| | Section: Computers, Hardware There’s not a lot of people who have, or have use for an entire second monitor for their computers. However, there are some of us who wouldn’t mind having a second, much smaller monitor to put certain applications in. Mimo Monitors has realized this with their line of 7-inch secondary monitors, and today they release a new version, and knock down the prices of the rest of the line. The new model comes in the form of the iMo Pivot Touch. The Pivot Touch is a 7-inch touchscreen with the pivoting of the iMo Pivot. The functionality is essentially the same, with the added benefit of a touchscreen, and Mac OS X drivers finally included in the box (previous models require a download for the drivers). In addition to the new model, Mimo Monitors is dropping prices on all other models in celebration of Black Friday, with the sale lasting from now until November 30. The sale also includes a free “MIMO care package” which includes a carrying case, iProtector Screen Films, and a stylus for touchscreen models (iMo Pivot Touch, and the 720-S). Mimo’s 7-inch monitors do seem to have a certain appeal to them, and with the lower prices and the new iMo Pivot Touch, that appeal increases a bit. Having a secondary screen for an email app, Twitter app, video or whatever you want is a nice idea. However, the questions remains whether that idea is worth the $130 for the lowest models (710-S and Pivot) or $200 and $210 for the Pivot Touch and 720-S, respectively. For the same price you could get an LCD screen with a resolution much higher than 800x480, and much larger than 7-inches. Those monitors require a graphics card and their own power rather than being powered only by USB. However, larger doesn’t always mean more desirable for everyone. The study surveyed 1100 shoppers about their Black Friday shopping plans. While 40% said they were going to buy electronics on Black Friday, over half said they planned to do so online. Only 18% said they would be going to stores like Best Buy and Radio Shack. When asked how they did at the Black Friday sales last year, a whopping 72% said they got exactly what they wanted. 48% said they went on to buy other things in addition to those coveted items. According to the study, the hot electronic item this holiday season is the HDTV. 30% said they are looking to buy one this year, and with sizes beyond 60 inches and below 10, there is sure to be one for every budget. Coming in second are laptops. 22% of the shoppers surveyed said they plan to pick one up, and 14% plan to get a GPS system or Blu-ray player. MP3 players came in last with just 9% saying they plan to buy one. Looks like Smartphones and iPods have won out over them. Big spenders, not surprisingly, are in the minority this year. Only 22% said they planned to spend more than $1000 on electronics online and just 18% at stores. 25% plan to spend between $500 and $1000 in stores or online, 30% plan to spend between $200 and $500 online and 36% at stores, and 20% plan to spend less than $200 in both places. Phones such as the T-Mobile G1 and myTouch can all access the free turn-by-turn navigation Google announced with the Motorola Droid. Be jealous no more, or at least, less jealous. Also included in the release is layers for these phones. Now, users can overlay their maps with transit maps (oh so handy!) as well as info from my maps, Wikipedia and more. Sales of phones still running Android 1.6, like the HTC phones with the Sense UI, will be helped by this addition. Nice move Google. Users can download the latest version of Google Maps from the Android Market and begin navigating all over the US (the only place it will work) today. The service is in beta and is free. Note: some Android 2.0 functions will not work on Android 1.6. For example, the “navigate to” voice command will not work on the older Android release. This week, Amazon will offer discounts on video games, DVD’s, electronics, and much more in its Black Friday Deals Week. Several products have been placed on sale and can be browsed by category in the website's Black Friday Deals section. The price cuts aren’t earth-moving but they are a noticeable dip in certain situations. TV’s, Digital cameras, GPS devices, computer parts, and notebooks are available for as much as 50% off. Music junkies can also take advantage of a special section for MP3 album downloads that cost only $5. Amazon also offers lightning deals, which are Woot-like deals available only until supplies last or the pre-defined clock runs out. I’m glad to see more companies start their sales early this week. I’m not a fan of camping out local retailers to get products and it’s great to see online sellers offering an early option. I received the EB51’s and the EB71’s, which are described as the Premium Full Range Ear Buds and the Noise Isolation In Ear Monitors respectively. They were also kind enough to send over two pairs of each, which means that I have a brand new set of each to give away to a few lucky Gadgetell readers. But more on the giveaway in another post that will come later today, for now lets concentrate on the review. First, just to give a little history as to my earbud use. I will say that I spend more time than I should wearing earbud style headphones—on some days up to 3, 4 or even 5 hours. That said, I use them at my computer (an iMac and Eee PC netbook), with my iPhone, my HTC Hero and my Zune HD. In other words, I use them with a variety of sources, but nothing that is going to require exceptional sound quality. As far as content, I listen to a mix of Slacker, Pandora, audio and video podcasts as well as Zune Marketplace content and ripped CD’s. Again, nothing that screams audiophile. What is being reviewed? - Kicker EB51 Premium Full Range Ear Buds - $15.95 Available in blue, pink, black and yellow.
- Kicker EB71 Noise Isolation In Ear Monitors - $23.95 Available in blue, pink, black, gray and white.
