Huawei is creating two new myTouch smartphones and more

Huawei is creating two new myTouch smartphones

What you see above are two new supposed myTouch devices coming from T-Mobile in the spring. According to Pocketnow, T-Mobile has sought out Huawei to make the smartphones. Much like the previous line of myTouch phones, Hauwei’s will create two models – one with a keyboard and one without.

At this time, no information regarding specifications have been revealed. Based on Pocketnow’s sources, the two myTouch phones are running Gingerbread. The images depict a user interface that isn’t stock Gingerbread.

We don’t expect these phones (model numbers U8680 and U8730) to be high-end devices. The myTouch line has increasingly become low cost, mid-range devices.

The Nav 13x will likely run into a mess of legal problems

The industry is currently obsessed with Ultrabooks. There’s a misconception that Ultrabooks are just another name for really thin laptops, but Ultrabook is actually an Intel trademark. Therefore, no one can use the term “Ultrabook” to sell their computers without going through Intel first. A company named Netbook Navigator must have missed the memo because it’s selling a netbook and passing it off as an Ultrabook.

The Nav 13x may be thin, but it lacks the specs necessary to claim Ultrabook status. It has a 1.86Ghz dual-core Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM and starts with a 32GB solid-state drive. Prices start at $499 without an operating system.

Netbook Navigator also designed the Nav 13x to bare a striking resemblance to a MacBook Air. It’s actually almost identical to a MacBook Air. Over the past year, we’ve seen Apple throw its legal muscle around for much less. All things considered, we’d imagine it’s only a matter of time before production of the Nav 13x is shut down.

Amazon Kindle Lending Library now touting more than 100,000 titles

Back in mid-January we had heard that the Kindle Owners Lending Library was “off to a strong start” and well, it looks like things have continued to move in a positive direction. Well, in a positive direction in terms of more and more titles coming available anyway. According to details coming from an Amazon press release;

“The Kindle Owners' Lending Library continues to grow rapidly, now offering more than 100,000 books that Amazon Prime members with Kindles can borrow for free—including over 100 New York Times Best Sellers like The Hunger Games trilogy—as frequently as a book a month, with no due dates.”

Sounds like another great reason to become an Amazon Prime subscriber because not only will you be able to borrow ebooks from the Lending Library, but you will also be able to watch television and movies and get free two-day shipping. For those needing a reminder, Amazon Prime will set you back $79 per year, however for those who like to try before they buy — Amazon does offer a 30-day free trial of Prime.

Otherwise, the Kindle Owners Lending Library allows Kindle users to download (borrow) and read one free book per month without having to worry about due rates. Just pick, download and begin reading. And lastly, a few of the milestone events for the Kindle Owners Lending Library;

  • Since launching the Kindle Owners' Lending Library in November 2011, selection has grown by over 20 times.
  • More than a third of the Top 20 Kindle Best Sellers in February are enrolled in the library and available to borrow for free.
  • More Amazon customers are reading independently-published books, with over 1 million KDP Select books borrowed through the Kindle Owners' Lending Library since the program launched for indie authors in December.
  • KDP authors participating in the Kindle Owners' Lending Library have earned $1.8 million from the KDP Select fund so far, which is an incremental 24% on top of their royalties from paid sales.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview release proves popular, gets more than one million downloads in the first 24 hours

We saw Microsoft release the Consumer Preview edition of Windows 8 the other day and it looks like many many people could not resist checking things out. According to a tweet from the Microsoft team that is building Windows 8 — they had more than one million downloads in the first day alone. More specifically;

One day later…one million downloads of the consumer preview

That being said, we wonder how many of those million downloads will remain in use. Or more specifically, how many of those million downloads were actually installed. Me personally, I am just one in that group of a million plus. I downloaded the Consumer Preview release and promptly installed it on my iMac running Parallels and then played around for an hour or two and have not touched it since.

Lawsuit seeks to prevent broadcast television from streaming over the internet

On March 14, 2012, a company named Aereo is hoping to launch a service that takes over-the-air broadcast television signals, and repurpose them for internet consumption. Simply put, Aereo plans to make broadcast television available on laptops, tablets and smartphones. Customers (initially in New York City) will have to pay $12 a month for this service, which isn’t a lot to ask considering they’re also getting access to an online DVR to record their shows in HD. However, Aereo is facing a lawsuit brought on by PBS, Fox, Univision and WNET that claims Aereo doesn’t have the right to operate such a service.

The plaintiff’s main complaint is that Aereo lacks the proper licenses to the programs it’s planning on providing to its customers. They also said Aereo did not ask for permission to use the signals that beam these broadcasts to Aereo’s antennas.

“No amount of technological gimmickry by Aereo – or claims that it is simply providing a set of sophisticated “rabbit ears” – changes the fundamental principle of copyright law that those who wish to retransmit Plantiffs’ broadcasts may do so only with Plantiffs’ authority,” the lawsuit reads.

Aereo responded to the lawsuit on its website.

“Aereo does not believe that the broadcasters' position has any merit and it very much looks forward to a full and fair airing of the issues,” the company said. “Consumers are legally entitled to access broadcast television via an antenna and they are entitled to record television content for their personal use.   Innovations in technology over time, from digital signals to Digital Video Recorders ("DVRs"), have made access to television easier and better for consumers.”

The broadcasters are seeking damages and an injunction to prevent Aereo from launching.
