According to StatCounter, Google Chrome has become the most used web browser in the world for its first week ever. The week of May 14th-20th marks the first time that the browser ousted Internet Explorer — the former reigning champion. So what accounts for the rising popularity of Chrome? Don’t look at the North American market as IE still leads that race 37 to 26 percent. In Europe, however, Chrome has been ahead of IE for the past two weeks, but only by a percentage point, while Firefox is still in first place. Mozilla’s trusty browser is also doing quite well in Africa holding a comfy 36.69 percent market share. As it turns out, the culprits skewing the data are Asia and South America. IE has a 50 percent share in Japan while it accounts for nearly three-quarters of internet traffic in South Korea and China. In South America, Chrome holds a 50 percent overall share. We can probably trace this statistic to Orkut which is one of the most visited sites in Brazil. Regardless of how well Chrome has been doing these past few weeks, I still think that they really need to adopt Firefox’s Control+F (search) feature. What is being reviewed?Up for review today is the iProtection case from OtterBox. This case is currently available and comes in a variety of colors. The iProtection case is priced at $89.95 and promises to bring “the most usable and protective solution possible” with goodies to include the use of robust silicone, a built-in screen protector and an engineered design that was inspired by the iPad. That being said, keep reading to see how well we think the OtterBox iProtection case measures up in real-world use. Disclaimer: This iProtection case was provided to GadgeTell by OtterBox for the purpose of this review.
My thoughtsIn the tech and gadget world we tend to associate certain products and certain companies with certain things. An example pertaining to this review, when I think of OtterBox I think of solid, rugged and durable protection for my devices. In this case, rugged protection for the iPad. The folks at OtterBox recently sent over an iProtection case for the iPad. Specifically, for the iPad 2 and the new iPad. And thankfully, this case is no exception to that rule of thought — it offers a solid looking design with lots of protection for the iPad. The iProtection iPad case is actually a few pieces in one. You have the front protection in the form of a built-in screen protector with a polycarbonate shell, a polycarbonate rear piece with memory foam backing the iPad and a silicone bumper that fits over the back. Then there is the shield stand which doubles as a front protector when attached and a stand when not attached (to the rest of the case). The shield stand will allow the user to prop the iPad in landscape or portrait mode and features magnets which help to conserve battery power on the iPad when not in use. Otherwise, the OtterBox case brings a few other goodies that you would expect. For example, the case is easy to put on, and also to take off. The case also offers protection for the ports. Simply put, this case offers solid protection for an iPad. And while I would normally be a bit afraid to drop a gadget on purpose, in this case I can say that the case works. I dropped my iPad from waist height onto a hard tile floor — and it survived with no marks, scratches or most important — cracks in the display. Granted, that is not to say I am going to treat my iPad with any less care, but it is to say I have quite a bit less to worry about when my iPad is protected in the OtterBox iProtection case.
The bottom lineNow for the answer to the big question; Is this something that I would recommend? Or perhaps more to the point; Is this something that I would spend my own money on. In short, yes for both. The case is on the pricey side at just shy of $90, however if you are looking for protection — this offers that. Plus, the case looks good and is available in a variety of colors. We had the black case in for review, however there is also black with yellow trim and black with blue trim as well as grey with pink trim, grey with white trim and grey with an aqua green trim. In case you want to wirelessly sync your music with your car stereo system, then you may want to check out HTC’s latest mobile accessory. Dubbed the HTC Bluetooth Music Adapter, you simply plug in the device to the AUX port and connect your phone or other Bluetooth enabled device. After successfully connecting the two devices, music should play through the stereo system up to 5 hours on a single charge. In addition, the device costs $59.99, which I feel is a bit expensive. Since it is an HTC product, there is native support to auto connect with HTC smartphones and tablets, but you can always manually connect it to other smartphones and tablets. A full list of compatible devices can be found on the Sprint product page below. A CSR aptX codec is built-into the Bluetooth Music Adapter in order to provide for better audio quality transmitted through Bluetooth. If you’re interested in the HTC Bluetooth Music Adapter, then feel free to visit the link below and place an order. Via [Sprint]