My thoughts Basically, according to me, what makes for a good set of earbuds is a decent price and a comfortable fit. Unfortunately everyone is different in terms of fit, but I will say that both the EB51’s and EB71’s offered me a great fit. The EB51’s are standard earbuds, however the EB71’s ship with a variety of earpieces to provide a more “custom” fit. Overall, I would say that both models offered an acceptable sound quality, but like I mentioned I am not listening to high quality sources. Another nice perk which may be important for some is that both the EB51’s and EB71’s come in a variety of colors. As you can see from the images, I reviewed the yellow EB51’s and the grey EB71’s. Personally, another item that I consider when purchasing earbuds is price because while a good amount of my use time is indoors in front of a computer, I also spend a fair amount of time using them for running and general house/yard work. In other words, I want decent quality without breaking the bank. You know, just in case, or more accurately for when I ruin them. With that the Kicker EB51’s and EB71’s are in that not breaking the bank category at $15.95 and $23.95 respectively. Although they can be found for a little cheaper on Amazon. For me, the price is right and these both offered a comfortable fit—even with extended wear. Personally, I liked the EB51’s a little better just because they seemed slightly more comfortable. The Bottom Line I will continue to use, and recommend both the EB51’s and EB71’s that I received as review items. The info-keeping service has launched a beta version of its application for Android just in time for the holidays. TripIt has had an app on the iPhone for some time. TripIt allows users to simply forward confirmation emails from Travel agents, travel websites or even directly from the airline or hotel. TripIt converts these confirmations into travel plans and stores them for your trip. Users can quickly call up the info, pertinent weather data and on the latest iPhone version, see a map of the terminal so you can plan your sprint to make your connection. Having your info in one secure place is comforting but also very useful. TripIt provides links so you can get the very latest info on your flight, often well before the agents at the gate get it. The availability of the app on Android is a good sign. The service from TripIt is fantastic (I use it) and opening it up to more users is a very good sign. Oh, and the basic service is free. Well, almost to an end. The official availability is that the Channel Store will come as a free update and be rolled out to “all existing Roku customers over the course of the next two weeks.” That aside, the new channels include Blip.tv, Facebook Photos, Flickr, FrameChannel, Mediafly, MobileTribe, Motionbox, Pandora, Revision3 and TWiT, however there was also a promise of more to come in the future. Additionally, this update will come for all Roku users regardless of the model (Roku SD, Roku HD or Roku HD-XR) they are using. Of course, these new channels are joining the existing lineup which included Amazon video-on-demand, MLB.tv and of course Netflix. Unfortunately, as everyone seems to be pointing out, Hulu was not in this lineup of available channels, which honestly is not all that surprising to me. That said, I am happy to see Pandora, but the geek in me is happy to see Revision 3 and TWiT. Of course, Flickr should be good for a little fun also. Keep reading to check out the full press release: Roku Launches Open Platform for Delivery of Content to the TV; Announces First 10 New Channels Pandora, Facebook Photos, Revision3, Mediafly, TWiT, blip.tv, Flickr, FrameChannel, Motionbox and MobileTribe all now available on the Roku player Silicon Valley, Calif. – November 23, 2009 – Roku, Inc., maker of the popular and award-winning family of Roku players, announced today the Roku Channel Store and the first 10 free channels for Roku customers to enjoy on their TVs. From internet radio to video podcasts, professional web content to photo sharing and personal videos, the Roku Channel Store provides an open platform for delivering quality content to the TV. New channels now available for customers to add today to their Roku experience via the Roku Channel Store include: Pandora, Facebook Photos, Revision3, Mediafly, TWiT, blip.tv, Flickr, FrameChannel, Motionbox and MobileTribe. For the complete list of channels, specific channel descriptions and features please go to http://www.roku.com/roku-channel-store. These first 10 channels are just the beginning for Roku. Many other developers are working on Roku Channels now, and Roku expects additional developers to adopt the Roku platform over time. New channels will appear in the Roku Channel Store automatically as they become available. The Roku Channel Store represents an opportunity for content owners and publishers to reach an already large and growing audience of Roku customers. By creating an open platform for delivery to the television over the Internet, Roku has leveled the playing field for content owners. “The Roku Channel Store turns the Roku player into the world’s first open platform designed specifically for the TV,” Anthony Wood, founder and CEO of Roku, Inc said. “Now content producers and distributors – from single person shops to billion dollar corporations – can deliver their content directly to consumers without having to go exclusively through cable operators, satellite networks or TV affiliates.” To create a channel for the Roku Channel Store, a developer creates an application using Roku’s free software developer kit. This SDK is available free upon request by emailing partners@roku.com. All Roku players, including the Roku SD, Roku HD and Roku HD-XR models, are compatible with the Roku Channel Store. The new channels are in addition to the existing Roku channels already available: Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX), Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) Video On Demand and MLB.TV. Pricing and availability The Roku Channel Store will be delivered as an automatic and free upgrade to all existing Roku customers over the course of the next two weeks. New customers will automatically be upgraded when they first install their Roku player. To browse and use the Roku Channel Store, customers will be prompted to create a Roku account. Existing customers who do not want to wait for their Roku player to update automatically can manually update their Roku player immediately. Detailed instructions can be found under the Roku Channel Store tab at http://www.roku.com/support/faqs. First introduced in May 2008, and updated regularly with free software updates, the Roku player family provides the easiest, most affordable and reliable way for hundreds of thousands of Roku customers to watch their favorite movies, TV shows and sporting events instantly on their TV. All three Roku players are available immediately at http://www.roku.com starting at $79.99 and include free shipping for a limited time.
