HTC One V now available with Bell Mobility and more

HTC One V now available with Bell Mobility

Aside from the HTC One S which is rumored to becoming available with Bell on May 17th, another HTC One phone just became available from the Canadian carrier. The official product page for the HTC One V just went live and is available contract-free for $299.95. Of course, if you’re getting it from Bell Canada, you can also get it for free but with a 3-year contract. In any case, you’ll be getting a pretty good Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone, with a good camera, Beats Audio integration and Dropbox integrated with the HTC Sense UI. The rest of the specs of the HTC One V are pretty good as well an include a 3.7-inch WVGA Super LCD, 1GHz processor and 5MP camera with 720p HD and video capture.

HTC One S release date leaked for Bell

One of HTC’s latest flagship phones in the One series has been rumored to be coming available in Canada via Bell. And to excite you even more, there is also a rumored date of release which is said to be on May 17th. The date comes from a leaked internal doc from Bell and tech blog MobileSyrup even confirms that the price point for said phone will be $599.95. Now, obviously that’s the retail value and obviously does not come with a contract. In case you didn’t catch the news early on, the HTC One S is also slated to be released through Virgin, SaskTel and Telus. Virgin Mobile has started accepting pre-registration for the device with a notation saying that the HTC One S will be available on May 17th. So, both dates coincide which proves even more that the device will finally be available on the 17th. As a reminder for those who are eyeing this device, it seems a pretty capable Android 4.0 device and what makes it even more special is the fact that it will have Beats audio integration with it. We’ll have more information about this once the device comes out.

The Daily now available for the iPhone

If you’re among those who got hooked into using The Daily iPad app, you might be interested to know that the app is now also available for your iPhone. At some point, I have to admit that I was among those who got hooked into reading my daily dose of news via The Daily to the point that I even subscribed on a weekly basis (up until now since I couldn’t find a way to cancel my subscription). But then somewhere along the way I stopped using it. But that’s just me, and going back now with the iPhone version of The Daily, well, like the iPad app it’s available as a free download from the App Store. You will be required to subscribe annually for $19.99 or weekly for $1.99, however you can test the app first after installing it as there are limited selection of articles available for free. If you find reading “premium” news articles on your iPhone appealing enough, then you’ll be glad to know that The Daily iPhone app will have 7 sections that are to be updated daily. These sections include news, business, gossip, opinion and sports. The Daily iPhone app also features the ability to save and read news items later as well as share them to your friends via email, Twitter and of course Facebook. The app’s interface is pretty good as well. You may download The Daily iPhone app by simply following the iOS App Store link below.

Study shows religious websites carry more malware than porn sites

According to Symantec’s annual Internet Security Threat Report, religious websites contain up to three times as much malware compared to porn sites. Symantec found that the average number of security threats on religious websites was roughly 115 — leaps and bounds beyond the 25 for adult sites. In addition, the report revealed that only 2.4 percent of adult websites were infected with malware. So what’s up with porn sites being so…free of infections? Here’s Symantec’s take on things:

"It is interesting to note that websites hosting adult/pornographic content are not in the top five, but ranked tenth," Symantec said. "We hypothesize that this is because pornographic website owners already make money from the Internet and, as a result, have a vested interest in keeping their sites malware-free; it's not good for repeat business."

The report was based on information taken from over 200 countries through the Symantec Global Intelligence Network. Other statistics in the report showed an 81 percent increase in malware from 2010 to 2011, a 41 percent increase in the types of maleware, and a 13.4 percent decrease in spam.

Did Samsung just feature-match and beat Apple?

After reading the entire Samsung Galaxy III coverage, I couldn’t help but wonder, did Samsung just match every of Apple and iOS’s features? Did Samsung take it even a step further in many instances? Let’s take a look:

Apple: Siri vs. Samsung: Smart Stay, Direct Call, S Voice
How Samsung does it better: It understands 8 languages. It can control the camera. It will dial someones number if you’re in the middle of text-messaging someone and you hold the phone up to you ear. It uses the camera to track your eyes and will not dim the screen if you’re reading. It will vibrate when you pick it up if you have notifications.

