Industry analysts are predicting some bad news for Hewlett-Packard as the company is expected to shed thousands of jobs. In order to cut costs and institute more efficient business practices, HP is expected to cut 25,000 corporate jobs over an unspecified time frame. A high majority of the jobs, such as 10,000-15,000, will come from the IT sector of HP as many companies are turning to cloud computing alternatives. The overall organization restructuring involves increasing research and development funding. In addition, the CEO of HP, Meg Whitman, plans to combine the PC and Printing industry, two of the more profitable sectors of HP and cut excessive jobs . Early retirement packages are expected to be used as a method to layoff thousands of workers. The expected savings resulting from the job cuts could be anywhere from $1-$3 billion. HP will give a detailed fiscal report of its earnings in Q2 of 2012 where more information could be announced on the potential job cuts. Via [Bloomberg]  
Comcast placed a 250GB data cap on its residential customers a long time ago. For most people, 250GB was more than enough data to satisfy their needs. Today, Comcast announced it is moving away from its 250GB restriction, and will test out a couple more options that will place customers into different tiers. One of Comcast’s ideas will determine how much data a customer gets based on the type of internet plan they currently have. The baseline will be 300GB per month, but those with faster and more expensive plans such as Blast and Extreme, will get more data each month. Anyone who goes over their monthly data allotment will have to purchase more data at the rate of $10 for 50GBs. The other plan is more straightforward. Comcast would just increase everyone’s data allowance to 300GBs a month and charge $10 for an additional 50GB of data if a customer needs it. Comcast is currently testing these new policies in certain areas. Comcast says if you’re not in a test areas, the current 250GB data restriction will be suspended until a new single policy can be put in place. Via [Comcast]  
A week after announcing that all Harry Potter e-books will be available for free in the Amazon Kindle Lending Library for Amazon Prime subscribers, Pottermore.com has also reached an agreement with another e-book distributor – Kobo. Similar to the arrangements with other e-book distributors such as Barnes & Noble, Sony Reader and Google, the e-books are not directly sold on the Kobo website. Instead, there’s a landing page for the availability of the e-books together with the link to purchase which will direct you to the Pottermore site. When you purchase the e-book via the link given on the Kobo site, you will have to link your Pottermore account to your Kobo account. This will make it easier for you to send your Harry Potter e-books over to your Kobo library. You can then read your e-books using the Kobo reader or the Kobo reader apps. If the $199 iPhone 4S is too expensive for your fancy, then you may want to consider purchasing the less expensive iPhone 4. Typically, Apple and other retailers sell the iPhone 4 for $99 on a two year contract, but Best Buy has recently cut the price down to $49.99 on a two year contract. There is no word on whether this is a limited promotion by Best Buy to generate some quick sales or if this is a permanent price cut. In any event, those looking to purchase the iPhone 4 should definitely consider stopping by the local Best Buy store since $49 is the lowest price you will find for a new iPhone 4 model. Just a quick reminder for all our readers in the UK who are eyeing the new Samsung Galaxy S III. T-Mobile UK has started accepting pre-orders for the smartphone with a notation saying that it is due for release on May 30, 2012. Both the Pebble White and Marble Blue versions of the Galaxy S III are available for pre-order. The device is available with various T-Mobile data plans and the UK carrier is recommending the £49.99 up front and £36 a month for 24 months plan to go along with the device. The powerful HTC One S, running Android 4.0 with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, can be purchased today in Canada through several different carriers. We already saw the pricing information for Bell and Virgin Mobile, and while the prices are similar, there are a few differences. We will examine the prices offered by Fido and Telus. Off contract, Telus offers the One S for $569, which $30 cheaper than the $599 offered by the three other carriers. Purchasing the smartphone off contract is a good idea for those who plan to upgrade to a different phone in the near future, and do not wish to be tied to a long-term contract. On the three-year side, Telus has the One S for just $99, which is definitely a solid deal. By comparison, Fido is offering the One S for $150 on a three year deal. We had known that the HTC One S smartphone was heading into Canada by way of several carriers including Telus, Virgin Mobile and Bell Mobility. And well, it looks like we now also have some pricing for the latter two (we mentioned the Telus pricing the other day). Anyway, the handset, which will be available today, will set you back as little as $99.99 on a three-year agreement. And just to clarify, the Bell and Virgin pricing is the same on three-year terms. Well, technically speaking Bell has it for $99.95, but we are thinking that a $0.05 difference will not mean all that much. Boost Mobile has announced a new partnership with Smith Micro. And what that means for Boost users — Visual Voicemail. Yup, Boost Mobile users will soon be getting a new feature. Well, select Boost Mobile customers anyway. According to details provided by Boost, the Visual Voicemail will be available beginning on May 31st. The service will be priced at $1.99 per month and first come available for the HTC EVO Design 4G (which is due to be released on the 31st). In addition, those interested will also be able to add voicemail-to-text transcription for an additional and yet to be specified monthly fee. Well, what do you know? Some folks in the UK are bound to get lucky come May 29 when Samsung starts distributing the Samsung Galaxy S III to those who pre-ordered them from the Brand Store in Westfield Starford City, London. This comes a day earlier than the official UK release date which is supposed to be on May 30. The lucky customers will have to pick-up their much awaited device starting from 6PM on said date. Collection of the Samsung Galaxy S III earlier than the usual will be granted if you’ve pre-ordered the device from the Samsung Brand Store before 6PM on May 29. That means that if you haven’t done so yet, you can still place your order and become one of the lucky individuals who will own the handset prior to official release in the UK. Unfortunately for those pre-ordered online, your device will not qualify for the early distribution and you have to wait until May 30 to get hold of your new unit.
