Project Glass makes a trip to Charlie Rose and more

Project Glass makes a trip to Charlie Rose

The image you see here is the first publicly available photo that was taken with Google’s Project Glass. Google’s Sebastian Thrun took Project Glass on Charlie Rose’s show recently and effortlessly snapped this picture before uploading it to Google+.

It was pretty astonishing seeing Thrun quickly take and share this picture. It was a completely hands-free experience just as the concept video suggested. Thrun also mentioned how he was able to see his Google+ friends as he was sharing the picture with his circles.

The video of Thrun being interviewed by Charlie Rose is now available online. The entire interview is not focused on Project Glass, but it does kick things off.

Apple wants to create a cafeteria that only serves its employees

It’s easy to suggest employees leave work related matters in the workplace, but we all know that’s next to impossible. People who are really invested in their jobs will bring it with them wherever they go. For Apple employees, this includes various food establishments around the campus. A company like Apple also has some juicy secrets that anyone would love to know. That’s why Apple wants to create a large cafeteria that will allow its employees to talk freely about projects without giving anything away to competitors.

The cafeteria is going to be built less than a mile away from Apple’s main campus in Cupertino, California. According to documents from the Cupertino Planning Commission Meeting, the cafeteria will span 21,468 square feet, will contain 204 seats, house 70 vehicles and have spaces dedicated for bicycles.

This new cafeteria will be strictly for Apple employees. Although this lessens the chance of an outsider learning about secrets during lunch, there will always be jokes about Apple employees entering bars after work.

Walmart.com offers a solution for customers without debit or credit cards

Walmart.com just started a new service that allows anyone with cash to purchase things from the website. It’s called Pay with Cash, and it works just like you’d expect it to. Instead of paying for items with a debit or credit card, customers can choose to complete all transactions within a physical Walmart location.

Here’s how it works. There is now a new payment method for checking out through Walmart.com called “cash.” When you choose this option, your Walmart store will hold your order for 48 hours. After paying for your online purchase in the store with cash, Walmart will ship it wherever you’d like. This even applies to Site to Store orders.

There are some restrictions to using Pay with Cash. Walmart’s site says it “does not include Marketplace items, tires, or photo products. Does not apply to Pick Up Today orders. Excludes Site to Store FedEx orders.”

Apple is 10 years begin Microsoft in terms of security, Kaspersky claims

Eugene Kaspersky, CEO and co-founder of the Russia-based security firm (and antivirus/malware protection vendor) Kaspersky, has stated that Apple is 10 years behind Microsoft in terms of security and that Apple needs to completely overhaul their security systems, just as Microsoft did. This comes after OSX’s security has come in to question after the spread of the Flashback trojan, that as been reportedly infected over 600,000 Macs.

"I think [Apple] are ten years behind Microsoft in terms of security," Kaspersky told CBR. "For many years I've been saying that from a security point of view there is no big difference between Mac and Windows. It's always been possible to develop Mac malware, but this one was a bit different. For example it was asking questions about being installed on the system and, using vulnerabilities, it was able to get to the user mode without any alarms."

Its worth noting that users should take these claims with a grain of salt as its in Kaspersky’s best interest to sell more antivirus/malware protection software to Mac users, who generally don’t install malware-detecting software at all.

Samsung outs the SE-218BB DVD/CD writer made for tablets and ultrabooks

With the popularity of tablets and ultrabooks today, Samsung has deemed it just about the right time to release a new external DVD writer specifically for tablets and ultrabooks. Hence, Samsung has outed the SE-218BB DVD/CD writer which according to Samsung happens to be the world’s thinnest external DVD writer to date. Said DVD writer sports a 14 mm thin body which is said to be 18% thinner and 8% lighter than standard DVD writers. The device can be connected to your tablet or ultrabooks via USB port. But perhaps what makes this DVD writer worthy of your bucks is the fact that it will work with your Mac, PC or any other devices with Android 3.1 or higher for its OS. The Samsung SE-218BB DVD/CD writer reads data on the following data media - 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-RW, 8X DVD±R recording, 5X DVD-RAM recording, 6X DVD+R Dual Layer recording, 6X DVD-R Dual Layer recording, 8X DVD+RW recording and 6X DVD-RW recording. And before we forget the device is also said to be and eco-friendly product since it was made using lead-free soldering technology which eliminates harmful materials such as Pb, cd, cr+6, Hg, PBBs and PBDE. The SE-218BB DVD/CD writer is available now in the market and retails for $59.99.

Samsung Galaxy S3 now showing in the Samsung Kies software

We are expecting Samsung to unveil the Galaxy S3 smartphone during the May 3rd announcement. And while we are waiting, we have seen plenty of Galaxy S3 related leaks and this latest is dealing with the Samsung Kies software. Yup, coming ahead of the announcement, we have another Galaxy S3 related bit. This latest is a listing for the handset in the Kies software. Or more specifically, two listings for the handset in Kies. The Galaxy S3 is noted as being the GT-I9300 and the GT-I9300T. That being said, we are uncertain the difference between the two models at this time. Not to mention, the images that accompany the listings did little to help.

Google Drive will soon be integrated into Chrome OS

As many have likely assumed, it is looking as if Google Drive will soon be integrated with Chrome OS. The details are coming by way of Wired, who have recently spoken with Scott Johnson from Google who noted that they have plans to “integrate [Google] Drive into the native file system of Chrome OS." Simply put, this will allow Chrome OS users to have a bit more familiar of a file system. Johnson also went on to note that “all the core OS functionality will use [Google] Drive as a place to store data — if that's what you opt in to." With that, those rocking a Chromebook and hoping to see the Drive integration — you will need to look forward to getting version 20. And rest assured in knowing that the Chrome OS Google Drive integration should be well tested as it will be included in version 19 prior to the official (version 20) release. This Google Drive integration combined with the “Aura” interface and it is starting to look like Chrome OS may be able to attract some more mainstream users.
