsed Ultrabook line of lightweight laptops. Right now an 11″ Macbook Air goes for $999, while the 13″ starts at $1199 and goes all the way up to $1599 with an upgraded 256 GB SDD. This new price is set to launch for the back-to-season in Q3 of 2012. Intel has invested $300 million and has another $100 million set aside to continue pushing its Ultrabook initiative, and some manufacturers, such as Dell, Acer and HP, have already exceeded their sales expectations. Via [DigiTimes] I know, 10-inch tablet maybe a thing of the past already. But for some the only way they are going to own and use an Android tablet is if it comes with a 10-inch screen. And this is probably what’s in the minds of the folks at Ematic, known for their value tablets as the company just announced the new eGlide XL Pro 2. As mentioned, this is a 10-inch tablet and its running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for its OS. Aside from that, said tablet also comes pre-loaded with some productivity apps including Kobo ereader app as well as its own app store called Ematic App Shop. This provides access to the latest apps including those for news feeds, social networking and gaming. Under the hood, the eGlide XL Pro 2 features a 1GHz processor, 400MHz GPU, 4GB of internal storage, 5GB of cloud storage and 1GB of RAM. It supports microSD cards as well for additional 32GB of storage. Finally, the eGlide XL Pro also comes pre-loaded with EDAN (Ematic Digital Assistant and Navigator), a virtual assistant app that you can use for voice-to-text commands for dictating an email, Facebook message or tweet. The eGlide XL Pro 2 is now available at ShopNBC.com, Walmart.com, and Amazon.com. It will set you back $219.99.