In an attempt to directly compete with Rogers and Bell, Telus has launched its own low-cost plan that aims to entice customers interested in a voice and messaging plan. The Voice and Messaging plan will only be available from now until May 31st and is offered to new and current customers looking to extend their contract. The plan offers 200 anytime minutes, unlimited nationwide family calling, caller ID, voicemail, call waiting, conference call, unlimited early nights and weekends, unlimited SMS and MMS, and unlimited BBM for BlackBerry. The only caveat to this plan is the fact that you will have to pay for data for every MB used, which could add up quickly. The Voice and Messaging for $30 a month plan clearly appeals to those with a featurephone and looking for a nice text and voice plan. Via [MobileSyrup]
Well it was fun while it lasted right? Days after the APK for the Samsung Galaxy S III S Voice app was leaked, Samsung and Vlingo began blocking access from any device that isn’t a Galaxy S III. If the brick wall hasn’t hit S Voice on your device yet, it will soon enough. The blocking isn’t happening to every device at once. This morning, S Voice was working fine on my phone. It stopped working at some point during the afternoon hours. Attempting to get any answers from S Voice is shot down by a network error message. I wouldn’t say this is much of a loss because this version of S Voice wasn’t all that good. If you ever got it running on your device, you may have noticed it would not always respond when the microphone icon was touched. It behaved just like you’d expect leaked software to behave. Besides, S Voice is basically Vlingo anyway. Feel free to download Vlingo from Google Play for free regardless of your device. Read [Phandroid] Also Read [Pocket Now] Just a quick note to inform everyone in the US who are raring to get their hands on the new Samsung Galaxy S III, Amazon has just put the smartphone on pre-order status. Said Samsung Galaxy S III is the international, unlocked version and so it is inevitable that it will be sold for a higher price. Are you ready to depart with your $799? If so go ahead and follow the via link below which should direct you to the Amazon page for the white and blue models of the Samsung Galaxy S III. You’ll be better off to know as well that being an unlocked version, this device will work with AT&T but not with Verizon or Sprint since it is not a CDMA phone. The good news however is that you’ll be able to get 4G HSDPA+ but not LTE since the models available are not the LTE-capable units. So this news goes out to all AT&T subscribers or those who are planning to get a phone that will run on AT&T network. Amazon is promising to deliver the blue Samsung Galaxy S III on May 29 while the white one will be available on June 1. The question now is, are you willing to spend $799 for the unlocked version of the Samsung Galaxy S3, or are you going to wait for other US carriers to offer on contract? Via [Amazon] and [unwired view] Being the official sponsor of the 2012 Summer Olympics, you probably expected Samsung to take advantage of this. If you did, that expectation is about to be fulfilled as Samsung is about to release a special Olympic Edition Galaxy Note. Unfortunately, that Galaxy Note will only be available in the UK. And there’s a slim chance that the Galaxy Note will become available in the international market. Anyway, an actual photo of the Olympic Edition Samsung Galaxy Note has just been spotted. What makes this Note different from the usual models is its special back cover featuring the Union Flag of the Great Britain. The back cover is made of glossy finish as well. Said Galaxy Note will be sold exclusively in the UK through O2. And aside from that, Samsung is also releasing a special edition of the Galaxy Y. Finally, if you’re getting the Galaxy Note or Galaxy Y, you’ll can also win tickets to an Olympic Games event, Team GB training camp or a celebration event. Any chance that Samsung will do the same Galaxy Note models in different countries? That would be awesome. Via [GSM Arena], [Twitter]
According to a recent report over on Fierce Telecom, Verizon is planning to raise prices for FiOS customers. The details are coming by way of a senior executive within Verizon who stated that the price increases will be necessary to help offset costs and increase profitability. And for those wondering, Verizon still has no plans to continue rolling out FiOS support into areas that do not yet have it. Otherwise, in terms of those new rates, this is being done in part to help offset content costs and customers will begin to see the price hikes on items such as increased fees for set-top box and digital converted box rentals. Simply put, while there was not any timeline given as to when — it looks like Verizon FiOS customers can expect to begin paying more. Via [Fierce Telecom]
Motorola has recently offered a status update in terms of their Ice Cream Sandwich plans. This update arrives in the form of an updated timeline based on device as well as some statements that may make some Motorola device owners nervous. According to Motorola, they are only going to be updating devices that will benefit from getting Ice Cream Sandwich. More specifically; “We work very closely with Google and cell phone carriers for every software update. And, obviously we want the new release to improve our devices. If we determine that can't be done—well then, we're not able to upgrade that particular device.”
But that begin said, while that may come as bit of not so good news for some, we sort of have to agree. After all, what good would it be to get Android 4.0 if all it did was make your handset sluggish and difficult to use. Otherwise, if you are currently using a Motorola Android handset, you may want to follow this link here to get an idea of when, or if you have a new dessert coming. Via [Motorola] | |
