What is being reviewed?Up for review today is the Lifeproof iPhone 4/4S case. The case is touted as being water, dirt, snow and shock proof. Read our review and find out if the Lifeproof case really is life proof. Disclaimer: This Lifeproof iPhone 4/4S case was provided to GadgeTell for the purpose of this review.
The specsWhile specs are not something that we tend to look for with a mobile phone case — in this instance, we suspect they will apply. For example, the case has been tested to Military Specifications MIL-STD-810F-516.5 for shock and impact protection and it also has a full IP-68 rating against water and dust. Also worth noting, the case weighs 28 grams (less than one ounce). Some additional specs include the following; - Operational depth to 6.6 feet.
- Drop height to 6.6 feet.
- Temperature range of -40 degrees F to 140 degrees F.
Probably a bit more specific to a persons daily use and needs, the Lifeproof case will protect you against just about anything from minute dust particles to a fully submerged device. For me this means that I can go to the beach or go camping or out running without having to worry about my phone getting stuck in the sand or getting caught in the rain. And in addition to the case being fully sealed, it also ships with a headphone adapter for the times when you need and/or want headphones. My thoughtsMoving past the specs and into what I think after spending a few weeks using the case. Well, as I touched on in the specs portion — this case has helped me on the beach, while camping and also while in the rain. And trust me as a runner that lives in Florida — there are times when it can RAIN. I will say that despite worrying a little bit, hey, who wouldn’t when they are carrying an expensive phone with no insurance — this case can and will protect your iPhone against water. Short of actually dropping the phone in a bucket of water, I would say that without doubt — assuming your Lifeproof case is properly sealed, it will offer adequate protection against damage. In terms of the drops as that is something that is bound to happen from time to time and as much as I hate saying this because it probably means it will happen soon, but I have not dropped my iPhone since I have begun using the Lifeproof. In this respect, I am going to have to trust the specs and take the word that it can handle a drop up to 6.6 feet. Aside from my running, camping and beach experience, a few other situations that I can think of the Lifeproof case coming in handy includes work related (construction sites), snowboarding, skiing and maybe off-roading. The folks at Life Proof also note that the case would be good for other items such as surfing and singing in the shower. I have been using the Lifeproof case in black. Nothing all that exciting about that color, however there are other options available such as pink, purple and white. And for those wondering what you can expect to pay for this kind of protection, $79.99. Otherwise, I can say that the case is easy to put on and also, easy to take off. One word of caution, make sure the case is sealed well to make sure you have the proper protection. The case has a good feel, and by that it means that it doesn’t seem to get sticky or slippery when in your pocket or hand or even when it is wet. The case also does not seem to add lots of extra bulk or weight (thanks to that 28 gram weight). The bottom lineI live in Florida and I spend more than an average amount of time outside and on foot. Needless to say, sweat and rain are inevitable for me and for that I am more than happy to have a Lifeproof case. And because I have been so happy I am more than happy to offer this as a suggestion to anyone that may be looking for similar protection for their iPhone. We are beginning to see more and more iPhone apps that deal with (or assist you with waking up from) sleeping. Of course, we had the MotionX: Sleep, of which one feature was the smart alarm. Then we came across Sleep Time, which is another smart alarm app. And well, it looks like another sleep related app has been released. But instead of waking, this app is promising to “influence your dreams.” The app is called Dream:ON and is currently available in the iOS App Store with the following description; “Do you want to create your perfect dream? Perhaps you would like to dream about taking a relaxing stroll through the countryside, being able to fly, or lying on a sun drenched beach? Would you like to wake up feeling refreshed and happy? Then Dream:ON.”
