Nokia Lumia 900 could be coming to the UK in June and more

Nokia Lumia 900 could be coming to the UK in June

Nokia Lumia 800Nokia announced the Lumia 900 at CES two weeks ago, saying the phone was designed specifically for North America, with no plans to bring it overseas announced. According to Carphone Warehouse Nokia does plan on bringing the phone to the United Kingdom, but not for a few more months.

Carphone Warehouse currently has a page for the Nokia Lumia 900 on its website, listing the device as “coming soon” on that page the retailer says that Nokia will be releasing the Lumia 900 in the UK sometime in June of this year, but plans are subject to change. You can pre-register to get more information on the Lumia 900′s European release from Carphone Warehouse, if/when that happens.

A flagship phone like the 4.3-inch Lumia 900 seems like a the sort of phone Nokia would want to release everywhere. Perhaps it’s just a matter that there’s an agreement where AT&T will get the device first. Currently it’s expected for the Lumia 900 to come to AT&T in march. Whenever Nokia ends up announcing the Lumia 900 for Europe, you can be sure that it will lack the American version’s LTE radio as Europe lacks the networks to take advantage of it.

Windows 8 beta will likely be the "Consumer Preview"

Windows 8When Microsoft made the big reveal of Windows 8 at MIX art year it released what it called a “Developer Preview” version of the new OS. It was essentially and alpha, an early build that wasn’t nearly ready for anyone but those who wanted a headstart on creating apps. The beta for Windows 8 could see a similar naming.

What we’d normally call the Windows 8 Beta will likely be called the Windows 8 Consumer Preview instead. There’s a few reasons why that change could happen. For one, Microsoft would want to signal that Windows 8 is, in fact, coming up very soon. A beta could take a long time to be released. It could also be because we see a ton of beta products now, many of which work just like full-blown products (look at examples like Gmail, Minecraft, and the Chrome beta builds). Microsoft doesn’t want people using the pre-release versions as their main OS, so calling it a “preview” could help signal that it isn’t quite ready yet.

The “Consumer Preview” of Windows 8 is still said to be scheduled for late February, which is promising. The few minutes I saw of it at CES on the Lenovo Yoga were pretty smooth, but that was pre-release software on pre-release hardware. Hopefully we’ll see more about the preview of Windows 8 in the next few weeks.

Google+ eases up on real name requirement

During its infancy, Google+ came under scrutiny due to Google’s requirement that all Google+ users use their natural name in their profiles. The problem with this is that some people are better known by their nicknames and stage names. After many months of waiting, Google is now ready to allow everyone to add an alternative name to their Google+ profile.

Google will begin implementing these changes over the next week or so. There will be an option in the “edit profile” section that will allow users to add a second identity. Google also reminded everyone that their nicknames will follow them across any service that uses their Google Profile.

Google will continue to flag nicknames that may not be appropriate. If that happens, the offender will have to prove to Google that their nickname accurately represents their true identity.

Visual effects of HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire' revealed

Remember watching sci-fi shows from the 90s and having to bear those cheesy special effects? Well, Brainstorm Digital — the team responsible for the VFX in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire – have certainly made the line between reality and special effects much finer.  The Emmy award-winning group has released a video breaking down the layers of effects that were used in the second season. What really blew my mind was how seamless the details looked on actor Jack Huston’s face. If I hadn’t known any better, I’d have assumed that Huston spent hours every day on set with make-up artists. The future of television effects sure looks promising.