Apple: iTunes Match vs. Samsung: Music Hub
How Samsung does it better: iTunes Match will scan your hard drive and makes all your music available in the cloud for download/streaming, for $25/year. Samsung’s Music Hub will also scan your hard drive and will create playlists, but you can also stream their 17-million song catalog, all for $10/mo.

Apple: iCloud vs. Samsung: Dropbox partnership.
How Samsung does it better: iCloud comes with 5 GB of cloud-storage. Samsung partnered up with Dropbox and will offer 50 GB to each Galaxy S III owner.

Apple AirPlay vs. Samsung: AllShare Cast.
How Samsung does it better: AirPlay will transmit video/audio to an Apple TV and to OS X Lion. AllShare Cast, along with a new dongle, will also wireless transmit video/audio via WiFi, but will allow for mirroring and sharing on multiple devices, at the same time.

New features

Pop up play: think of it as picture-in-picture for you phone. With the big screen, you’ll be able to watch a video while browsing the web or reading an email. You can also stream a video to another screen (a TV with the AllShare dongle connected to it) while doing something else on the phone.

Buddy Photo Share: it will share pictures with friends it automatically recognizes.

S Beam: Built on top of Android 4.0 beaming capabilities, it will allow you to do a phone-to-phone transfer of files really quickly. 1 GB file in 3 minutes.

What do you think? Did Samsung cover all their bases and throw in some pretty cool features? Will they execute as elegantly and easy as Apple’s features?

Announced as early as January this year during CES 2012, the Lenovo ThinkPad E430 and E530 has just became available for sale in the US and Asia carrying a base price of $549. For starters, the E430 is a 14-incher while the E530 is a 15-incher. Both machines run Intel Core i3-2350M Sandy Bridge processors with clock speed of 2.3GHz. Both also come wtih 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, Intel HD Graphics and 1366 x 768 display resolutions. Facebook is adding filtering effects for photos on mobile devices

Not too long after Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion in cash and stock, the social network updated its Facebook for Every Phone application with a feature that allows users to apply two kinds of filters to their photos. Normal photos can be edited with sepia or black and white filters.

Facebook for Every Phone is an app non-smartphones can download that gives them some of the same conveniences smartphone users have with their regular Facebook app. Smartphone users can use a range of apps to edit their photos and share them to Facebook, but that process is more complicated on most feature phones.

As of right now, Facebook has not updated its smartphone apps to reflect these changes.

I know some people out there may want to roll their eyes when Facebook’s feature phone app comes up in conversation, but the app is quite popular. Its Facebook page has over 82 million likes.

Leaked images of the AT&T compatible Samsung 'Mandel" Windows Phone surface

A new image of the Samsung SGH-i667 smartphone has surfaced. The handset, which is also known as the Samsung Mandel is showing in white this time and still looking like it will be heading towards AT&T as an LTE capable Windows Phone smartphone. The Mandel has yet to be officially confirmed by AT&T and the details are rather sparse at the moment. In fact, the main point that we have seen thus far is that the Mandel will have 8GB of internal storage (with 5.41GB available for the user). That said, while the handset appears to have a nice look, based on the storage amount, we are thinking this is going to be a lower end device when and if it comes available.

Logitech Solar Keyboard Folio announced, will work with the iPad 2 and the 'new' iPad

Logitech has officially unveiled their latest iPad 2 (and new iPad) accessory. This one arrives as a solar powered Bluetooth keyboard case. More specifically, the case is dubbed the Logitech Solar Keyboard Folio. Said case is described as being an “ultra-slim” folio that “provides front and back protection for your iPad and its built-in Bluetooth keyboard is powered by onboard solar cells.” More important here, the solar powering. These solar panels will be able to charge with indoor and/or outdoor light and should provide enough power for the keyboard to last up to two years (based on a average use of two hours per day) once completely charged. Additionally, the Solar Keyboard Folio case features an instant on/off function that automatically wakes your iPad when you open the case. And alternatively, puts your iPad to sleep when you close the case. With all that being said, the Logitech Solar Keyboard Folio will be available (this month) for those in the US and Europe and the price will be $129.99.