Anyway, the Dream:ON app requires iOS 5.0 or later for use and comes by way of psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman from the University of Hertfordshire. In terms of how this all works. According to what we have seen — you are expected to place your phone in your bed so it can monitor your sleep patterns. The app can then “sense” when you begin to dream and from that point, the app will begin playing a “SoundScape” that has “been carefully designed to help create your desired dream.” That all being said, we have yet to test this app so we cannot comment on how well it actually works. But in the end, the app is free so those looking to shape their dreams — why not give it a shot. Via [Dream:ON] and [Gizmag]
We have yet to get anything official from either Sprint or Samsung, however there has been a recent suggestion in terms of an upcoming release of the Galaxy Note. Well, maybe not so much a hint that a release is coming, but a picture of a Galaxy Note on the Sprint website. Sadly the picture is not in the form of a coming soon style listing but instead for a stock looking image for the Sprint Mobile Controls. Bottom line here, yes Sprint has used an image on their website that appears to be an unbranded Galaxy Note phablet. But no, this does not convince us that the handset is actually going to be released. In fact, we suspect this is just the marketing department and their use of a stock phone image. But hey, those who want to the Galaxy Note on Sprint, you can at least keep hoping.
Those using Netflix on an Android device may want to fire up the Android Market Google Play and download the latest update as it looks to contain a few worthwhile (but not necessarily exciting) changes. But first, the basics — Netflix for Android has been updated to version 1.7.1 and with that comes the requirement of Android 2.2 or later for use. That bit aside, this latest Google Play changelog informs us that the Netflix for Android app has gotten some stability improvements and bug fixes along with an improved user interface (for the volume control function). Via [Google Play] Google just announced about its upcoming revamp of its social networking venture, Google+. According to Google, the new Google+ will soon be sporting a new navigation scheme featuring drag-and-drop elements, hover over for revealing set of actions and the ability to show or hide apps by moving them in and out of “More.” The previously static icons will be replaced with a dynamic ribbon of apps on the left. This will make it easier to access your favorites and adjusts your preferences over time. Essentially, the new navigation reduces the clutter in the navigation bar of Google+. Additionally, Google+ will soon be making it easier to share with your circles anywhere. Among the new features related to this include full bleed photos and videos, stream of conversation “cards” that makes it easier to scan and join discussions, and activity drawer that highlights the community around your content. Google has also added a dedicated Hangouts page that creates more opportunities to connect in person. The new Hangouts page features an always-updated list of invitations, quick access to every public and On Air Hangout, and rotating billboard of popular hangouts, pro tips and other items. All of these new features will be gradually rolled out to all Google+ users in the coming days. Here’s a short demo of the things to come for Google+.

To kickstart this gig, Spotify has teamed up with popular websites such as The Huffington Post, ELLE, Entertainment Weekly and more. Even Tumblr is jumping into the Spotify bandwagon by fully integrating the Play Button into the Tumblr dashboard. If you have a Tumblr account, you can just type in a song or album and Tumblr will create the widget that you can include in your blog’s theme. To install the Spotify Play Button on your website, you simply grab any song, album or playlist URI from within Spotify and go to the Spotify developer website to get the embed link that you can use on your website or blog. The developer website has the Spotify Play Button generator that makes it easy for you to generate the embed code. Once installed on your site, anyone who’s new to Spotify will be prompted to set up the Spotify desktop app which will power the button in the background. This allows your site visitors to enjoy your music without leaving your site. Via [Spotify]
In a move that Nokia seems to be describing as “putting people first” — they have come forward and admitted to software issues with the Nokia Lumia 900. According to the details coming from the Nokia Conversations blog; “soon after this flagship device began selling, we identified a software issue. In short, a memory management issue was discovered that could, in some cases, lead to loss of data connectivity.”
And sure, while a software issue dealing with data connectivity is not idea, we are slightly refreshed to see Nokia taking this upfront approach. In addition to admitting the issue, Nokia has also stated that the issue is “purely in the phone software” and have already promised a software update. The update should be available this coming Monday, which is April 16th. For those who cannot wait or cannot deal with a phone that has data connectivity issues for another (almost) week, Nokia has also stated that users can take their handset in and swap it for an updated model. Lastly, for your trouble, Nokia will be giving anyone who has already purchased a Lumia 900 a $100 credit towards their bill. Via [Nokia Conversations] | |
