CES 2012: Griffin Twenty uses an Airport Express to turn any speaker into an AirPlay speaker

Griffin TwentyApple’s AirPlay technology is great, but it’s not necessarily the easiest tech to take advantage of. With the exception of the tv AirPlay devices, particularly speakers are relatively expensive. Griffin wants to help with that by turning any speaker you already have into an AirPlay speaker.

Twenty is a small device that you plug your Airport Express into, then connect it to a pair of speakers that you may already have. If you set up two speakers and a powered subwoofer the Twenty will be able to give you 2.1 channel sound. With that you won’t have to go through the trouble of trying to find a brand new pair of speakers that you might not like.

The Twenty will simply act as the amplifier for your music, so the sound will still depend mostly on your speakers. It’s such a great idea, it’s surprising that nobody had thought of it before now. Griffin doesn’t have a firm release date or price for the Twenty just yet. You can be sure that it will be out sometime this year and that it will cost less than a pair of AirPlay speakers.

CES 2012: Hands on with the Sony Xperia SmartWatch

The Sony Xperia SmartWatch always sort of sounded like a really cool device. Well, a cool device assuming you want to be able to get some information from your smartphone on your wrist anyway. But that being said, after spending a few minutes playing with the SmartWatch here at CES – this sort of makes us want to get one. Just to begin with, the SmartWatch looks rather nice. Not to mention, as you can see from the images below, it is available in a few color options. And looks aside, the watch is feature rich with the ability to show the date and time as well as text messages. In addition, some of the other goodies that the SmartWatch features include the ability to handle/control your calls and music as well as email, Twitter, Facebook and more. Also worth noting, the Xperia SmartWatch is both scratch-proof and splash-proof.

CES 2012: Hands on with the Sony Xperia ion smartphone

In addition to the Xperia S smartphone, we also saw Sony announce the Xperia ion. And similar to our hands on gallery with the Sony Xperia S, we also spent a few minutes with the ion. Though while nice, we have to say that it was not quite as fancy looking as the Xperia S. Of course, that is just our opinion so make sure you check the gallery below…

Verizon set to charge $249 for the DROID 4 according to MAP

The Motorola DROID 4 was recently announced at CES 2012, and while it confirmed the specs we already knew from numerous leaks, it did not announce pricing or launch information.  Fortunately, a recently leaked Minimum Advertised Pricing sheet shows the DROID 4 will launch for $249 on a two year contract.

We already heard the LG Spectrum will launch for $199 on a two year contract and it features the same if not better hardware, but the one enticing appeal of the DROID 4 is, of course, its slider QWERTY keyboard.

If you absolutely need a slider keyboard, then the DROID 4 is definitely a solid option with 4G LTE on Verizon Wireless, but there are also numerous better touch screen options.

CES 2012: Hands on with the Sony Xperia Smart Wireless Headset Pro

In addition to the Xperia line of smartphones, Sony also has some Xperia branded accessories. One of those is the Smart Wireless Headset Pro and we managed to get a few images while on the show floor. What can you really say here, this is an Xperia branded product and it is a headset. That aside though, the Xperia Smart Wireless Headset Pro allows the user to make calls from the headsets recent caller list and it displays text messages, email, caller names, media titles and more. The headset can also be used as a portable MP3 player or radio and according to the folks at Sony – features "superior" stereo sound.

CES 2012: Hands on with the Sony Xperia S smartphone

Sony announced the non-Ericsson branded Xperia S smartphone the other day and as we had promised – we managed to spend some time with the device on the show floor. Of course the handset was announced with some decent specs but it also feels really nice in hand. The Xperia S is a bigger phone, it is sporting a 4.3 inch display however given the thinness, it feels really good in hand. Or more specifically, it does not feel overly large in your hand. But feel aside we also have to comment on the look of this handset – it looks really really nice. Seriously, we probably say that quite often, however the Xperia S has a solid design which has taken some of the finer style points from that of some of the Bravia televisions. That all being said, continue on and check out the images below…

CES 2012: Hands on with the myCharge Folio iPhone battery case

We mentioned the PowerBag and we mentioned our hands on with the myCharge Duet iPhone battery case. And well, in addition we also checked out the Folio iPhone battery case from myCharge. This one was equally nice in quality. The myCharge Folio brings a matte case and magnetic closer. It also has a look very similar to that of the Smart Cover for the iPad. Of course, unlike the Apple Smart Cover the myCharge Folio brings a 1300 mAh battery along with a USB power-in cable. This case retails for $79.99 and as you will see in the images below — it is available in a variety of colors.

CES 2012: Hands on with the myCharge Duet iPhone battery case

The folks over at PowerBag sent over a nice backpack for us to use during the show. The bag came for free, however there was a catch in that we have to visit their booth to get the battery. And well, that visit came with a tour which not only showed the bags, but also the other goodies. Some of those goodies are battery style cases for the iPhone. More specifically, one of those cases was the myCharge Duet which brings features to include a;

  • 1300mAh rechargeable battery case with built-in USB power-in cable
  • 2-part design: ultra thin, protective iPhone case and custom fitting battery pack
  • Doubles iPhone 4S battery life
  • Includes 3 protective cases (black, white, blue)

The myCharge Duet is priced at $99.99 and while we only spent a few minutes with the case — we will say that it looks rather nice. With that, check out a few of the images we snapped below…

CES 2012: Microsoft booth tour, the final booth tour

As one has come to expect, Microsoft had a massive booth here at CES. Of course, while we have expected that based on previous years, that will be changing as of CES 2013. And by that we are referring to how Microsoft will no longer have a booth here. Anyway, that may still sound somewhat surprising however given the booth that they had on display here this year – we are not all that certain they really need one. Sure, Microsoft has been here at CES for a very long time, however everything that they were showing off has been out and available. Just take a look at the images in the gallery below, Microsoft was demonstrating everything from Office to SkyDrive to the Xbox 360 as well as showing off plenty and plenty of PC's and Windows Phone 7 smartphones. And while the booth may have been stale in terms of new products and/or services, we do have to say that it will be slightly strange to walk into CES in January 2013 and not see Microsoft. With that, enjoy the final Microsoft booth tour…

CES 2012: Hands on with the Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G smartphone for MetroPCS

MetroPCS released the Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G smartphone a few days back, and well, as one would expect given the recent release – it was on display here at CES. That being said, the handset is sporting some decent overall specs, though nothing overly exciting. They include 4G LTE connectivity, a 3.5 inch display, 1GHz processor, front and rear facing cameras and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Like we said, nothing overly exciting but that changes when you consider that the handset is priced at just $199 – a contract free $199. As for the phone and the feel, that would have to come back as a positive report. Bottom line, the handset not only looked good but felt good in hand. With that, check out the above image and the rest in the gallery below…
