GadgeTell Review: Jabra Sport Bluetooth headset, our follow-up review

What is being reviewed?

Up for (re)review today is the Jabra Sport Bluetooth Stereo headset. We should point out that due to issues with our first review unit, we received another headset from Jabra so we could follow-up with a proper review. Needless to say, you can see the first review by clicking here, or if you have already read that one, continue on with this post to read the current review.

Disclaimer: The Jabra Sport Bluetooth Stereo headset was provided to GadgeTell for the purpose of this review.

My thoughts

If you read the original review you will likely have seen that I really liked the headset. The Jabra Sport was comfortable to wear and seemed to have rather good battery life. And perhaps more important in my case, it was comfortable to wear and had a battery that served me for extended time periods — upwards and a bit over three hours. In addition, the headset is easy to use without having to fumble around for the buttons that sit on the right side earpiece.

Otherwise, the only drawback and the reason that caused me to hesitate recommending the headset — the original unit that I had simply stopped working after a short while. And to make it a bit more scary, it stopped working with seemingly no fix in sight and after what I would have considered some relatively light and careful use. Well, long but still light use. That being said, this second headset that I received worked and has continued to work which means I am more than happy to recommend it to anyone that happens to be in the market for such a Bluetooth headset. And just in case the fact that the first unit that I had died an early death may scare anyone, I did call the customers service line (pretending to be a customer) and was treated very well and even offered a replacement unit. Of course, given my Jabra Sport headset came from PR, I could not take the customer service up on that offer.

The bottom line

If you are looking for a Stereo Bluetooth headset and are unsure of which model to buy, I say, how about checking out the Jabra Sport.

Google Play Music adds a few new features by way of Labs

Google has recently released a few new features for Google Play Music users. The new goodies have arrived by way of the Labs, which means that you will have to choose to enable them. That bit aside though, the new goodies include Desktop Notifications, HTML5 Audio and 5-Star Ratings. These all come disabled by default however that can be changed easily enough by hitting the Google Play Music link at the bottom of this post and then clicking the button for “enabled” next to the feature(s) you want to use. Breaking each of these down a bit further and we have the following;

  • Desktop Notifications: Find out what’s playing without having to switch back to your Google Music tab. A notification will appear at the start of each song with the song title, artist name, album title, and album cover. This lab only works in the Chrome browser.
  • HTML5 Audio: Listen to your music without the need for Flash. Works in all browsers that support MP3 playback with HTML5 audio: Chrome, Safari 3.1+, and IE9+.
  • 5-Star Ratings: Rate songs on a 5-star scale rather than thumbs-up or thumbs-down.

And lastly, as Google so kindly notes — these are still Labs features which means that “they may change, break, or disappear at any time.”

Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn resigns, Mike Mikan steps up as interim CEO

Earlier today, it was announced that Brian Dunn, long-time employee and recent CEO of Best Buy, resigned leaving the position open for Mike Mikan.  While the news of the resignation took much of the public by surprise, it wasn’t completely out of the blue.  Best Buy stands firm saying the decision was mutual and represents a change in leadership and philosophies.  However, the resignation comes shortly after Best Buy’s dismal fourth quarter earning’s report in which the company plans to close 50 stores following a $1.7 billion loss in revenue.

Rising to CEO from a sales associate position, Brian Dunn is a story that illustrates how hard work and determination pays off in the end.  We wish him well in his career and look forward to see how Best Buy handles its operations from here on out with Mikan and the permanent CEO replacement.

Chrome OS will soon look a bit more like Windows

It appears as if some changes will be coming to Chrome OS. And nicely done, they appear to be changes that could help spur some adoption. Well, that may be thinking a bit on the positive side however we will say they appear interesting. More realistically, a future release of Chrome OS (a release that was recently made available for developers) will bring a look that is a bit more similar to what many computer users are familiar with. Simply put, Chrome OS will depart from the single browser window into a set-up where you can use and access multiple browser windows. And perhaps a bit more important here, Chrome OS will also have a dock/taskbar on the bottom with links and access to key features such as the clock, Wi-Fi, battery indicator and any apps that are running and/or installed. You know, Chrome OS will look a bit more Windows-like. That said, while the important part may be that this is coming, for those who are curious — the bottom bar will officially be known as the “shelf” in Chrome OS.
